FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora We received the sad news early this week about the passing of Archbishop George Niederauer, former Archbishop of San Francisco, on last Tuesday, May 2 nd at Nazareth House in San Rafael. Diagnosed with interstitial lung disease, he died at the age of 80. Archbishop Niederauer was the one who appointed me as pastor of Holy Name. I still remember coming to his office, my first and last time. I told him that entering his room was like being called to the principal s office. When he said I would like you to go to Holy Name to serve as administrator and pastor after your incardination to the Archdiocese, I loudly exclaimed: Lord, have mercy on me. He responded: God is always merciful! That is my special attachment with Archbishop Niederauer and my special connection with him is God s mercy. May the angels lead him into paradise and may the martyrs come to welcome him and take him to the holy city, the new and eternal Jerusalem. May he rest in peace! May is the word. May is the month. It is almost unbelievable how swiftly each month comes and goes. May is for the many M s! It is Mary s month! It is the month for Mothers! And in our parish, we celebrate the gift of Marriage, as three couples that I know are celebrating their 50 th wedding anniversaries. This Saturday, May 6 th, Alice and Edward Rosario receive God s blessing at the 5PM mass as they renew their marriage vows. Alice is our weekday sacristan and one of our Eucharistic ministers. This Sunday is Linda and Tony Sideco s turn, at the 11:30AM mass. You can t miss Linda and Tony at the church. They are almost everywhere, be it at the Eucharistic table or at the Party table. These two are just incredible and so visible in our parish. They are both Eucharistic Ministers, and our Lead Hospitality Ministers. You can count on them at parties, after Mass fellowship, receptions and other celebrations. They clean the church exterior every Saturday morning. They have received a "Couple of the Year" award from the city. Linda was also named as a Woman of the Year by the Archdiocese Council of Catholic Women. Then on May 20 th, Benny and Ofelia Capuyan will celebrate their 50 th Wedding anniversary, with a special mass presided by Fr. Angel Quitalig. Benny is the chair of our Parish Pastoral Council. He sings in our choir and serves as liaison for the Blessed Virgin Mary Shrine group. I am sure there are other couples celebrating their 50 th wedding anniversaries this year. These couples have a unique love story and marital journey. Hear their stories and seek their advice as they serve as an inspiration to all married couples and those planning to get married. Congratulations to all of you! At a parish celebration for couples reaching their 50 th year of married life together, Nick was asked to give a brief account of the benefits of being married so long. Tell us, Nick, just what is it you have learned from all those wonderful years with your wife? Nick responded, Well, I ve learned that marriage is the greatest teacher of all. It teaches you forbearance, meekness, self-restraint, loyalty, forgiveness, and a great many other qualities you wouldn t have needed if you d have stayed single. Someone said: Marriage is a very expensive way to get your laundry done for free. FAITH FORMATION * CATECHESIS * PASTORAL OUTREACH * Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC Crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415) 664-8590 World Day of Prayer for Vocations, This Sunday being Good Shepherd Sunday, we are enjoined by the Church to pray for vocations to the priesthood, consecrated life, lay ministry, to serve the People of God, full time. Being a Canossian Sister, I ask for your prayers for more vocations among our young women to consider joining us. We are women fascinated by the Greatest Love of Christ Crucified and Risen. We share life and prayer with one another, coming from different cultures and nationalities. We live the charism of Charity in Humility, following our foundress, St. Magdalene of Canossa (1774-1835, Verona Italy) She began our congregation on May 8, 1808, serving in the poor in San Zeno district in Verona. Together with the Lay Canossians, we give our creative response to the Gospel challenge, to make Jesus Christ known and loved. For young women who want to have a weekend of Come and See with us in our convent, please contact Sr. Cristina at 415-753-6699 or 415-664-8590. Listen, the Lord may be calling you to serve Him and His people full-time! Feast of St. Magdalen of Canossa This Monday, May 8 th, is an important event in the Canossian world. It is the liturgical feast of our Foundress and the commemoration of the date of the birth of our religious congregation. Please join us at the 9:00AM Mass in the Pastoral Center chapel. Following will be a reception hosted by the Lay Canossians. Happy Feast Day to the Canossian Family! St. Magdalene of Canossa, pray for us. Queen of Heaven An Evening with our Blessed Mother Come and join us for an exciting new parish adult faith formation program! We will begin this Thursday, May 11, at 7:00-8:30PM in the Flanagan Center. This six-part study and faith sharing sessions will go on every Thursday night until June 15 th. No homework assignments! Please contact Sr. Cristina for more information. Please come and bring a friend or family member. Draw closer to our Blessed Mother as she leads us closer to her Son. Holy Name Youth Ministry Thanks for all who organized and came to the cook-out last Saturday. It was an afternoon of fun and good food! The next gathering will be this coming Saturday, May 13 th. We will begin with the 5:00PM Sunday Vigil Mass in the church. After which we will gather in the Pastoral Center, to make 100-150 sandwiches to be distributed by St. Vincent De Paul Society. One of our YM team members, Julie Quock will buy the needed materials. Participants will also decorate earthen vases for Mother s Day. This activity will be coordinated by Alejandra Brito and Vince Nguyen. Please come to this afternoon of fun and outreach service to the poor. See you on May 13 th! Thank You to Roonie Flaherty for organizing our parish s homage to our Blessed Mother, and to celebrate the 100 th Anniversary of the apparition of Our Lady of Fatima. Thanks also to the catechists and students of Religious Education for leading the Rosary and making the celebration more festive. Our Lay of Fatima, Queen of Peace, pray for us. 2000 Hail Mary s for vatious needs of the Church. Everyone is invited to the Holy Name Marian Shrine on Saturday, May 13 th, beginning at 8:00AM. Each of the 20 petitions will be accompanied by 100 recitations of the Hail Mary. This devotion will end before the 5:00PM Mass. We thank Ester Aure, Marisa Reyes and the Shrine group for leading it. It is held every second Saturday of the month, 8:00AM 5:00PM. Intercessory prayers or petitions are important to keep the needs of the world alive in our hearts.
