1 St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. From the Desk of Fr. Adolphus April 30, 2017 STAY WITH US LORD JESUS Today's gospel reading begins with two disciples on the road leaving Jerusalem. They are on their way to a place called Emmaus, about 7 miles (11 km) from Jerusalem. They were on the road they are pilgrims on the road of life. Jesus is the Way, the Road. The problem is that at this moment they are going in the wrong direction. While they re walking, and talking, Jesus comes and walks with them. Luke says, "their eyes were kept from recognizing him." Not that "they failed to recognize him," but "their eyes were kept from recognizing him." In other words, it wasn t their fault, it wasn t some problem with their eyes or a lack of faith. No one s blaming them. Maybe grief or disappointment got in their eyes. After all, their hopes in Jesus have been dashed, their expectations left unmet. They d been so excited about Jesus, put so much faith in him, that when he died there didn t seem to be anything to do but leave, put it all behind them. Oh sure, there were some people who said Jesus was alive again, but who could believe talk like that? They hadn t seen him yet. So, on they walked, telling this stranger about their problems with Jesus, never suspecting the stranger was Jesus. The journey to Emmaus is for the disappointed, for those whose expectations have gone unmet. Surely everybody has walked that road some time. It s the road you walk when you don t make the team, when your candidate loses, your sweetheart won t talk to you, your loved one has died. Remember, it says "their eyes were kept from recognizing" Jesus. It wasn t that they weren t looking. They didn t recognize him until he blessed and broke the bread. Revelation comes from God, not from us. Most importantly they begged Jesus to stay with them and, guess what? He did just that. Jesus became known to them in the breaking of the bread and he will surely be made known to us in the same manner. Often in our spiritual discouragement we abandon the old for something new, or for nothing at all. Jesus has not left the Communion Table. He is always with us in the breaking of the bread, in the Holy Eucharist. For that reason, we say: STAY WITH US LORD! Readings for this week, the Third Sunday of Easter First Reading: Acts 2:14, After the Holy Spirit descends upon the apostles, Peter preaches to both Jews and Christians. Second Reading: 1 Peter 1:17-21 Peter makes reference to the Passover when the Jews escaped from Egypt. Gospel: Luke 24:13-35 Jesus reveals Himself to two disciples on the way to Emmaus. They recognized Jesus after He took bread, broke it, and distributed it to them. Readings for next Sunday First Reading: Acts 2:14a, Second Reading: 1 Peter 2:20b-25 - Gospel: John 10:1-10

If you have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. They are usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death, and are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard or landscaped terrace. We pray that the Lord who has blessed this project, become a final resting place for many of our loved ones. ST. JAMES PARENTING GROUP Our spring session has begun!!
