WELCOME TO TO HOLY HOLY NAME NAME OF JESUS OF PARISH JESUS PARISH, SAN SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 ImFAZsible Mission! by Fr. Arnold Zamora Congratulations to our new Altar Servers who were installed at our 9:30 AM Mass last week. The Altar Servers are a very important part of the Church and every Parish is enriched through their dedication and service. It is a very important responsibility, and requires a sincere commitment. Many priests like me started our vocation as Altar Servers before entering the Seminary. It is a great privilege to serve the Altar of God. Priests, Lectors and Eucharistic Ministers can be called Altar Servers too. But in reality, all of us do not serve the Altar of God but the God of the Altar. Congratulations also to all those who have participated in the 4th Annual Fall Recital of our Conservatory of Music held at the Orradre Chapel at St. Ignatius College Prep last Sunday. All the young aspiring musicians performed well. You would be amazed with their talents. Who among us could ever forget the terror of the first time when we had to perform anything -- a poem, a play, a song -- in front of something more intimidating than a mirror. It takes a lot of courage to perform in front of people. A friend told me she sang with Celine Dion. I said, Wow! I asked, Where? She said, In a concert. My friend was not a good singer and not a performer at all, so I questioned: Really? To which she clarified: Yes, Celine Dion was on the stage and I was just among the audience, sitting far away at the back of the hall singing along with her. We might be far away from our loved ones this season but we are still singing the same Christmas songs that make us one with them. I might be at the altar and you are in the last pew of the church, but we are one to serve and praise the God of the Altar. If we are one, a lot of things can be done. Any mission will be possible to achieve if we work as one. And right now, towards the end of the year we face the seemingly impossible mission of reaching our assessment for the Archbishop s Annual Appeal. Although we are $7,480.00 short of our goal, we have three weeks to achieve it. It s time to be one again as we check our Christmas list if we have this item included. Please include it in your list. If you feel like giving more, consider it as a real joy, for the more you give, the more you receive. That is my firm belief. In God and when we are one with God, everything can be achieved. December 13, 2009 Dear Padre What are O Antiphons? I have a friend who says that singing the O Antiphons is her favorite part of Advent. I was too embarrassed to tell her I didn t know what she was talking about. Can you help? Janel Dear Janel, Most Roman Catholics have heard and sung the O Antiphons for years even if they don t know it. An antiphon is a brief refrain, usually from the Bible, either sung or said during worship. An O antiphon is an antiphon that starts with O, as in O Come, O Come Emmanuel each verse of that song is made up of an O Antiphon. The antiphons are most at home in the Liturgy of the Hours, the collection of psalms, hymns, prayers, and readings that make up the regular rhythm of the Church s prayer at morning, midday, evening, and night. The O Antiphons your friend refers to are verses used during the Church s evening prayer from December 17 23. With one verse spoken or sung before Mary s Magnifi cat each evening, these antiphons call on the Lord to come to his people using titles taken from the book of the prophet Isaiah. When the O Antiphons are sung in Latin, they present a sort of acrostic with a hidden message. The first letter of each title in the antiphon spells sarcore, which is ero cras spelled backward. In Latin, ero cras means tomorrow I come or tomorrow I shall be. In their original language and context, the O Antiphons have a particularly rich signifi cance, but they remain beautiful even when sung simply in English as the verses of O Come, O Come Emmanuel.
