FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora Happy Golden Jubilee Holy Name Church! What makes this 50 th year anniversary of the dedication of our church so special is the pastoral visit of our Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone. He will be with us this weekend from Saturday afternoon to Monday noon. Archbishop Cordileone was the Bishop of the Diocese of Oakland prior to his appointment as Archbishop of San Francisco. I remember asking for his name when he was still new in Oakland and somebody told me that it was easy to remember his name recalling the Heart of the Lion - Cor-di-leone. His first name is even easier to remember when you think of Christ as our Savior Salvatore. What a beautiful name carried by a wonderful person, the chief pastor of our Archdiocese! May the visit of our Archbishop bring us closer to Christ, our Savior. This weekend is, indeed, a grace-filled occasion. I couldn t help but be reminded of a story about a little boy named Timmy who was excited to meet a bishop visiting from another country who was staying at their house. The bishop arrived late in the evening, well past Timmy s bedtime, but the next morning the boy asked his father if he would be allowed to meet the important guest. His father thought about this and decided to let Timmy take the bishop his tea and wake him up. The following instructions were issued: "First, knock on the door of the bishop's room and then say to him: 'It's the boy, my Lord, it's time to get up.'" Timmy rehearsed his lines, repeating them over and over. Finally the tea was ready and he picked up the tray and headed for the bishop's room. A few minutes later, the bishop, still in his pajamas, was seen running out the door and down the lane. The father turned to his son and said: "What happened?" "I'm sorry," said Timmy. "I was so nervous I messed up my lines. I knocked on the door and said: 'It's the Lord, my boy, your time is up!'" There was once a butterfly that landed on my shoulder. After a while it flew away, but it left a colorful dust on my shoulder. Then I realize, friends are like butterflies, they come and go but one thing is for sure - they will surely leave a colorful mark on our lives. Thanks for being one of those BUTTERFLIES in my life. Surely, the pastoral visit of our Archbishop on the occasion of the 50 th anniversary of our Church will surely leave a colorful dust on our shoulders. After all the festivities and rejoicing, we journey back to our Lenten preparation leading us to the holiest of weeks. On this 5 th and final Sunday of Lent, remember: L-E-N-T I-S the time to be S-I-L-E-N-T and L-I-S-T-E-N! Listen to God and enjoy a silent life! His perfect plans for us will happen. The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: To whom is Gaudium et Spes written for? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: Hence this Second Vatican Council, having probed more profoundly into the mystery of the Church, now addresses itself without hesitation, not only to the sons of the Church and to all who invoke the name of Christ, but to the whole of humanity. For the council yearns to explain to everyone how it conceives of the presence and activity of the Church in the world of today. Question: Why does the Church address the modern world? Answer from Gaudium et Spes: To carry out such a task, the Church has always had the duty of scrutinizing the signs of the times and of interpreting them in the light of the Gospel. Thus, in language intelligible to each generation, she can respond to the perennial questions which men ask about this present life and the life to come, and about the relationship of the one to the other. Never has the human race enjoyed such an abundance of wealth, resources and economic power, and yet a huge proportion of the world s citizens are still tormented by hunger and poverty, while countless numbers suffer from total illiteracy. Never before has man had so keen an understanding of freedom, yet at the same time new forms of social and psychological slavery make their appearance. Although the world of today has a very vivid awareness of its unity and of how one man depends on another in needful solidarity, it is most grievously torn into opposing camps by conflicting forces. For political, social, economic, racial and ideological disputes still continue bitterly, and with them the peril of a war which would reduce everything to ashes. True, there is a growing exchange of ideas, but the very words by which key concepts are expressed take on quite different meanings in diverse ideological systems. Finally, man painstakingly searches for a better world, without a corresponding spiritual advancement. Editor s Note: Gaudium et Spes (the Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World) presents an overview of the Catholic Church's teachings regarding humanity's relationship to society, with special emphasis on economics, poverty, social justice, culture, science, technology and ecumenism. LIFE FROM DEATH Lent is about Easter, and Easter is about life after death. As we draw closer to Easter, the Sunday readings become more and more explicit about this. In a rather dry, matter-of-fact way, today s reading from St. Paul s Letter to the Romans teaches that our mortal bodies will be raised to life. But in a far more gripping way, the Lord shouts at us through the prophet Ezekiel, O my people, I will open your graves... I will put my spirit in you... I have promised, and I will do it. When Jesus saw the people weeping over the death of Lazarus, he was troubled in spirit and moved by the deepest emotions. Approaching the tomb, Jesus himself began to weep. He loved Lazarus. In fact, Jesus loved Lazarus so much that he snatched him out of his tomb, back to life. That s how God loves us.
