Joe Mallia On behalf of myself and all who are part of the pastoral team, I want to wish all of you a Happy and Holy New Year, but as I said in my Christmas Day homily, God is not about "wishing". When someone "wishes" you something, they are not really willing to help it come true. God is always willing and ready to help and we as the disciples of the Lord must do the same. SO, it is our hope that together in our joint prayer, ministry, service and fellowship times we can make this a happy and holy new year with and for each other. That should be the goal for any community of faith. We must strive to unite ourselves more completely to God and to each other. The Bible shows us very clearly, what the early church understood a Christian community should look like and we should try to imitate them. This time of year fills us with an optimism of a new beginning and it should. So, I invite you to not simply have a "resolution" but to be resolute about being more active in the parish, by volunteering, by becoming a liturgical minister, by being part of the festival committee, by increasing your prayer life, by attending adult formation opportunities, by not missing mass, or by helping with our religious formation program or any other group. We have so much going on at our parishes, but we need more people and we could do more if more people were willing to step up and assume their rightful role. Roughly only a third of the parish is active in support of the ministry both through their time, talent and treasure. If we can do all this with only a third, just think of what could happen if we got half! God is waiting to do great things in our lives if we would simply allow God to work through us. God wants to send blessings upon blessings, God wants to strengthen our marriages and other relationships, God wants us to prosper financially, God wants to foster peace and reconciliation in our world, but we are to be cooperators in the building of the Kingdom of God. We must open our hearts and minds to the wonder of God and the mystery of God's power waiting to be unleashed in us. Too often, just when the opportunity presents itself, we back off from God by closing our hearts and our minds just when we should be opening them further. We get tense, we are filled with fear, and we allow our hesitancy to override our minds and hearts. That is why so many resolutions fall apart. We know we want to do something and that it would be good for us, but the thought of changing things, even for the better, pulls us back to our comfort zone. This year, take one step forward in faith. Where we are at is not the fullness of what God has planned for us and we know we could do more, so why not take one step. I am not asking for a total conversion of your mind and heart (though I think that will happen). But one step could lead to another step and that is when courage and momentum for good happens. As the new year breaks upon us, let us all pray that we will all be resolute in our commitment to take one step forward in faith and not allow another year to fall by the wayside due to fear. If we are resolute, then we will in fact have a good and holy new year. May God be praised this day and always in our lives. God bless you all. Keep those Scrip orders coming!!! At Holy Family, we are in need of further help in running the program and utilizing its many benefits. We are missing out on a great way of raising funds for our kids when we fail to take advantage of such an easy program. You buy the gift cards and use them on items you already buy, and we gain a percentage of your purchase for programs here at our parishes. Please consider using the Scrip program more. January 1, 2017 Page 3 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 Thank you again... To all of you who were so kind in giving of your time and talent to our parishes during the Christmas masses. I was very pleased to see how well everything ran and how so many were willing to help. The liturgies were very good and mostly well attended. I was pleased to see that people took advantage of the 6 pm masses and the staff will look at the mass counts to see if we are really providing the best opportunities for people to attend mass. Next year will be a bit of a challenge with Christmas eve falling on the afternoon of the Fourth Sunday of Advent, but our goal is always to make sure we do more than say we want you to go to mass. We want to make sure that it is possible as well. Thank you again for all participation in the prayer and worship of God. I also want to thank those who were so kind to myself, Fr. Sean and Deacon Alan in a personal way this Christmas. We do appreciate your kindness towards us and we are humbled by your generosity. Master Planning Meeting: Both our parishes are undertaking the tedious work of creating a master plan. We are studying the needs of the parishes as we move forward and what our present situations are, both strengths and weaknesses. Both parishes will be meeting with perspective candidates from architectural firms and builders to get an idea of what kind of work and costs we might be looking at. This meeting will take place this Thursday night at St. Augustine with both parishes being represented. No final plans or ideas have been reached yet, so if you are hearing rumors, dismiss them as simply that. Yes, there are ideas of what we believe is needed and yes there are somethings that are a clear need, but what resolutions or ideas will come out of this meeting are still unknown. That is why we need the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Thank you for your prayers. How about becoming a Saint? I am not talking about the ones in heaven, but the ones who attend our school. This might just be a good time to make the switch over and become a student at our parish school. Take advantage of paying very little to see if you would not benefit from attending our school. This might just be the time to take the chance to do what you have always wanted to do. Be a part of what is a very exciting time of planning for the future growth of our school! Now is the time to be a Saint! Howard House update The Archdiocese has given us the green light to accept a bid that was put on the Howard Street house and we will be able to close on the house in short order. That leaves us with the houses on Gleason Street and the one on Franklin Street to attend to. The master plan committee will undertake those plans along with the finance council. The sale of the house will help us to pay off an unpaid bill to the MCC that has been lingering for many years. We will also be able to pay off another unpaid bill from that time period. In total, we will pay off nearly $90,000 in past due debt! That is a good start, but more needs to be done to continue our elimination of debt at St. Augustine. This debt has been on the books for some time now and preceded Fr. Horn. This debt is also not interest bearing, but still needs to be paid off. There is no debt at Holy Family. With the reduction of these two bills, we can make a greater impact on the remaining debt that will be highlighted in the next quarterly fiscal report. Both parishes continue to show an improved financial picture. We are able to put money into our savings accounts as well as keep up with all present bills and take care of needed maintenance. We will be taking steps to make sure that the parking lot at Holy Family be addressed soon as the winter weather breaks. This is a very important repair along with the sidewalks along the church which are crumbling and becoming a trip and fall hazard. I hope these updates are helpful to you. I very much want to be open with you about what we are planning here at the parish and how your money is being used. Bring your bottles to church next week. Next week we will be celebrating the feast of Epiphany. In previous years we have handed out bottles for holy water that you took home with you. By now, you all have several of these bottles at home and so I do not think we need to spend the money purchasing new bottles each and every year. Further, any bottle that has a lid on it can be used to bring holy water home. So, if you want holy water for your home, we will be blessing the water at this mass and you may then take some home with you. You can also get holy water from the church throughout the year. We will be handing out the blessed chalk at all the masses as well. Thank you for understanding. Have a great week.

