1 November 18, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia This may be hard to believe but we are drawing to the end of another liturgical year. In fact next Sunday is the feast of Christ the King and then we head in to Advent. Ready or not, here it comes. With that in mind, the readings begin to shift a bit to the theme of the return of Jesus to the world. Though we do not know when this will be, we do believe that one day, Jesus will return in his glory to judge the living and the dead. Though this should not scare us, it is the cause of some anxiety on the part of many people. In fact, some preachers use it as a way to scare people into turning over huge sums of money and some have even convinced people to sell their homes and give up their jobs in the imminent return of Jesus. No need to worry, I'm not predicting anything like that and if anyone tells you he or she knows, just be sure they are lying. Thirty-third Sunday in Ordinary Time November 18, 2018 The Bible in fact tells us that the situation in the world will be bad, but that those things are bound to happen and are not signs of the end. The Bible only tells us to be prepared and that is where the theme of last week should offer us some direction as to how to live. If you recall, last week the readings were about a relationship built on trust with God. If we have that relationship of trust, then we place our lives and everything within them in the service of God and we do that because God is always faithful. God has promised that if we trust in him he will make us ready for the day of judgment. Our anxiety comes from our inability to control the situation, but if God is in control, we do not worry. It is kind of like when most people fly on a plane. I know when I get into my seat and settle in, I do not ever worry if the people who checked the plane did their job and I certainly do not worry about the ability of the continued on Page 3

3 November 18, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 pilot. I relax and I enjoy the flight. The same thing is true of God in my life. Why should I worry if God is leading the way. I have a job to do in life in response to God's will and as long as I remain faithful to God's will, I can navigate my way through life. I know that good things and bad things are going to happen, but I can't lose sight of God. I know that distractions and my own desires could lead me astray, but again, I have to remain focused on God. Going back to the plane analogy, as long as I sit in my seat with my seat belt fastened, even when the flight is smooth, if some turbulence comes up I have nothing to fear because I am prepared. Get it! As we draw to the end of this liturgical year and look forward to another year of grace, the level of our trust in God is again placed firmly before us. To what level do we trust God? What and why do we find ourselves holding back? Why are we still reluctant to place all our trust in him? As we prepare to enter Advent and Christmas, may the gift we seek to offer God this year comes in the form of our total trust in him. God bless. Thanksgiving Day We will again be having two masses for Thanksgiving this year. On Wednesday evening there is a mass at Holy Family at 7:00 p.m. and on Thursday morning at St. Augustine at 8:00 a.m. It is always a good way to begin this day by giving thanks to the Lord who makes all this possible. Making plans for Christmas? This year we will again be having three masses at each parish on Christmas Eve. There will be a 4:00pm, a 6:00pm and 12:00am Midnight mass. Because of the growing popularity of the 6:00pm mass, there is no longer a need to set up overflow seating in the basement at Holy Family. I know that there is always the temptation for many people to go to the 4:00pm mass, but the 6:00pm is still pretty early and there is comfortable seating at that mass. There is of course plenty of room at the midnight masses as well as the masses on Christmas Day. When making plans for the holidays, this year maybe we can make plans around mass rather than trying to "fit mass in." After all, it is His birthday and we really should make it about him. It would be rude to have the party and forget to invite the guest of honor. Just a thought. Bad weather warning Just a reminder that on the days when school is cancelled because of dangerous weather, we also cancel the morning mass and the intention for that Page 3 mass is moved to the next mass. If it is not safe for our kids to be on the roads, it is also not safe for others to be on the roads. We do not want people falling or getting into an accident because of slippery roads. We always do our best to have the parking lot and sidewalks plowed and salted for the weekend masses so we do not foresee the need to ever cancel a weekend mass. During the week, please check to see if the Richmond Schools or the Memphis Schools are closed, the daily mass at that location will be closed. Also, please call the office to make sure that someone is here on those days before making a trip out. Thank you. New employees We have hired some part time help at both parishes to help us fix things and keep things in clean and running order. This added expense is needed as we try to keep up with aging buildings and as we have more activities at our parishes. Two people were hired at St. Augustine to help Brian keep up with the all the buildings we have. Though he is doing a great job, he is only one person and can't possibly get to everything. At Holy Family, we now have a person who will have a regular schedule to help us keep things running. When the buildings were new, there was not a need for such a person and having someone on call was enough. That is no longer possible and there is a lot that has been overlooked as a result. We need to address how we maintain our buildings if we are to avoid large expenses in the near future that could be avoided with regular care. All those hired are members of our parishes and also have a vested interest in making sure that everything is looking good and running well. Just want to keep you informed as to how we are being careful stewards of the resources you provide. Have a great week and God bless you all BLOOD DRIVE Monday, November 19, :00pm to 6:00pm St. Augustine Parish Hall Main Street, Richmond Sponsored by K of C Richmond To schedule an appointment, call RED CROSS ( )

Children can have their picture taken with Santa Clause. Oplatki The word Bethlehem means House of Bread. The breaking of bread is a sign of charity, unity, and friendship. Religious family traditions and customs bring the truths of faith into the home. One of these beautiful Christmas customs is the Christmas Wafer. A Wafer bearing a simple design commemorative of Christ s birth is broken by the head of the family and distributed to each member. With a simple prayer for God s grace and welfare of the present and absent members of the family, the head family member breaks the wafer and distributes it, a piece to each one at the table. While doing so, each member of the family is kissed and is wished a joyful feast. The other family members, then, greet one another in the same way. The spiritual lesson in this age old custom is unity of the family, the main pillar of society. The bond of unity is the Christ-like charity that should exist amongst the members of the family. The father of the family is the link in the unbroken chain of One Body, One Bread, One Christ, One Church. The family joins him in the eternal procession no matter where they are. For there is a universal longing by men to be always with one another, with God. All this brings to mind clearly our charity for one another, to seek salvation together. Family customs remind us that we seek and obtain salvation with the help of all others at all times. Oplatki is now available (WHILE SUPPLIES LAST) at both St. Augustine and Holy Family Parish Offices. Suggested donation: $3.00 each.

10 Page 10 St. Augustine School November 18, 2018 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Kinder-Garden Corner In August I was blessed with a special delivery of 13 wonderful little seedlings. They came shy and quiet, excited and boisterous, eager and apprehensive. Their parents delivered them to me trustingly - and a little bit hesitantly. I happily welcomed them into my kinder-garden, knowing that this would be a year full of growing and learning. As our year has progressed my seedlings have begun to learn, and what is so wonderful about this age group is that they are so eager and so they soak up everything that comes their way much like the seedlings in the wild. We are learning to read! We are being introduced to basic math concepts, and we love to make and find patterns everywhere!! We have learned that God is always with us and we can talk to Him any time and any where. We ve learned about the wonderful world He made for us. We learned to pray the Rosary during the month of October and we are learning about our saints during the month of November. We enjoy going to Mass each week and learning more about our faith through Fr. Joe and Fr. John. We are counting our days in school and each day we add a blessing. We are coloring and cutting, gluing and creating. We are learning to get along and problem solve. We are accepting and protective of each other at all times. We are growing in knowledge, but we are growing in many other ways too. With each new month I see tiny buds on each of my seedlings and I wait in anticipation of all that is yet to come. Thank you so much for your continued support of our school! Please join us some Wednesday at 8:00 a.m. for our school Mass so you can feel the magic of our young celebrating their faith. God bless! Mrs. Ann Perry Kindergarten Teacher Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School would like to wish you and your families a very Happy Thanksgiving! We hope you get to spend time with your loved ones and have time to reflect on all you are thankful for this year. We have so many things to be thankful for; our amazing students and their families, the incredible work our staff puts in every day, the strong support we receive from our community, and so much more. We are incredibly thankful for the work we get to do each day. St. Augustine School would like to thank the Richmond Catholic Education Foundation for their very generous donation to our school. The donated funds will be used to add books to our school library, purchase supplies for our Science Olympiad team, and improve access to technology in our building for staff and students. Thank you so much. We are grateful for your support! Handling Holiday Grief: An Evening of Education, Support and Remembrance Whatever your age, whom ever has died, whatever the cause of death, holidays lived in the absence of someone dear can be very difficult times. Society encourages us to join the holiday spirit, but all around the sounds, sights and smells trigger memories of the one you loved has died. You are invited to an evening of education, support and remembrance that will help you better cope with your grief during this time of the year.
