NOTICES Improvements Several improvements have been carried out at St John's over the January quiet period. A group of churchwardens and vestry members filled two 6m skips with surplus goods from the under stage storage area in the Hall, creating ample room for children's ministry (Messy Church) and other materials to be stored in this space. The old Curate's office was cleaned out in preparation for Kumon moving into this space. The parish will once again have use of the Whitney Room as a meeting and interview room, from the end of January. The storage area at the front of the Hall has been dramatically improved, with new racks for the folding chairs installed, greatly improving the utility of the space. The Vestry and Library in the Church were also given a thorough clean out, and the team then moved on to cleaning and polishing the pews. The brassware inside the church and church plate had been polished previously by Keith and Claire Beecher. Thanks and appreciation to all involved. Lighting a Candle It is better to light a candle than to curse in darkness. Prayer is, at its most basic, a participation in the Holy Spirit s work of re-uniting all things to the Father through His Child Jesus. Sometimes that participation takes the form of movement or action or even a sigh. Lighting a candle can be both a sign of our participation in prayer and even the prayer itself especially when we ve run out of words. It becomes a sign of the Light which is Jesus shining in us for someone or something. And as we light that candle and place it in the sand we are signifying a handing over to God before whom and with whom we wait, listening, feeling, watching. In the mystery of Christ s love for us and His desire to have us with him, we have participated in re-uniting someone or something with the Father. Light has shone in the darkness. So light your candle, sigh your prayer, let go your joy or concern to God. And rest, be still, content to let His light lighten you and those you have brought before the Father.
