1 St. James the Apostle and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a Roman Catholic Parish with the Eucharist as the center of its life. Our mission, as disciples of Jesus Christ, is to build up the Kingdom of God by leading, nourishing and serving the community in Word and Sacrament. FROM THE PASTORS DESK - CHURCH ETIQUETTE August 27, 2017 I would like to speak a little about how we behave in church. While being a building with four walls and a roof, a church is not like other buildings. It is a special place. A place in which we gather as a community to come face to face with our Lord. Within these four walls the Golden Rule, to Do unto others as we would do unto ourselves and to Love One Another, must be a reality. Courtesy and understanding must be our way of life always, but especially within the walls of our church where we gather to celebrate our life in Christ. Therefore, I would ask that we keep the following points in mind when we come to pray. Individuals arrive at Mass early not just to get a good seat but to pray. Lengthy conversations with friends and neighbors intrudes on that prayer (anything after hello is lengthy). We have hallways and area in which conversations may be carried out without disturbing the prayer of others. Gathering as a community is an important part of church but we need to be mindful of the spiritual needs of each other and to respect others desire for quiet prayer and meditation before the communal celebration of the Eucharist. Cell phone conversations and such really Do Not have a place at mass. Children are an important part of every church and community and they should be welcomed at every church function with warmth and understanding. The voices of children are a sign of hope within any church community. It is the promise of the future of our church and our family and our community. However, those of us with children have got to be considerate of those around us. The truth of our reality is that we do not have a cry room here at St. James, an oversight of our builders, but a reality none the less. Therefore, every effort should be made by a parent to teach a child, however young, the need to be quiet during this special time. Bringing a child to the vestibule can be a solution to this fact or, at least, an attempt at a solution. Having said that, we should also keep in mind that small children have a shorter attention span than we adults. Children should be made welcome and not made to feel like a burden. A little courtesy and understanding on all our parts could go a long way. I apologize for the rambling nature of this message but I believe that it is something that needed to be said. Never use the priest as an excuse for trying to quiet a child, be quiet or father will become angry. Personally, it has to be a very loud child to bother me. Adults or teenagers talking during mass, or people talking during communion time, conversations on cell phones, those things bother me, but children who are simply acting their age do not. At the bottom line, if we all kept in mind the need for courtesy among ourselves, we d be a better place. God Bless. Second Reading: Romans 11: Paul writes praise-filled words about God s plan for his people. Gospel: Matthew 16: When Jesus asks his disciples, Who do you say that I am? Peter exclaims, You are the Messiah! Christ then declares that Peter is the Rock upon which he will build his Church. READINGS FOR NEXT WEEK First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9 Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2 Gospel: Matthew 16: Jesus tries to make his disciples realize that by following him, they will endure suffering, degradation, and death. He tells them that they must deny themselves and take up the cross in order to be his disciples.

Following Mass, we pray the Novena to Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal, which affords us an opportunity to pray for our particular intentions and intercessions. All are invited. RESPECT LIFE GROUP The Church is called to proclaim the gift of life, to serve life and to promote the culture of life. Life in abundance must be the heart of the new evangelization. Join the Respect Life Group every first Monday for Mass at 7:30pm. The meeting is in the Carriage House after the Mass and Novena. St. James Custodial Job Opportunity We are looking to hire a night custodian. This is a 20-hour/part-time flexible position. A clean driver s license is a must. SEPARATED AND DIVORCED MINISTRY The Separated and Divorced Ministry of St. James and Our Lady of the Lake/Mount Carmel is a support group for those who have experienced loss or rejection through separation or divorce. Our meetings are open to all men and women of the community. Meetings are in the Carriage House on the 1ST and 3RD Fridays of each month from 7:30PM to 9:00PM. (Please note that this Mass will replace our Novena Mass at 7:30pm. However, we will recite the Novena Prayer after the Mass of Remembrance). All are invited to the 8:00pm Annual September 11th Candle Light Vigil at the Putnam Heroes Memorial, located at Corner Stone Park, Fair Street in Carmel. This year there will also be a dedication of a new Monument honoring those Putnam residence who have died from 9/11 illnesses. Currently six additional names will be added to the monument. Save the Date for our Parish Picnic Saturday, September 23rd Putnam Memorial Park from 11:30am to 3:30pm We are looking for families to help organize the picnic. If you are able to help please notify the Parish Office, x 102. The price of a niche is $2,500, which allows you to inter the cremains of two people. We have celebrated Mass at the Altar of our Terrace and Columbarium many times. If you have questions or have been thinking of purchasing a niche, call Donna McCarthy at Ext. 105, on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday to schedule an appointment. For those of you not familiar with a Columbarium, it is a Latin word, which describes a collection of niches to house urns containing, cremated human remains. The niches are usually inscribed with the person s name and dates of birth and death. They are constructed to serve as permanent resting places for our loved ones in a churchyard and landscaped terrace. We pray that this holy ground becomes a final resting place for many of our loved ones. ST. JAMES C.Y.O. 6 RCIA Program Begins SEPTEMBER 12TH RCIT Program Begins SEPTEMBER 15TH RCIA - Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults RCIT - Rite of Christian Initiation for Teens under age 18 These programs of instruction and formation in the Catholic Faith are for the following individuals: - Adults who are at least 18 years of age and have never received the sacrament of Baptism. - Those who were baptized in the Catholic Church but never completed their Sacraments of Initiation, Holy Eucharist and Confirmation. - Those who wish to become Catholic but are currently members of another Christian community, or are not members of any Church. In addition to instruction in the Catholic faith, participants are encouraged to grow spiritually through prayer, participation in the Sunday worship of the Church, and rites that will prepare the individual for full initiation. Both Programs begin in mid-september and run through mid-april. Those completing the program will be received into full communion with the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Mass. RCIA classes meet every Tuesday evening at 7:30. RCIT meets every Thursday evening from 7PM - 8PM. Application Forms are available in the Parish Office or on the Parish Website (stjamesapostle.org). Come Adore the Lord with Us Adoration and Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament will be on First Friday, September 1st from 5PM until 10. Exposition is 5:00 PM and Benediction will take place at 9:45 PM. Please sign up for a period of time to Adore the Lord by putting a check-mark next to the half hour time in the book that is posted outside the Chapel of Life. We need to be assured that our Lord will never be alone during this special time. Could you not stay awake with me one hour? were the words of Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane he asks us the same question.

7 Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible Begins Monday, September 25th at 7:30pm in Doherty Hall This eight-week study provides the easiest way to understand the Bible. Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible makes the complex simple. It helps you uncover the story woven throughout Scripture so that you can get the big picture of the Bible and understand what it is all about. The Bible is a story about the Father s unfailing love for you - a love that you are now called to share with others. If you would like to have a deeper relationship with God and a better understanding of your faith, then join us for Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible. You will not only benefit personally from being part of this study; you will also help to bring about a profound renewal in our parish, as we grow closer to Christ.
