The underlying theme of the holiday is that trees and nature and the environment are important parts of the universe in which we live. Next year, God willing, we will have a community Tu B'Shevat Seder. It is a great way to enjoy this holiday. For now, please enjoy the following summary of the holiday which was prepared by MY JEWISH LEARNING. Tu Bishvat is a holiday intimately connected to the agricultural cycle of the Land of Israel. Falling in the middle of the Jewish month of Shvat, the 15th day of the month is the New Year of Trees. Today, this holiday is often celebrated by planting saplings and also by participating in a seder-meal that echoes the Passoverseder, in which the produce of trees, including fruits and nuts, are eaten. Ideas and Beliefs The Bible expresses a great reverence for fruit trees as symbols of God's bounty and beneficence. Special laws were formulated to While we don't have regular Saturday morning services until next May, Rabbi Jay will be at the JCC each Saturday at 10:00 am. At that time, he will be conducting a study class for anyone who attends, with topics ranging from the Torah portion of the week, to the liturgy, to theology. Additionally, the Rabbi will gladly accommodate requests for specific topics. Everyone is invited to join the learning! Please help us create a special atmosphere by not using electronic devices (phones, cameras, games etc) in or around the synagogue on Saturday and Holidays. P X 4 MARCH 15TH SAVE THE DATE SATURDAY EVENING PPPP - Purim Pizza Pasta Party Come in costume - and be entered for a prize The Megillah will be read and we will have some fun interactive activities. protect fruit trees in times of war and ensure that the produce of trees would not be picked until the trees were mature enough and tithes were given from them. In order to calculate the age of trees, both for determining when they could be harvested and when they were to be tithed for the Temple, the Talmudic Rabbis established the 15th day (Tu) of the month of Shvat as the official "birthday" of trees. Subsequent to the destruction of the Temple, Tu Bishvat lost much of its relevance, but in the middle ages it was rediscovered by Jewish mystics. In the modern period it has enjoyed another revival as a holiday that links Jews with the land of Israel and as a Jewish celebration of the environment. Practices When the Temple stood in Jerusalem, Tu Bishvat served as the day on which farmers offered the first fruits of the trees they planted, after the trees had turned four years old. The following Tu Bishvat signified when the farmers were allowed to begin making use of the produce of the trees they planted, whether for personal or economic reasons. In the middle ages, the Jewish mystics of Safed developed a ritual meal celebrated on Tu Bishvat that was modeled on the Passover seder. Four cups of wine were drunk and seven "fruits" symbolic of those of the Holy Land were eaten. With the rise of Zionism in the late 19th century, Tu Bishvat was rediscovered as a celebration that links the Jews with their land. The holiday became one of rededication to the ecology of the denuded Sunday, March 16th 11:00 AM - 2:00 PM at Beth Am Shalom 1235 Highway 70 Lakewood, NJ COMMUNITY SEDER COMMUNITY SEDER Tuesday, April 15 at 5:30 PM JCC of LBI Social Hall DETAILS TO FOLLOW YAHRZEITS FOR NEXT WEEK These names will be read at services on January 17, 2014 Julius Marmon *Rose Lyons Glickman Nathan Printz Jack Eisenberg Mina Rosenbaum Anna Herman William Silver Hettie Rosenthal Ethel Sharken

land, with the planting of trees taking center stage in the celebration. Jews outside of Israel contribute money to plant trees there and/or plant trees in their own communities. With the increased concern for the environment in recent years, Tu Bishvat has taken on an additional meaning as a day on which Jews can express and act on their concern for the ecological well-being of the world in which we live. This has led to the rediscovery of the mystical Tu Bishvat seder, now transformed into a celebration of God's bounty and the environment. Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. BRICK PAVERS MINYANIM In the last few months, several members of our congregation have suffered the loss of loved ones and we have organized shiva minyanim for them. We thank all of those who supported these mourners by being part of the shiva. The paver fund raising program is ongoing. Pavers will be installed two times a year: spring and fall. To download the paver order form, click on this link: PAVERS. Proceeds of this program will go towards the "burning of our mortgage." To assure that there will be a minyan to recite the prayer for the deceased with the bereaved family is one of the highest mitzvahs a person can do for another in our community. It is not necessary that you know the deceased or the mourner for your presence to help in comforting the mourners as they grieve and heal. One of our new members, Harris Weisel, will be coordinating minyanim for the JCC. Please contact the office if you would be interested in being notified if a minyan is needed and will attend when possible.
