Transcription:

St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE DESK of MSGR. MARTIN DECEMBER 10, 2017 The Pilot and the Priest A priest dies and is waiting in line at the Pearly Gates. Ahead of him is a guy who is dressed in sunglasses, a loud shirt, leather jacket and jeans. Saint Peter addressed this cool guy, who are you, so that I may know whether or not to admit you to the Kingdom of Heaven? The guy replies, I m Jack, a retired airline pilot from Houston. Saint Peter consults his list. He smiles and says to the pilot, take this silken robe and golden staff and enter the Kingdom. The Pilot goes into Heaven with his robe and staff. Next it is the priest s turn. He stands erect and booms out, I am Father Bob, pastor of St. Mary s for the last 43 years. Saint Peter consults his list. He says to the priest, take this cotton robe and wooden staff and enter the Kingdom. Just a minute, says the good father. That man was a pilot and he gets a silken robe and golden staff and I only get cotton and wood. How can this be? Saint Peter replies, up here we go by results, when you preached, people slept, when he flew, people prayed!!!!!! Readings for THE Second Sunday of Advent First Reading: Isaiah 40:1-5, 9-11 - Isaiah emphasizes that all people must prepare for the glory of the Lord to be revealed. Second Reading: 2 Peter 3:8-14 - For those who are impatient for the Second Coming, Peter explains that they should be grateful for the extra time to prepare, and concentrate on striving to become all that God would want them to be. Gospel: Mark 1:1-8 - John the Baptist stressed the importance of the coming of the Messiah. He acknowledged that he was only the messenger. John urged them to prepare for one far holier than he, who would walk among them. Readings for Next week - THE Third Sunday of Advent First Reading: Isaiah 61:1-2a, 10-11 - Isaiah describes the joy and salvation which will accompany the coming of Christ. He compares the plants which spring from a garden to the justice that will spring from all nations. Second Reading: 1 Thessalonians 5:16-24 - Paul reminds the Thessalonians to constantly ready themselves for Christ s arrival. He tells them to avoid any semblance of evil so that they may be found irreproachable when Jesus does arrive. Gospel: John 1:6-8, 19-28 - John explains that he is only a messenger to the people for one more powerful than himself. John stresses that they must make a path for the one so powerful that he is not fit to unfasten the strap of his sandal.
