FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Lately we have heard a lot of auto recalls from different car companies. Of course, those cars that were recalled were fairly new. Well, my car was recalled not because it is new but because it is old. After doing some tune-ups and minor repairs, my auto mechanic recalled my car for the whole weekend to work on its air-conditioning problem. Consequently, I did not have my car for the whole weekend. Thanks to the Canossian Sisters, who are all away for their annual meeting in Alburquerque, N.M. Sr. Stella graciously lent me their car so I was able to respond to some emergencies and hospital calls last weekend. Going back to the auto shop to pick up my car, the mechanic told me that it was not worth fixing because it would just cost me almost as much as the car s bluebook value. I just have to drive without an A/C system in my car. Cognizant of the fact that it is summer time, I started pitying myself. Although, I know I could humbly use my alternative means of transportation, my BMW - my Bart, Muni, Walk. Then I saw another customer who had a severe flat tire on his car. The other mechanic was replacing it with the spare tire which was taken out from the car s trunk. I tried to console myself by saying, At least I can drive my car without AC. Who needs AC in San Francisco anyway? (Well, sometimes!). The other guy can t drive a car without a tire. Yet, I bet he was glad he had a spare tire. Check if you have a spare tire in your car. Well, do you think that we sometimes treat God like a spare tire? When everything seems fine, we forget about the spare tire hidden somewhere in our car. But when we have a flat tire, we take out the spare tire and use it. We only remember its great importance then. Similarly, when we are in trouble and with great problems, that s when we remember the God who has been, is and will always be with us. Instead of treating God as our spare tire, why don t we treat Him as our steering wheel? We can always cling to him and He will lead us along the way. The story is told about a son who e-mailed his filthy rich father: Dad, I feel ashamed going to school in my latest Mercedes Benz here in Berlin while all my classmates come to school by train. A day later, his rich father e-mailed back: Son, stop embarrassing us. I have already deposited enough money in your account to buy you a train. We love you, okay?! I wish I could be like that son. Unfortunately, my dad is not rich and secondly, he has already been recalled by his maker. Good News! July 18, 2010 SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Gn 18:1 10a / Col 1:24 28 / Lk 10:38 42 Martha was anxious and worried about many things. We all know what that s like. We re busy. We have lists of things to do. We might have an electric, handheld, life-saving reminder that beeps before our next appointment. We accomplish a lot. What if someone drops in or wants to set up a meeting or a meal? We can do that. Send me an e-mail. I ll put you on the schedule add you to the list. In today s reading from Genesis, it looks like Abraham would understand the modern pace of hospitality too. Unexpected guests show up. He runs from the tent to greet them. He hastens back to the tent to ask Sarah to prepare food. He runs to the herd to select a calf. His servant hastens to prepare it. Abraham and Sarah s house looks like ours. It can take a lot out of us to keep up the pace of our lives. And now Jesus pushes us to do something even harder. Martha welcomed Jesus and his fellow travelers into her home. She was busy doing what a good hostess does. Mary just sat there. Jesus says she chose the better part. Jesus challenge is about priorities. It s about really being present with the people we re with. Do we dare do that these days? Do we dare park the car, sit still, let the answering machine take the call, drop the TV remote, and look at the other person sitting there? Can we turn off the computer, take out the ear plugs, and ignore the e-mail? This is subtle. We re used to being distracted without noticing it. We do accomplish a lot. A lot of that stuff does need to be done. But why? What is the better part? Dan Finucane sundaybulletins@liguori.org 2010 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. Printed in U.S.A. THE HOLY GHOST FATHERS (Irish Province) Next Sunday, the Second Collection will be the Mission Appeal for the Holy Ghost Fathers. The Holy Ghost Fathers are an International Missionary Society, one of the largest Missionary Congregations in the Church. They are responsible, in large part, for the evangelization of many African people, in countries such as Ghana, Liberia, Angola, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Zambia, Tanzania and Malawi. Some of our missionaries are working in very tense and difficult situations, especially in war ravaged countries. The Holy Ghost Fathers are involved in all kinds of missionary activities from pastoral ministry to educational work at all levels, to the training of native clergy to social and agricultural work. The Holy Ghost Fathers also have missions in Asia and South America. In recent years they have begun to work in China. As they continued their journey he entered a village where a woman whose name was Martha welcomed him. She had a sister named Mary (who) sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak. Martha, burdened with much serving, came to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me by myself to do the serving? Tell her to help me." The Lord said to her in reply, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things. There is need of only one thing. Mary has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her." Luke 10: 38-42 DETAILS, DETAILS, DETAILS... Poor Martha. Patron saint of housewives, servants, waiters, and cooks. She complains to Jesus that her sister has left her to do all the work, and asks him to tell Mary to help her. If you are a stayat-home parent, or caregiver, or work in a restaurant, you know what it is like to be constantly run off your feet. If you have extra people to take care of it is even worse. In Jesus time it was almost unheard of for a woman to sit as a disciple, rather than busying herself with cleaning and food preparation, so Martha s aggravation is very understandable. But consider Jesus comment, Martha, Martha, you are anxious and worried about many things (Luke 10:41). It is a gentle rebuke. The better part chosen by Mary to sit at the feet of the Teacher does not make Mary superior to her sister, but instead shows that she sees the importance of listening to the Lord while he is still with them. Martha is aware of who Jesus is, as in another Gospel passage she acknowledges him as the Messiah (John 11:27), the only person other than Peter to say so directly. Here she has gotten lost in the details of being a hostess. There is a parallel in our lives as a church, for example, when we complain or argue about how the Eucharist is celebrated: the choir is too loud, Father s homily was too long, altar servers shouldn t wear sneakers to church, people are talking too much before Mass, and so on. When these details disrupt our attention and distract us from why we are here in the first place, we have become Marthas. We are here to be like Mary, focused on the Lord. Let s give him our complete attention, along with our profoundest thanks. Copyright 2009, World Library Publications. All rights reserved. ABOUT OUR COVER: Christ in the House of Martha and Mary 1654-55 Jan Vermeer Van Delft Johannes Vermeer or Jan Vermeer (baptized October 31, 1632, died at the age of 43, December 15, 1675) was a Dutch Baroque painter who specialized in domestic interior scenes of ordinary life. His entire life was spent in the town of Delft. Vermeer was a moderately successful provincial painter in his lifetime. He seems never to have been particularly wealthy, perhaps because he produced relatively few paintings, leaving his wife and children in debt at his death. Virtually forgotten for nearly one hundred years, Vermeer was rediscovered in 1866 when the art critic Thore Burger published an essay attributing 66 pictures to him (only 35 paintings are firmly attributed to him today). Since that time Vermeer's reputation has grown, and he is now acknowledged as one of the greatest painters of the Dutch Golden Age, and is particularly renowned for his masterly treatment and use of light in his work. Saint Bridget of Sweden (c. 1303 1373), also known as Birgitta of Sweden, is one of the few Roman Catholic saints of Scandinavia. Sometimes referred to as the "Mystic of the North," Bridget was a wealthy, pious woman who experienced religious visions from her early childhood. After her husband died, she founded a religious order, the Brigittines, and worked to heal a breach in the church that had resulted in the removal of the papacy to Avignon, France. In 1999 Pope John Paul II named her one of the patron saints of Europe, along with St. Therese Benedicta of the Cross and St. Catherine of Siena, two other holy women who devoted their careers to ending religious and political strife in Europe. Living Stewardship Now Develop the habit of thanking people whose work often goes unnoticed, such as supermarket cashiers, postal and delivery people, office cleaners, and fast-food servers.
