FROM THE PASTOR S DESK Dear Parishioners, At the beginning of Lent, I visited the classrooms of our school and talked about the Lenten Season. Many of the children shared with me what they would be doing for Lent giving up candy, spending less time playing video games, saying extra prayers, etc. We talked about how these practices can help us to focus more on God. Lent is a good time to break from the routine and to do things that will help you to focus on God as the center of your life. What are you doing for Lent? There are so many practices that can help you to re-center your life on what matters most. Maybe you could take a little time to open your Bible and allow God s Word to speak to you. You might want to sit down and read the Gospel of Mark, which is the one we will be hearing proclaimed at Sunday Mass throughout the year. Devotional prayer like the Stations of the Cross could help you to meditate more profoundly on the passion and death of Christ. When was the last time you participated in the Sacrament of Reconciliation? Why not consider coming to one of the opportunities for confession offered during the Lenten Season? Lent is also a wonderful time to make an extra effort to visit to a relative, friend, or acquaintance in a nursing home or care facility. You could really bring a lot of warmth and comfort to those in need just by spending a half hour or so with them. The Lenten season is time of renewal, a time to prepare ourselves for the mysteries of the death and resurrection of Christ. Our Lenten practices can help us to renew our lives and bring us closer to our God, who offers us mercy, strength and life. God s Blessings, Fr. Padre Jim Schuerman H IGH SCHOOL YOUTH MINISTRY Join 2,200 youth this summer, July 10-12, 2015, for the Steubenville Youth Conference! PARISH LIBRARY NEWS The Cross and the Beatitudes This classic work from the pen of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen brings together Christ's Sermon on the Mount with his Seven Last Words. The Fulfillment of All Desire Drawing upon the teaching of seven Spiritual Doctors of the Church, Ralph Martin presents an in-depth study of the journey to God. CONSULTATION FOR THE 2015 EXTRAORDINARY SYNOD OF BISHOPS In October 2014, the Extraordinary Synod was called by Pope Francis to focus on marriage and the family. The Extraordinary Synod drew on responses from a global consultation, as well as from testimonies from married couples from around the world, on the joys and challenges of family life in our times. In the spirit of dialogue, Pope Francis wishes to receive further feedback from Catholics on the outcome of the Extraordinary Synod, to help the Church prepare for the Ordinary Synod on the Family that is scheduled for Oct. 2-25, 2015. This Ordinary Synod will consider the vocation and mission of the family in the Church and contemporary world and will produce specific guidance on the pastoral care of families in our times. Archbishop Listecki invites you to participate in a consultation process in preparation of his report to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops by participating in a survey to share your views on modern-day family life. You are encouraged to read the preparatory document for the context of the questions, which you may access at the archdiocesan website (www.archmil.org). The Archbishop asks that you prayerfully consider the prepared questions, and if you are interested in participating, complete the online-consultation on the Archdiocesan website at www.archmil.org. A short response time has been given to us. In order for the Archdiocese to gather the information and forward it to the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, please respond by Sunday, March 1, 2015.
