FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Welcome to the new season of Lent! We started the month of March with Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent, a period of 40 days that ends on Holy Thursday. It s time to do our spiritual exercises of fasting, prayer and almsgiving. When we think of Lent, we always think of giving up something. But it is more than just giving up. It is also giving developing a greater love towards God, self and others. It is a time to fast and feast. Fast from worry; feast on trusting God. Fast from complaining; feast on appreciation. Fast from negatives; feast on affirmatives. Fast from hostility; feast on tenderness. Fast from unrelenting pressures; feast from unceasing prayer. Fast from judging others; feast on Christ dwelling in them. Fast from fear of illness; feast on the healing power of God. Fast from words that pollute; feast on speech that purifies. Fast from discontent; feast on gratitude. Fast from anger; feast on patience. Fast from personal anxiety; feast on the fullness of truth. Fast from pessimism; feast on optimism. Fast from bitterness; feast on forgiveness. Fast from self-concern; feast on compassion for others. Fast from discouragement; feast on hope. Fast from suspicion; feast on truth. Fast from lethargy and apathy; feast on enthusiasm. Fast from facts that depress; feast on truths that uplift. Fast from gossip; feast on purposeful silence. Fast from problems that overwhelm; feast on prayer that sustains. Fast from thoughts that weaken; feast on promises that inspire. Fast from apparent darkness; feast on the reality of light. (Source: adapted and revised from The Anglican Digest) We fast Ash Wednesday. We abstained from eating meat last Friday. Now, we feast on this weekend as we celebrate our St. Patrick s Dinner. More than the corned beef and cabbage that we so enjoy, is the camaraderie we cherish. St. Patrick, who promoted the Holy Trinity and its unity of three persons in one God, desired for unity amidst diversity among Christians. Last Friday, the first Friday of Lent, a faithful parishioner stumbled through pouring rain past hamburger huts and steak houses into the monastery at Mount Angel and requested shelter. He was just in time for dinner and was treated to the best fish and chips he's ever had. After dinner, he went into the kitchen to thank the chefs. He was met by two brothers, "Hello, I'm Brother Michael, and this is Brother Francis." "I'm very pleased to meet you. I just wanted to thank you for a wonderful dinner. The fish and chips were the best I've ever tasted. Out of curiosity, who cooked what?" Brother Michael replies, "Well, I'm the fish friar." The man turns to the other brother and says, "Then you must be..." "Yes, I'm afraid I'm the chip monk." FAITH FORMATION * CATECHESIS * PASTORAL OUTREACH * Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC Crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415) 664-8590 Lenten Prayer God of all people. You walk with us on our life s journey. You know our joys and struggles. You know us better than we know ourselves. This Lenten season, may we too learn to walk with others. Through prayer, fasting and almsgiving, may we encounter you in our neighbors in need and live your call to serve our human family. Amen. Encounter Lent: Theme of CRS Rice Bowl Campaign 2017 For more than 40 years CRS Rice Bowl has been Catholic Relief Services Lenten faith-in-action program for families and faith communities. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we hear stories from our brothers and sisters around the world, reflect on our own lives and faith, and devote our Lenten prayers, fasting and almsgiving to transform the lives of those most in need. Lent begins this Wednesday, March 1 st with Ash Wednesday. CRS Rice Bowl offering boxes will be distributed in church after each Mass. They will also be available at all parish gatherings and meetings. Each Rice Bowl box has a 2017 Lenten Calendar that you can put in a prominent place in your home or work place. Be active, alive, enthusiastic during this 40 day Lenten Journey, with Prayer, Fasting, Giving. A Blessed Lenten Season to one and all! Weekly Youth Group will soon continue at Holy Name Fr.
