Magdalen of Canossa, their Foundress, received approval of the Church to start the Congregation of the Canossian Daughters of Charity on May 8,1808 in Verona, Italy. She was born on March 1, 1774 and died on April 10,1835. She was canonized as St. Magdalen of Canossa on October 2, 1988. St. Magdalen of Canossa had three sisters and one brother. The children, while still very young, experienced a great loss. Their father, the Marquis Octavio, died suddenly in an accident, and their mother, Lady Theresa remarried. The little sisters and brothers were left in the care of the extended family who provided every comfort to them, but could not give them what they most needed: the love and care of their parents. In the life of St. Magdalen however, it is evident that God can draw good from every situation, no matter how undesirable or painful. WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM This program is designed for children in grades K-8th attending public school. Catechism classes (CCD) are held: Saturday 10 AM-12 Noon or (alternate choice) Tuesday 5:15-6:30 PM All children who have already received the Sacraments are asked to attend. Knowing the basics of our Catholic teachings and religion requires more than three or four years of Religious Education, because it is the Formation of faith for life. The program includes instruction for First Eucharist and Confirmation. We had a good number of children in 2006-2007, however, we feel that there are still many children in our parish boundaries attending public schools who are not attending our Religious Ed. Program. Please help us spread the word. It s everybody s responsibility. RCIA for Children and Youth ages 7-17 who need the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist: Tuesday 5:15-6:30 PM Parents may register their children after Mass on Saturday and Sunday or at the Pastoral Center, Monday to Friday from 9:30 AM 3 PM CLASSES begin Saturday, September 22 and Tuesday September 25 Most importantly, we would like to thank our catechists, who volunteer weekly and all the parents, grandparents and guardians who bring the children to religious education classes. It s a lifechanging invitation, and like so many other such invitations, it requires a great deal of deliberation and discernment. Whether we choose marriage, ordination, single life, or community life, we know the serious planning and consideration that accompany these profound decisions. Like the tower-builder in the Gospel, we have weighed both the monetary and emotional cost. We have pondered and planned our lives in the direction to which we believe God has called us. And while we pray for guidance and acceptance of God s will, we often fail to understand so much. Like Solomon, we turn to God for wisdom and counsel in our life-changing decisions. Copyright, J. S. WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 6 HOLY NAME CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC The Holy Name Conservatory of Music offers private lessons in piano, voice & violin to Holy Name School students, alumni and parishioners. All students are invited to participate in the Conservatory s program of recitals held throughout the year. Private study on a musical instrument is a rewarding endeavor that offers an appreciation for the arts, while teaching a wide range of skills including hand-eye coordination, self-discipline and time management. Registrations for 2007-08 are still being accepted. Registering in the Fall applies to the full school year. The fall payment is due with the registration form.
