Fourth Sunday of Lent March 18, 2012 God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. John 3:17 MASS INTENTIONS WEEK of March 18, 2012 TODAY S READINGS First Reading The wrath and the mercy of the LORD are revealed in the exile and liberation of the Chosen People (2 Chronicles 36:14-16, 19-23) or 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a. Psalm Let my tongue be silenced, if I ever forget you! (Psalm 137) or Psalm 23. Second Reading God, who is rich in mercy, brought us to life with Christ (Ephesians 2:4-10) or Ephesians 5:8-14. Gospel The Son of Man must be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life (John 3:14-21) or John 9:1-41 [1, 6-9, 13-17, 34-38]. The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: 2 Sm 7:4-5a, 12-14a, 16; Rom 4:13, 16-18, 22; Mt 1:16, 18-21, 24a or Lk 2:41-51a Tuesday: Ez 47:1-9, 12; Jn 5:1-16 Wednesday: Is 49:8-15; Jn 5:17-30 Thursday: Ex 32:7-14; Jn 5:31-47 Friday: Wis 2:1a, 12-22; Jn 7:1-2, 10, 25-30 Saturday: Jer 11:18-20; Jn 7:40-53 Sunday: Jer 31:31-34; Ps 51; Heb 5:7-9; Jn 12:20-33 Alternate readings (Year A): Ez 37:12-14; Ps 130; Rom 8:8-11; Jn 11:1-45 [3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45] Over the years, our tradition has come to see this Sunday as a transition, a midpoint, an oasis in the middle of six long weeks of preparation for Easter. The key is the Latin word Laetare, or Rejoice, which was for centuries the first word sung in the Mass for this Sunday. In southern Europe, the first roses of springtime are appearing now, and there used to be a custom of honoring those to be baptized at Easter with roses on this Sunday. Long ago, this was also seen as a day for celebrating the ordination of priests. Many parishes retain the custom of using rose-colored vestments on this day. Normally flowers are banned from worship in the restrained season of Lent, but here, midway, these signposts of festivity pointing to the renewal of Easter springtime sometimes make a quiet appearance. A project for today would be to plant a few paperwhite or narcissus bulbs in a water bowl filled with river rocks. Like those elect who will soon be bathed in baptismal waters, they will come to full stature in the Easter season. James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. Arnold Zamora Rain! Rain! Rain! Oh, No! Oh, Yes! When you know that it s going to rain today or in the next few days, what is your reaction? My initial reaction this week was Oh, no! And I bet that s the common reaction. Why is that we seem to dread the rain? For one thing we don t want to get ourselves, our clothes and our grocery and shopping bags wet. Rain makes it hard for us to get out and do our simple errands. We have to cancel outdoor games and BBQ parties. We don t want to deal with slippery roads and driving with impaired vision. We really don t feel like going out on a rainy day. So, we can certainly expect this natural reaction: Oh, no! But our Oh no can turn into Oh yes, when we think of the many benefits of having rain. I said, Oh yes, when I knew I didn t need to water the grass in our One Body Statue or the plants and flowers in our rectory s garden. I said, Oh yes Free car wash! Oh, yes, I could do some household chores. I have to change my perspective of looking at the rain. I try now to look more on the Oh yes of having rain than the Oh no. Instead of saying Oh no, the church roof, walls and ceiling will be leaking again. I said, Oh yes, now we can see if our current repairs really work. So before you stare at the rain with dismay, look at your garden or your neighbor s garden and think about how delicious those home grown tomatoes and cucumbers are going to be this summer. Think about how beautiful the spring blooms will be on the flowers and trees. Realize that without the rain, we would not have nature s beautiful surroundings. Without rain, there can be no rainbow. Think upon the fun things you can do inside. Raindrops are not teardrops from heaven but graces and blessings outpoured by our generous God. I am reminded of a story of small town that did not have rain for a very long time. Concerned of the drought that the people were facing, the priest of a church asked all the people to gather in the field to pray for rain. People came from everywhere. The priest started by saying, we are praying for rain today but where are your umbrellas? A ten-year old boy told this story. One bright sunny April day, two blondes were walking into Wal-Mart. They knew it might rain later in the month so they bought an umbrella. They bought some other things too. Then they checked out the stuff they bought. On the way out one of the blondes noticed it was raining. She said, Well, we didn t bring our raincoats, so I guess we need to use the new umbrella. The other one said, No, don t! You re gonna get it wet! Don t let the rain stop you from going to church. