There is evil. Herod is concerned with protecting his position and his power. Jesus is concerned about protecting the poor and the powerless. Evil disguises itself as good. Jesus offers himself with no disguise or pretense. Evil always puts its self-interest first. Jesus always puts the poor, the afflicted, and the lowly first. The holidays are over and we return to Ordinary Time. We return to our ordinary lives. This is the most important time because it is during these ordinary days that we strengthen our understanding of the good, of Jesus, and our resolve to do good in a world where evil often seems too powerful. The joy and the promise of Christmas are made real in these ordinary days. This is the Epiphany. TODAY S READINGS First Reading -- Rise up in splendor, Jerusalem! The Lord shines upon you and the glory of the Lord appears over you (Isaiah 60:1-6). Psalm -- Lord, every nation on earth will adore you (Psalm 72). Second Reading -- The Gentiles are coheirs, copartners in the promise in Christ Jesus (Ephesians 3:2-3a, 5-6). Gospel -- Magi from the east arrive looking for the newborn king of the Jews (Matthew 2:1-12). Such a blessing sustains the parents by imparting grace and comfort in times of concern and need, unites the parish in prayer for the unborn child, and fosters respect for human life within society. The Rite will usually be conducted on the second weekend of each month: Next blessing will be on January 7/8.

The Epiphany of the Lord January 8, 2017 Two Epiphany Traditions 1. Epiphany Proclamation 2017 While a day like Christmas is fixed in our minds and on the calendars on December 25th, many of the important feasts of the Church year move, based upon the date that Easter is set. Easter changes each year moving to the Sunday after the "Paschal Full Moon," and can fall between March 22 and April 25. In ancient times before calendars were common, most people did not know the dates for the upcoming Liturgical year. On Epiphany Sunday, the upcoming dates were "proclaimed". After the singing of the Gospel, a Deacon or cantor, in keeping with an ancient practice of Holy Church, announces from the ambo the moveable feasts of the current year according to *this formula: Know, dear brothers and sisters, that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ, so by leave of God s mercy we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our Savior. On the First day of March will fall Ash Wednesday, and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season. On the Sixteenth day of April you will celebrate with Joy Easter Sunday, the Paschal feast of our Lord Jesus Christ. On Sunday, the Twenty-Eighth day of May, will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ. On Sunday, the Fourth day of June, the feast of Pentecost (our parish feast day). On Sunday, the Eighteenth day of June, the feast of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. On the Third day of December, the First Sunday of Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen. 2. Epiphany Blessing of the Doors The Blessing of the Doors has root in Polish and German customs. It recalls the visit of the Magi, strangers in a foreign land, and how they were welcomed by Mary and Joseph at the stable in Bethlehem. The blessing reminds us of the welcome that we owe to all who visit us, regarding them as nothing less than Christ himself, or as Scripture has it, Do not neglect hospitality, for through it, some have unknowingly entertained angels. [Hebrews 13:2] Tradition holds that the doors are chalked with a combination of the letters of the initials of the Magi (Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar) and the numbers of the new year. For 2017, it would look like 20 + C + M + B + 17. (Others attribute the letters to the Latin: Christus mansionem benedicat = May Christ bless this house. ) A simple banner made of paper with the same marking [20 + C + M + B + 17] could also be substituted. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778 HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an inservice offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support. GUARDIAN ANGEL CATHEDRAL UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY FOR LITURGICAL MINISTERS In an effort to promote a sense of community and belonging among all Catholic Churches in the Diocese of Las Vegas, we would like to extend an invitation to Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, Ushers, and adult Altar Servers, to serve at the Cathedral on one weekend, at one Mass each month. Ministering at the Cathedral is an opportunity to experience the Universal Church, considering ninety-five percent of those attending Mass are visitors from around the world. It is also an opportunity to become better acquainted with your Cathedral. The Guardian Angel Cathedral is the Bishop s church. It s where he ordains new priests and deacons, administers the Sacraments, celebrates the Sacred Triduum and Holy Days throughout the Liturgical Year. Other liturgies celebrated at the Cathedral are the Mass of Sending Forth for Seminarians, the White Mass for Catholic Physicians, the Red Mass for Catholic Attorneys, and various Masses for active ministries within the diocese. Please prayerfully consider taking advantage of this opportunity to serve the Church and the People of God. For more information please contact Joseph von Hazmburg at the Guardian Angel Cathedral office at (702)735-5241 or adminassist@gaclv.org. Food for the Poor Please remember to bring food items for Casa de Luz each weekend. Boxed and canned items are most appreciated: Peanut butter, jelly, canned meats, tuna, cereals (hot and cold), rice, beans, etc. Page 8
