1 May 27, 2018 The Parishes of Page 1 The Most Holy Trinity May 27, 2018 MALLIA'S MOMENTS by Fr. Joe Mallia St. Philip Neri, pray for us. This weekend we mark the official closure of the parish of St. Philip Neri in Columbus. This day is a sad day, but also a day of celebration. Though masses have not been celebrated at the church for a number of years now, there is something very final and permanent about this liturgy. The cemetery will remain in our care; a plan is being put into place to build a chapel on the site of the original church with some elements of the present church for use during burials and yet, it is still hard to let go of what the parish once was to the people who attended the church. I know that we are not supposed to be attached to brick and mortar, but so often we are; we have to admit that. The closure of the building years ago was a painful reality that caused some people to stop going to mass or they switched to another parish. That too, is a reality that we need to admit is part of the mourning of the loss of a parish. In our celebration, we want to rejoice in the good of what took place at St. Philip Neri. We want to share stories, share in the Eucharist, share in a meal and to begin to move forward from the loss of this parish church and the dispersal of its members. We seek to take what was good about the parish and build on it to enhance our present community at Holy Family. Like any funeral, we can either wrap ourselves in the grief of what we believe we lost or we can celebrate what awaits us in the future. To rehash the past with no direction towards the future offers no path to growth; it leaves us heartbroken and distraught. Circumstances change and as a result things can not remain the same. The decision to close a parish is not an easy one and it should not be taken lightly. It should be more than just a money issue or a personnel problem. In the end though, one simple question must be asked; how does the Church respond to the needs of the faithful in an area? How do we provide for sacramental needs, giving proper availability to the Eucharist, enable the faithful to respond to their baptismal call, to evangelize and to provide for the proper formation of all who believe. That is why this is a celebration as well, because we have a path to a future. It is not simply about closing a building for the sake of it, but it is about the building of a new witness of faith that can grow, give life and help the Church build a powerful witness that will inspire new disciples for Christ. What we are building must be more than bricks and mortar which come and go, but a kingdom of God which will last forever. What we move on to is a building not located in one area but is unlimited in its scope to penetrate hearts and minds. The faithful gather for our common worship of God in a single location in Memphis, but the work of discipleship is the work of people faithfully living out the Good News. So we pray to St. Philip Neri to intercede for us that like him we can be faithful members of the Church and not just a parish. We ask for his intercession on our behalf as we work to build a renewed and regenerated church of living stones in this area. The memory of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church or Holy Rosary for that matter will not leave the memory of this local area for generations yet, but what must remain forever is the proclamation that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and all that we do must be for the everlasting glory of God. That would really make St. Philip Neri proud, even more than having a building named after him. My hope is that with this celebration healing can begin, unity can be attained and a better future can be established. Thank you to all those who helped to plan this celebration. Thank you to the priests and people who have faithfully served at St. Philip and Holy Rosary over the years. Thank you to all who have been such an important part of the history of the faith in this area. Thank you to all of you who now work together for the sake of the Kingdom under the patronage of the Holy Family. May God be praised, now and forever. Amen. Congratulations Fr. Mark On behalf of the faithful at St. Augustine and Holy Family, I want to congratulate Fr. Mark Livingston on his ordination to the priesthood. We thank him for his ministry among us during his time of formation. We all know that he will be a wonderful priest and the people he is called to serve will be fortunate to worship and minister with him. As Fr. Mark celebrates his masses of thanksgiving with us, let us promise to remember him and his classmates in our prayers. Congratulations again Fr. Mark and Ad Multos Annos. Memorial Day Mass at St. Michael Cemetery Just a reminder that the morning mass on Memorial Day will again be at 8:00 a.m. at St. Michael Cemetery Chapel. All are welcome to attend the mass, and since space is limited inside the chapel building, you are invited and encouraged to bring a lawn chair or folding chair to sit on. We are never sure of the weather for this event, so you may want to keep an eye out for the weather reports. Continued on Page 3

3 May 27, 2018 MALLIA S MOMENTS Continued from Page 1 Automatic Withdraw Giving Those who have in the past been giving through the automatic withdraw system at St. Augustine should have received a letter letting you know that we are no longer working with First State Bank and that you need to submit a new form. That form was included in last week s church paper and is included again this week for your convenience. This form is good for either of our two parishes and we urge you to think about this form of giving, especially if you go away for the weekends often or go to a warmer climate in the winter. For more information on how to sign up or to re-enroll please call Barb Quigley at the parish office. Kickball League Still Looking for players Even though the kickball league does not start until July 11th, we are still looking for players to form the teams. If you are between 18 and 35ish(?) you are free to sign up by simply ing me at frjoe.mallia@gmail.com. Everyone is welcome to play even if they are not a member of the parish or even if they do not go to church. Invite your family, friends, school mates, Facebook friends, twitter