At St. Augustine, SCRIP is available for purchase Monday - Friday 7:45am - 8:15am and Monday - Thursday 2:30pm - 2:50pm. SCRIP is also sold the 3rd Sunday of every month at coffee & donuts following the Sunday morning Masses. At Holy Family, SCRIP is available for purchase at the parish office during regular business hours. It is suggested that you call ahead to see if what you need is available. If you have any questions, please contact the Parish Office. And there is a gift for you too. During the month of December, you can use the whole SCRIP rebate towards your school and faith formation tuition. "And Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart." Supernatural communication was nothing new for Mary. The angel Gabriel had already appeared and spoken to her when she agreed to bear God's Son. Her husband, Joseph, also had a kind of divine intervention in the dream where the angel told him to go ahead and marry her. When she was first pregnant, her cousin, Elizabeth, had been led by the Holy Spirit to know the secret that Mary was "the mother of my Lord" (Lk 1:43). Now, Jesus has just been born and a crew of earthy shepherds appears at her door with a message from heaven: that the Savior has been born. And Mary believed them. She did not doubt their sincerity or the authenticity of their message. She took the words to heart, and meditated upon the meaning of it all. What might strike us as peculiar in all of this is that God chose to speak to Mary in a variety of ways. This holy and immaculate woman, this Mother of God, did not always receive direct communication from on high. Sometimes, God chose to speak to her through other people. Sometimes, he revealed himself to them in order to reveal himself to her. And God does the same with us. It's easy to daydream about having our own personal revelation from God, to hear his voice loud and clear, directing, encouraging, and supporting us in our times of need and confusion. But this isn't the standard pattern of God's operation. Mary was tuned in enough to hear God's voice all around her instead of expecting it to always sound the same. We can imitate this same kind of openness by seeking to discover how God may be speaking to us through the voices of others. Baptism of the Lord By being baptized, Jesus emphasized the importance of participating in this sacred action. And later in his ministry, he confirmed the significance of baptism when he instructed his apostles to "make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (Mt 28:19). Through baptism, we become disciples of Jesus. As baptized Christians, we are both called and equipped to be Christ's followers, his pupils, and his friends. Today, we might ask ourselves if we are embracing this calling wholeheartedly. Do we follow Jesus' example of love for God and neighbor? Do we study his word and live by his teaching? Do we nurture our relationship with him, as we would with any friend? Jesus humbled himself for our sake. Let us show our gratitude by being his faithful disciples today and every day. 2013 Liturgical Publications Inc Intercessory prayer reflects God s own character of outgoing love and mercy. God wants us to think like He does, and praying for others helps us to think beyond ourselves and to grow in compassion for others.

Our campaign number is 29163. Your items are delivered to the school parking lot for pick up every other Monday. They take check, cash, debit and credit cards. It s an easy way to have meals at your fingertips for the busy holiday season, jam-packed school days, and weekends! The fundraising campaign started September 27th and will run through February 9th. Even though the initial phase of our campaign ended on November 11th (where our school received 20% of all product orders and 40% of all egift card orders placed), from now until the end of the campaign on FEBRUARY 9 th, 2017, the school will receive quarterly checks of 5% of all product orders placed. Our campaign goal this year is $500 (we re over halfway there!). At any time, you can log on and check on our school s progress. January 1, 2017 Page 11 What are Columbian Squires? An organization of more than 20,000 Catholic young men, ages 10 to18 years old, who have fun and share their Catholic faith, help people in need, and enjoy the company of friends in social, family, athletic, cultural, civic and spiritual activities. As a Squire, you ll be a member of one of more than 1,300 circles located throughout the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Philippines, the Caribbean, and other places where Knights of Columbus councils are located. Every circle is sponsored by a Knights of Columbus council and Knights serve as adult counselors to the group, but you do not have to be related to a Knight to join, all are welcome. A Squires circle is designed to be run both by and for young men. Through their local circle, Squires work and socialize as a group of friends, gradually developing into Catholic leaders. The Squires emblem (as seen above) symbolizes the ideals which identify a squire. Centered in a circle and on the arms of a Maltese cross are the letters P, I, S and C (which symbolize the unity of physical, intellectual, spiritual, and civic life in a squire). Centered on the cross are the large letters C representing Christ, S, the squires, and K the Knights of Columbus by whom the Squires program is sponsored. Squires graduating from the program at age 18 are eligible for college and vocations scholarships offered by the Knights of Columbus Supreme Council office. They are urged to join the Knights to continue their commitment to Columbanism. If you are a Catholic young man, 10 to 18 years old, you should be a member of the Columbian Squires; you do not have to be related to a Knight to join. Your local circle, which includes members from St. Augustine Parish & Holy Family Parish, holds meetings on the 2 st and 4 rd Sunday of the month from 1:00-3:00 at the Richmond KofC Hall, transportation can be arranged if needed.
