Liturgy At Holy Trinity Lutheran Church October 15, am & 11am Lectionary 28a In Isaiah we are given a vision of the great feast to come, when God will wipe away death forever. In Jesus parable about a great banquet, those invited do not come, so the invitation is extended to others. In our liturgy God spreads a table before us. Even amid anxiety and hardship we rejoice in the peace of God that surpasses all understanding. With great joy we feast at the table of the Lord, and we go forth to share the wonderful invitation with others hungering and thirsting for the abundant life of God.

Prelude Schmücke dich, o liebe Seele J. S. Bach ( ) (Text may be found in Hymn 462) Gathering Hymn Greeting Help Us Create SACRED SPACE by powering down Please do not use cell phones and other electronic devices. #462 Now We Join in Celebration GATHERING The ringing of the meditation bowl calls us to silence, centering and reflection as we prepare for worship. At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand, as you are able, and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the c, ross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in processions adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Canticle of Praise [2]

Let us pray Amen. ~ be seated ~ Prayer of the Day [3]

WORD First Reading Isaiah 25:1-9 This stunning eschatological poem invokes the images of city, ruins, palace, shelter, cloud, mountain, feast, wine, shroud, tears. God is described as swallowing up death, consuming its danger so that we remain alive and safe. The poem is chosen as a parallel to Matthew s picture of the king providing a banquet for a surprising group of guests. For Christians, the tomb of Christ has swallowed death. Be sure that a masterful reader proclaims this amazing ancient poem. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Psalm 23 Setting: Mark Sedio The cantor/choir first sings the refrain and the assembly repeats. The cantor/choir and assembly sing alternate verses. Refrain: Tone: 1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not be in want. 2 The LORD makes me lie down in green pastures and leads me be- side still waters. 3 You restore my soul, O LORD, and guide me along right pathways for your name s sake. 4 Though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil; for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. Refrain 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil, and my cup is running over. 6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever. Refrain [4]

Paul once again provides a balance for Matthew: even though there is controversy within the Philippian community, Paul still praises it as his joy and his crown. The Lord is near : the church recognizes the risen Lord here, in word, sacrament, and assembly. Second Reading Philippians 4:1-9 Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Stand, as you are able, to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Verse: This is the LORD for whom we have waited; let us be glad and rejoice in God s salvation. (Isa. 25:9) Alleluia. Alleluia. Alleluia. Gospel Acclamation Setting: Carl F. Schalk Sung first by the cantor/choir and repeated by all as indicated. The verse is sung by the cantor/choir. God calls us to life together, described here as a wedding banquet for the prince. Christians have likened the love of Christ for the church as a marriage and holy communion as the banquet that God provides: recall the wedding imagery in the hymn Soul, adorn yourself with gladness. Some interpreters have likened the wedding robe to a white garment of baptism, and some Christians have literalized the eschatological metaphors and specify heaven as an everlasting joyous banquet and hell as perpetual weeping and gnashing of teeth. The holy gospel according to Matthew. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ. Alleluia (sung as above) ~ be seated ~ Following the sermon there is a time of silence for reflection and quiet meditation. Our liturgy is not only made up of words, gestures and music, but also moments of silence. Gospel Matthew 22:1-14 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence [5]

Hymn of the Day To The Wedding Feast God Calls Us Text: Delores Dufner, OSB (b. 1939) 2008 GIA Publications, Inc. Music [BEACH SPRING]: The Sacred Harp, Philadelphia (1844); arr. Selected Hymns (1985) 1985 Augsburg. Prayers of Intercession Peace The assembly is invited to share God s peace with one another saying, Peace be with you, or similar words. After each petition: Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you. ~ be seated ~ [6]

MEAL If this is your first time, or if you have been attending awhile and would like to get to know us better, please fill out the welcome slip in the pew and place it in the offering plate. Today s loose offering is designated for the Chicago CROP Walk (see page 12 for more information). Checks and envelope offerings support Holy Trinity s overall ministry unless designated otherwise. #466 In the Singing ~ please stand as you are able ~ Gathering of Gifts and Setting of Table Offertory Hymn Great Thanksgiving The thanksgiving includes the following: Dialogue \ It is indeed right, our duty and our joy, that we should at all times and in all places give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God, through our Savior Jesus Christ; who on this day overcame death and the grave, and by his glorious resurrection opened to us the way of everlasting life. And so, with all the choirs of angels, with the church on earth and the hosts of heaven, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: Preface [7]

Holy, Holy Celebrating our Reformation heritage, this musical setting has been sung by Lutherans since the 18th century. Eucharistic Prayer Memorial Acclamation Great Amen The Lord s Prayer As a sign of openness to the divine presence, you may join the presider in praying the Our Father with the ancient gesture of extended hands. [8]

Lamb of God Please remain standing. Celebrating our Reformation heritage, this musical setting has been sung by Lutherans since the 16th century. ~ please be seated ~ All are welcome at Christ's table, including children. Bread is received in the hands. Wine is received either by drinking from the (silver) common cup, or by saving the bread and dipping it in the second (glass) cup. Gluten-free wafers are available from the presiding minister. Those not communing may come forward for a blessing, keeping your hands folded over your chest. For those unable to consume either wine or bread, communion is received fully in either element alone. I will ever trust my savior, he is always true to me. He will help me when I need him, and to him I ll faithful be. I will trust him and obey him with a spirit glad and free. Jesus, thou hast oft commanded that I should believe in thee. O how often I ve offended, when thy help I could not see. Yet thy love then most abounded, and thou whispered, trust in me! I have found through fear and danger that thy arm is safe and strong Guiding me in midst of evil, guarding well against all wrong. Therefore I will ever trust thee, glad my whole life long. (Text: P. A. Sveeggen, 1948) [9] Communion 9am Communion Anthem In thee I trust Swedish Folk Tune, arr. Leland B. Sateren ( )

11am Communion Anthem The Lord is my shepherd Henry Smart ( ) Text is a paraphrase of Psalm 23 by W.S. 12 CROP HUNGER WALK TODAY! People in need are depending on us. In Puerto Rico, for instance, weeks after the hurricane, most people are still without water and power, and aid has been slow to arrive. CROP Walks have helped ship 22,500 hygiene kits and 500 tarps (with cord) to assist with recovery there. In South Sudan, Somalia, Yemen, and Nigeria, 20 million people are on the brink of famine, and 10 million of them are children at risk of starvation. Here in Chicago, 812,000 of our neighbors need help filling even a small paper lunch bag with food. 25% of our contributions will be granted to six local agencies: A Just Harvest, the Episcopal Hunger Committee, Facing forward to End Homelessness, Lakeview Pantry, Second Presbyterian and the South Loop Campus Ministry. Sign up to be a walker or make a donation at htchicago.org/crop or contact Pastor Sevig (msevig@htchicago.org) for more information.
