1 St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. SZYMON KURPIOS SEPTEMBER 17, 2017 Today, we can see in the Gospel, how Peter asks Jesus about a very concrete theme that is still to be found in the heart of many persons. He asks the question about the limit of forgiveness. The reply is that this limit simply does not exist, Not seven times, but seventy-seven times. (Mt 18:22). To explain this, Jesus uses a parable. The king's question centers the theme of the parable, Weren't you bound to have pity on your companion as I had pity on you? (Mt 18:33). Forgiveness is a gift, a grace flowing out of God's love and mercy. Jesus' forgiveness has no limits, provided repentance is true and sincere, but it requires opening our heart to conversion, that is, do with others as God requests us to. Grave sin is excluded from the Kingdom. In converting to Christ through the Sacrament of Penance and faith, the sinner passes from death to life, and the penitent's act crowning this conversion is his atonement. Our own deeds showing our expiation are the sign of our personal commitment - that the Christian has assumed before God - to begin a new existence, while repairing, wherever possible, whatever damage made to our neighbors. As St. Thomas Aquinas explains, Man becomes God's debtor in two ways; first, by reason of favors received, secondly, by reason of sin committed: and just as thanksgiving or worship or the like regard the debt for favors received, so satisfaction regards the debt for sin committed. The man of the parable was not willing to behave according to the favor received, so he was no longer deserving forgiveness. READINGS FOR THIS SUNDAY First Reading: Sirach 27:30 28:7 - Sirach advises all to forgive the faults of their neighbor. Only by forgiving the sins of others, can a person expect to be forgiven his sins. Second Reading: Romans 14:7-9 - Paul stresses that no one is his own master; we are responsible to the Lord, and we belong to him in both life and death. Gospel: Matthew 18: When Peter asks how often he should forgive someone who wrongs him, Jesus answers, not seven times: I say seventy times seven times. Following Mass, we pray the Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, which affords us an opportunity to pray for our particular intentions and intercessions. All are invited. RESPECT LIFE GROUP The Church is called to proclaim the gift of life, to serve life and to promote the culture of life. Life in abundance must be the heart of the new evangelization. Join the Respect Life Group every first Monday for Mass at 7:30pm in the Chapel of Life. The meeting is in the Carriage House after the Mass and Novena. The price of a niche is $2,500, which allows you to inter the cremains of two people. We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. If you have questions or have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. The niches are usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones. ST. JAMES C.Y.O. If you have entered 4th Grade and have received your First Holy Communion, you are eligible to become an Altar Server. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. The 2017 theme will be "Living as Missionary Disciples." Catechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that each person plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness to the Gospel. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith. The Office of Religious Education wants to thank all who are volunteering their time this year, as well as in the past, to serve the youth of our parish in the ministry of Catechesis. Our program currently has over 62 Grades and 27 Catechists and over 35 facilitators for our 8th grade Confirmation program. Many of our Catechists are parents and we want to thank them for being an important example in their child s faith.
