FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora After the WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges) Accreditation for our school last week, it s time for the Finance Review for our parish, both church and school. Some representatives from Burr Pilger Mayer, Inc., an accounting firm, will be reviewing our financials from Monday to Wednesday. On Thursday the bishops and priests and deacons of our Archdiocese will congregate at St. Mary s Cathedral for an afternoon of Lenten Reflection. We will also renew our priestly vows during the Chrism Mass at 5:30PM. We encourage our parishioners to support their priests by attending this mass where we bless the oils for the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Anointing of the Sick. Part of this Chrism mass is the renewal of priestly vows, the commitment the priests made during their ordination which is to serve God, his Church and his people. We also renew our obedience to the Archbishop and our superiors. Two auxiliary bishops from our Archdiocese of San Francisco will soon face a presbyterate of their own, being appointed to head a diocese. Bishop Robert McElroy, our auxiliary bishop, has been appointed as the bishop of San Diego and his installation to his new diocese will be on April 15th. Bishop Tom Daly, the auxiliary of San Jose, who used to be one of our priests in our Archdiocese and was also once our Vocations Director, has been appointed bishop of Spokane, Washington. We congratulate both of them and offer them our fervent prayers as they take on a new heightened level of ministry. Now both the Archdiocese of San Francisco and Diocese of San Jose will be in need of auxiliary bishops and using the famous line of Bishop Wang, and it s not gonna be me. Bishops are responsible for a priest s assignment and priests also go to them for advice. This reminds me of a story of a new associate pastor, nervous about hearing confessions, asks a bishop to listen in. Several penitents later, his mentor offers a few suggestions. Cross your arms over your chest and rub your chin with one hand, he says. Try saying things like, I see, yes, go on. I understand. How do you feel about that? The new priest tries out the words and gestures. The bishop says, Good, now, don t you think that s a little better than slapping your knee and saying. No way! You did what? Well, as we get closer to Holy Week starting with Palm Sunday next week, don t you think we need to avail ourselves of the Sacrament of Confession? St. Augustine says, The confession of evil works is the first beginning of good works. Don t be scared, our priests will never say, No way! You did what? PARISH BUILDING & MAINTENANCE COLLECTION Today s Second Collection is for our Parish Building and Maintenance Fund. Thank you for your generous support. ST.VINCENT DE PAUL COLLECTION Next Sunday, the Second collection is for St. Vincent de Paul Conference. Help Us Help Others. STATIONS OF THE CROSS & SOUP SUPPERS Fridays in Lent: March 27 Please join us for the Stations of the Cross at 6:00 PM in the Church followed by Simple Soup Supper in Flanagan Center at 6:30 PM. Soup Sponsor for March 27: Religious Education (Confirmation) & Youth MInistry

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Next Sunday will be the first 5 TH Sunday in 2015. Many parishes set aside these 5 th Sunday collections for the parish SVDP Conference. We at Holy Name of Jesus Parish have observed this tradition for a number of years. Thanks to your generosity we have been able to provide assistance to many families and individuals over the years. We count on your support again next Sunday. Please use your SVDP envelope in the second collection next Sunday. Thank you to the parents who represented the adult population of our school at a meeting last Tuesday evening. I appreciated the time you took to speak on behalf of Holy Name School. A huge thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Liam Gormley (Eoghan 4th grade), for providing St. Patrick's Day lunch for the committee members. Thank you also to Mrs. Aline Lebbos (3rd grade aide), who prepared a Mediterranean lunch for the team members and for the faculty and staff on Wednesday. Thank you to Mrs. Babs Kleinhenz for preparing a huge tray of delicious sweets for the team members, faculty and staff for three days. Four of our 8th grade math students represented Holy Name School, Saturday, March 21, at Stanford in the California State MATHCOUNTS Competition - David Brown, Lauren Chow, Tianming Chu and Victor Huang. Thank you to Miss Anna Rivieccio for moderating MATHCOUNTS every Wednesday after school. God bless you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos...as I have done for you, you should also do - John 13:15 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL 2015 The Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA) assists in funding the overall budget of the Archdiocese and provides services parishes cannot do themselves. Along with other funding sources, your generosity and commitment to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal allows Archbishop Cordileone and the dedicated staff of the Archdiocese to provide important services to our Universal Church and our local community. Through the Appeal, the Archbishop continues to strengthen the good works of the ministries and agencies that minister to those most in need. The AAA continues to support our children s future by ensuring the availability of a Catholic education. It continues to sponsor ethnic ministries to reach our diverse communities, to assist those embarking on religious vocations, to provide religious education to our parish youth, to strengthen the faith of our young adults and to speak to our greater community about important social policy concerns. Ministries you support by contributing to the Archbishop s Annual Appeal: Parish / School Ministry Support, Centralized Services, Support of Universal Church, Archdiocese Direct Ministry, Clergy Support. ** For about the cost of a cup of Starbucks Coffee per day, you could contribute $500 per year or more to the Archbishop s Appeal to aid the work of the Church and to minister to all those supported by these services and agencies. If you have any questions, please call the Parish office at (415) 664-8590.

For the Jewish people, there was only one covenant, the one made between the Lord God and Israel through Moses at Mount Sinai. For Jeremiah to suggest that God would somehow supersede the covenant with a new one would have sounded audacious to Jewish ears. But in this way he is a predecessor of Jesus who, in the Gospel of John, is continually portrayed as superseding the past, establishing the reign of God in a new way. And in today s Gospel passage, Jesus the new covenant speaks the language of his new commandment of love when he tells of the dying grain of wheat, and of our own need to die to self in order to be raised with Christ. As Lent ends and we prepare to enter into Holy Week, the dying grain of wheat serves as an excellent symbol of the kind of dying and self sacrifice to which disciples are called, a symbol of that new covenant written deep within our hearts. In old Jerusalem at this season of the year, the attempt was made to recall the events leading up to Christ s passion. Those attempts were based not only on time, with celebrations of events as close to the day and hour as possible, but also on people s best guesses as to the actual place of these events. Vast numbers of pilgrims flooded the city during the forty days of Lent, many of them catechumens in their last stages of preparation for initiation. The fourth-century Spanish nun Egeria wrote a delightfully detailed diary of her experience of this lively and aerobic liturgy, which involved hearty singing, strong preaching, and nimble processions across vast and arduous terrain. Much of this energy was lost over the centuries, with the procession of palms a noteworthy exception. Northern climates had to reinterpret this Jerusalem liturgy, using forsythia, willow, or olive branches, but to this day the entry into Holy Week by a community on the move accompanied by joyful song hearkens back to a venerable tradition. Egeria s letters were rediscovered a little more than a hundred years ago, but they reveal a pattern of prayer: full, conscious, active participation, to which we have a right and a duty. Rev. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. I risk being wrong if I trust too much. But I risk living in torment if I don t trust enough. Anonymous
