1 Liturgy at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church November 20, :30 a.m. Last Sunday of the Year Jeremiah s promise of the execution of justice and righteousness in the land finds ironic fulfillment in the execution of Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews. It appears so utterly contradictory that the king should be crucified with the criminal. This victory appears for all the world as ignominious defeat. Yet through the gate of death our Lord opens the door to paradise.

At the conclusion of the introduction to the hymn stand and face the rear of the nave. Turn to face the cross as it enters; you may bow as the cross passes, honoring the mystery of our salvation. INCENSE used in festive processions, adds the sense of smell in worship and shows the significance of our bodies and all of God s creation. The clouds of incense represent purification and the rising of our prayers. Used in many religions, incense has roots in both Judaism and Christianity. The presiding minister bows toward the assembly which is the body of Christ and the primary symbol of God s presence in the liturgy. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you. Prayer of the Day First Reading Jeremiah 23:1-6 Let us pray Amen ~ be seated ~ WORD Christians interpret this passage as a description of Jesus Christ, who reigns wisely and executes justice. The Hebrew of verse 6 refers to YHWH God, that is, the Lord, as the embodiment of righteousness, and Christians transfer to the Risen Christ the honorific Lord, who reigns as king from the cross. 4 Second Reading Colossians 1:11-20 The reading from Colossians is most appropriate to celebrate the sovereign Christ: all other thrones or rulers were created through his power and for him alone. As an ideal king would be imagined, Christ holds all things together, has first place in everything, embodies God, and makes peace on earth. God is the strength from which the people derive their strength. Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamation Setting: John Helgen Stand to welcome the gospel and turn to face the book as the gospel is read in the midst of the assembly. Gospel Luke 23:33-43 As the gospel is announced, you may trace a small cross on your forehead, lips and breast, a prayer that the Word may dwell in our minds, on our lips and in our hearts. Sermon Silence Hymn of the Day Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is the coming kingdom of our ancestor David. Alleluia. (Mark 11:9) This passage is particularly appropriate for the celebration of the reign of Christ. The Roman authorities claim that they have executed the purported king of the Jews, and the thief asks Jesus for entrance into his kingdom. Christ is king when he reigns from the cross, forgiving our sins. The holy gospel according to Luke. Glory to you, O Lord. The gospel of the Lord. 5 With the whole church, let us confess our faith. I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. In baptism, we are welcomed into the body of Christ and sent to share in the mission of God. We are called to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth. Welcoming New Members Apostles Creed Address & Questions Sisters and brothers in Christ, do you intend to continue in the covenant of your baptism among God's people in this place? Those being welcomed respond. I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. People of God, do you promise to support and pray for these new members in their life in Christ? We do, and we ask God to help and guide us. Let us welcome these sisters and brothers in Christ to this community of faith. We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Included on this program are Beethoven's Serenade, Op. 8 for Flute, Violin, and Viola, J.S. Bach's humorous "Coffee Cantata," and a sampling of works by Brahms. About the film: FRONTLINE follows renowned New Yorker writer and Boston surgeon Atul Gawande as he explores the relationships doctors have with patients who are nearing the end of life. In conjunction with Gawande s new book, Being Mortal, the film investigates the practice of caring for the dying, and shows how doctors himself included are often remarkably untrained, ill-suited and uncomfortable talking about chronic illness and death with their patients. 14 [14] Wherever you are in your spiritual life you are welcome you are invited to come and explore your spiritual questions with others at holy trinity. Life Together is a communal process of spiritual growth and renewal. Life Together is designed for those: + who did not grow up Christian and/or have not been baptized; + who are new to Lutheranism, liturgy, or a sacramental tradition; + who are estranged from the church but are now drawn to community and communal worship; + who are sensing a stirring of the Spirit, yet are filled with questions; + who may have grown up Lutheran but didn t think about it when they were confirmed, and would like to learn more about Christian faith and life in community; + who are parents wanting to grow in their faith as part of the baptismal promises they make on behalf of their children. Life Together is a place to bring questions, doubts, and hopes. Rather than giving answers (like a catechism), together we will seek wisdom for our lives from scripture, sacraments, liturgy and other Christian practices. We are making plans for LIFE TOGETHER sessions from January May There would be weekly sessions during Lent (March 5 April 2) with several additional sessions in January/February and several following Easter (April/May). We will schedule meeting times based on the schedules and preferences of the participants. One possible format is Sunday mornings 8:45 10:15 a.m. If enough people are interested, we may form several groups. To assist with our planning, it would be helpful for you to express initial interest in one of the below ways by November 30. We will provide additional information and answer questions. 1) Pr. 15 NEW MEMBERS Welcomed at HTLakeview Michael Krusinsky grew up in San Antonio, TX and has been a lifelong Lutheran. He went to the University of Texas at Austin (Hook 'em Horns!) to study philosophy, and then moved to Chicago for graduate school to obtain his Master of Social Work. He has a passion for helping others, and loves to travel, read philosophy, drink coffee, and speak German. Emily Yanos graduated from Purdue University in December 2015 and moved to Chicago after! She is a Graphic Designer at CBRE in River North. She loves to run, read, bake, travel...she likes being busy! Emily is excited to get involved and meet everyone! Sarah, Ramsey, Grady & Henry Donnell Ramsey, Sarah, Grady, and Henry Donnell live in Lakeview and are excited to join Holy Trinity. Ramsey (a Nashville native) is the Director, Library and Technology at The John Marshall Law School, and Sarah (from the Chicago suburbs) is an attorney at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. Grady is a 4th Grader at Blaine Elementary School, and Henry is 2.5 years old. Martin Modahl & Lauren Conway. Martin is a pastor s kid raised in ELCA congregations in Virginia, Florida, and River Forest. Lauren was raised Catholic in Albany, New York. Martin went off to study Computer Science at Georgia Tech in Atlanta, worked for a while in Germany, and eventually made it back to Chicago where his parents were living at the time. Lauren graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and has a J.D. from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Until September, she worked as a senior compliance officer for a hedge fund. When they started dating seriously, Martin expressed that he wanted to find a church they could attend together. They spent many weeks attending Lutheran and Catholic churches around the city until they found Holy Trinity just before Christmas Lila Fredenburg moved to Chicago from Princeton New Jersey in June 2016, after retiring as an academic library administrator. She held positions at Indiana University, Princeton University and Rutgers University. She lived in the far northern suburbs of Chicago from 1976 to 1998 and raised her children there. Her daughter, Camille Licklider, and son-in-law James and their children, Jonas and Colin, are members of Holy Trinity Lutheran Lakeview.
