The words, of course, are based on today's Gospel, in which we are called as disciples to be salt and light for the world. Children are uninhibited about sharing their faith. It's only when we grow older that we prefer to hide our light under a bushel basket because our culture tends not to emphasize discipleship. The message in this week's readings is clear: in order to give glory to God through our discipleship, we must show the light of Christ in our words and deeds. Not an easy thing for inhibited adults. Often we may think of salt and light in terms of what we do for others, but it can be just as important not to do something, such as getting angry with the stranger on the road, or telling an offensive joke. Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co., Inc. TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- If you share your food with the hungry, provide housing for the homeless, then light shall break forth upon you (Isaiah 58:7-10). Psalm -- The just man is a light in the darkness to the upright (Psalm 112). Second Reading -- My message to you, says Paul, was not clever words of wisdom but the proclamation of Christ crucified (1 Corinthians 2:1-5). Gospel -- You are the salt of the earth, the light of the world. In your good deeds your light shines before others, leading them to glorify God (Matthew 5:13-16). The final decision will be made jointly by JVC architects, the construction firm that is selected and possibly with input from the Diocesan Finance Board. 4. Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time - - February 5, 5, 2017 2017 BOOK Review by Jim Guynup BECOMING A PERSON OF MERCY Personal reflections and practices on the Works of Mercy by Father Max Oliva S.J You all most likely have read book reviews which promise that the book will truly change your life. Of all the many books that I have read no book comes closer to fulfilling that promise than this one. Without a doubt it most certainly has changed mine. Many of us are well-acquainted with Father Oliva, firsthand from the life-changing retreats he has given locally and throughout the world. Nationally this book has been so well-received that Barnes and Noble have given it 5 out of 5 stars! Throughout this book, by utilizing scripture, various contemporary writings and anecdotes, one learns what is truly involved in attaining the ability to practice compassion and mercy. All of this is written in a down-to-earth manner. Questions answered include: How can you forgive a person who has been abusive to you? How are the psalms used to be an effective impetus in following God s plan of practicing mercy? What are the five facets of forgiveness that allows it to become part of the way you live your life? In addition to being a well-written and documented book there is at the end of each chapter within the 112 page book, a thought provoking Reflection and Discussion page that will provide countless hours of discussion and learning for your soul and those you love. May I add that once you go through this book Father Oliva has written many other excellent books including Beatitudes for the Workplace which is excellent for those of you in a challenging work environment. My final thought on these excellent books is why not make them part of your upcoming Lenten plan? (For any questions, suggestions or comments E-Mail KGJ906@aol.com) Knights Korner Are you searching for a way to thank God for all He has given you? Can you spare a couple of hours a month? Then the Knights of Columbus is what you need.