followers, Instagram buddies or the person down the street. The idea is to get people together and have fun. No athletic ability is required but you must be willing and wanting to have fun. Sounds like you? Then sign up today. Walk with Jesus on June 3rd. Please plan on attending the Walk with Jesus on Corpus Christi Sunday. Mass is at 6:30 am and the walk follows immediately after the mass. You can walk the whole way or only a part of the way. If you can't walk but want to be a part, a bus is there so you can get from one Page 3 parish to the other. We are in need of people to help in the actual procession. Please sign up today. If you have never done the walk before, I want to encourage you to take the opportunity this year. Festival Volunteers Needed You are still needed to help out at the celebrations at both parishes this year. The event at Holy Family is Father's Day weekend. Please return your raffle tickets as soon as possible and sign up to help in some small way. The festival at St. Augustine is the 10th, 11th and 12th of August. Raffle tickets will be going out soon and we are still in need of help to participate in all areas of the festival. You can sign up at church or on-line, but sign up today! Sometimes we forget how much the festival means to the parish in both getting people here and in raising money for the parish. Every bit helps. If you are not able to attend but would like to help, maybe you could sponsor the kids games or the beer tent for example. Forms for parishioner sponsorship will be in the church paper in the coming weeks. Find a way that you can help make our parish celebrations a great event. CSA If you have not yet returned your CSA form that was mailed to you, please take a moment to do so this week. I would really like to wrap this up in the next couple of weeks but we have not yet made our goal at either parish. We all saw how important it is to make our targets and to surpass them. To help you out, we will include a blank form at the end of my article each week. Please take a minute and fill it out this week and either mail it or drop it off at the office or put it in the collection basket at church. Thank you for your support. God bless and have a great week. Please check at which parish you are registered and fill out the personal information on the CSA pledge card below. Fill in your pledge and payment amount and place it in the collection basket or return to the parish office. Thank you. 10 Page 10 St. Augustine School May 27, 2018 St. Augustine Catholic School Like Us on Facebook Determination As the school year winds down, the students wind up. At least this is what I m seeing in Preschool. Spring is here and spring fever has spread. The children are more energetic, more chatty, and overall more playful. As teachers, we are using the last few weeks as creatively as possible. We want to squeeze in every last bit of information we can, touch on anything we missed or want to review, and hopefully present every last lesson the best way we can to keep the attention of our students with high spring fevers. We are determined to engage our students and finish the year strong. Through an interaction with one very clever little boy, I learned that the students are just as determined as their teachers are to finish strong. Our latest Preschool theme was studying the underwater world. We read books, drew pictures, and even created our own underwater mini-books where students colored sea creatures and even wrote the name of the creature in their very best Preschool handwriting. I thought a good wrap up lesson would be a collaborative mural where students could draw and color about what they had learned. At our morning meeting, we discussed what should or should not go on the mural does it live underwater how does it move can it breathe underwater etc. As students went into free choice, I expected to see an octopus, a seahorse, a sea star, a dolphin, a variety of fish, and many, many sharks (wow, do Preschoolers LOVE shark facts) added to our mural. As I was working with students, I noticed a little boy who usually spends most, if not all, of his free choice time with the racecars, the blocks, and the superheroes, sitting at the mural drawing quite intently. I walked over quietly so as not to disturb his work when I noticed his favorite superhero, Voltron, drawn right in the middle of the mural surrounded by fish and sharks. I m already thinking back to our morning meeting about what should or should not be included on the underwater mural and begin to ask him questions. Our conversation went something like this Wow, what a great drawing. Who did you add to the mural? Voltron. Does Voltron live underwater? No. Hmmm, remember our morning meeting when we talked about what lives underwater and how horses and dogs shouldn t be drawn on our mural because they can t breathe underwater? Yes. Can Voltron breathe underwater? No. Well. As I m forming my next question, the little boy reaches over me to grab a black marker and without a word draws a large black circle over Voltron s head with a smaller circle inside of it. He then looks at me with a gigantic smile and says two simple words Scuba Diver! Thank you to the new and returning Altar Servers who attended the latest training sessions at St. Augustine. Thank you for your dedication and assistance at our weekly masses, at funerals, and at weddings. A HUGE THANK YOU to our older, experienced altar servers for all your help. Training wouldn t be possible without your assistance! May God Bless you!! Therese Stier Congratulations Class of 2018 Thank you to those students who attended the graduation Mass on May 20, 2018 at St. Augustine. As Fr. Joe wrote in his article dated May 20th Pray each day, go to mass each week and remain grounded in the love of God....congratulations on your accomplishments and God bless you all. I sat there for a moment, then returned that gigantic smile he gave me and complimented his creativity. As he stayed to put the finishing touches on Voltron the Scuba Diver, I thought about how lucky I am to teach these young children and how lucky I am to learn from them as well. This little boy was determined to make Voltron a part of our mural and he did! He s only five in years, but he is 100% filled with determina on Mrs. Heather Ca vera Preschool Teacher
