1 June 10, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia "I heard you in the garden: but I was afraid, because I was naked, so I hid myself." This response of Adam to God is a strikingly poignant statement. Recall that God came to walk with Adam everyday. God was not a stranger, he had built a relationship with Adam and yet when the reality of his sin was before him, instead of relying on the love of God, Adam resorts to fear and hides from God. How do we turn away from the one who loves us most? How do we let our shame lead us to hide it even from the one who would and will forgive us because of his unconditional love for us? The fact that Adam and Eve never ask for forgiveness in the story is stunning, is it not? Adam blames Eve, she blames the serpent and neither turn to the Lord and say, I am sorry. It made more sense to them to blame others, to rationalize the sin rather than seek conversion. Rather than be embraced by God's love, they cover themselves with a fig leaf trying to make it somehow better. We cover up our sins rather than face them and thus we remain in them. We hide even when God is looking for us. We fail to reach out to him in our need, even when he is calling our name. The saddest thing I have ever heard as a priest is when people tell me that they are not sure that God will forgive them. Like Adam and Eve, they cannot see past the shame they feel. St. Paul teaches us, "what can separate us from the love of God?" The answer he tells us is that nothing in this world or the next can since we have been redeemed by Christ Jesus, but yet so often we remain hidden from the grace of forgiveness because we would rather try to hide the sin through flimsy excuses like trying to protect ourselves by fig leaves, rather than admit we have sinned and come out into the light of forgiveness. Tenth Sunday in Ordinary Time June 10, 2018 truth, so the opposite is true of the devil who rightly is called the father of all lies. Do not be deceived. Do not be afraid of God who seeks not to punish but to restore. Do not give into lies and misconceptions, but be wrapped up in the truth which comes forth from the mouth of God. Have a great week and God bless. God told me that he wanted me to have a $54 million dollar jet That is not true, but I am sure that by now you have heard about the supposed preacher who recently said exactly that. He needs the plane to get around to spread the Gospel quicker than the other three planes he has to get him there. I am not asking for money for myself, but I am asking you to make sure you do your best to weekly support the parish. You weekly gift to the Lord is important for our ability to budget and like any business, manage cash flow. Even when you are away, we need to keep the temporal reality of the parish moving forward. I encourage you to think about electronic giving if you go away for long periods of time during the summer or winter months. Though some preachers are looking out for their best interest, I am only looking out for yours. Help your parish maintain the fiscal stability it presently enjoys by providing your weekly return to the Lord of what God has given you. Thank you in advance for your support. CSA If you have not already pledged to the CSA, I would ask that you please take care of this as soon as possible. We would like to wrap up the pledge portion of the campaign in the next couple of weeks. Please fill out the form that was mailed to you or that is printed in the parish paper and drop it into the collection basket or mail it to the parish office. Please do not delay. Again, we simply ask that for those who pledged last year to make a similar gift this year, and for those who did not participate last year, to give any amount, and lets see if we can't build on last year's very successful campaign. Thank you. We need to stop hiding and we need to come out into the open about our sins. We all sin. I sin. I sin daily. I know that and so I find time to make sure I confess my sins to a priest on a regular basis. The pope goes regularly. Adam thinks that if he can hide from God School is out everything will be OK. How foolish not to realize that it is Schools are letting out for summer vacation, in fact at not in the hiding from God will the situation of our lives St. Augustine School we are already dismissed for the summer improve, but it is in the exposing of ourselves to God that holidays. With that comes the increase of children running we are made whole. Maybe the question for us needs to around, riding their bikes and so on during the day. Please be be, Who told you that you do not need to confess your careful as you drive and stay alert to the possibility of a child sins? Like the devil who convinced Adam and Eve that darting out in front of your car. Let us all be attentive so that nothing bad would happen if they disobeyed God, the everyone can have a safe and enjoyable summer. advice that you don't need to go to confession is a lie as well. All the devil can do is lie. God is the author of all Continued on Page 3

3 June 10, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 I would also encourage all parents to make sure that they set time aside each day for their child/ren to spend time reading. It is very important that children read each day and also to find appropriate time to play outside, do work around the house and stay away from TV and video games. Summer is important to rest and have fun, but that does not mean we should be entertained the entire time. Keeping mentally sharp and physically active are good ways of keeping healthy and creating good habits that will serve in the long term as well as the short term. Enjoy your summer break. Holy Family Parish Celebration next weekend You are all invited to come have fun at Holy Family next weekend. There is a wonderful dinner, live auction, comedian and a band for Saturday night. If you can't make the dinner, the band will play later on around 8:30pm and there is no cover charge. There is also a silent auction. On Sunday, we will have mass under the tent, a picnic lunch for a free-will donation, a variety of raffles, a free children's raffle, pony rides, a petting zoo and children's games. There is fun for the whole family. Children must be present to win the children's raffles. The event on Sunday wraps up around 3:00pm. So come and share part of Father's Day at Holy Family. We look forward to seeing you all there. Still need to get the word out about Kickball We are struggling to put together teams for our kickball league. Please get the word out and encourage people to sign up to play. There is no cost to register - all you need to do is me at frjoe.mallia@gmail.com to sign up. I am hoping to have at least four teams so we need to hear from you soon. Thank you for getting the good word out. Page 3 Thank you to all who planned and participated last weekend Thank you to all who planned and participated in the Walk With Jesus on Sunday. There is a lot of planning and coordinating to make that happen and I am grateful to all those who give so much of their time and energy so that we can all have a prayerful, safe and enjoyable experience. If you were not able to make it this year, please plan on next year. It was great to see how even a little rain did not dampen the spirits of all those who walked and rode. Thank you again. B. L. A. 10 Page 10 St. Augustine School June 10, 2018 St. Augustine Festival Flea Market 2018 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook It is better to be the child of God than the king of the whole world. St. Aloysius Gonzaga When many of us hear the word Gonzaga, we often associate it with NCAA March Madness, or the college basketball playoffs. But Gonzaga isn t just the name of a university in Spokane, Washington. On Thursday, June 21, the Catholic Church celebrates the memorial of Saint Aloysius Gonzaga, a Jesuit priest born in 1568 in northern Italy. At age 9, the young boy made a vow of chastity. Aloysius mother encouraged her son to be a priest. His father Ferdinand, the Marquis of Castiglione, on the other hand, refused to give him permission for three years. Ferdinand had planned for his son to join the military. St. Aloysius joined the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, because he was instructed to in a vision of the Holy Mother. In 1580, he received his first communion from another well-known saint, Cardinal Charles Borromeo. Aloysius died at the age of 23, in 1591, while caring for those afflicted with plague. Plague is a very contagious disease often with the symptoms of fever and delirium. He is the patron saint of all Christian youth and young students. Prayer to Saint Aloysius Gonzaga Dear Christian Youth, you were a faithful follower of Christ in the Society of Jesus. You steadily strove for perfection while generously serving the plague stricken. Help our youth today who are faced with a plague of false cults and false gods. Show them how to harness their energies and to use them for their own and other s fulfillment - which will redound to the greater glory of God. Amen Have a safe, happy, and prayer-filled summer! Mrs. Dolly Bertossi St. Augustine Latchkey Program Now is the time to clean your attic and get your leftover garage sale items together and ready to donate them to the 2018 St. Augustine Festival Flea Market. We are also looking for some strong people to help move the donated items and for set up.
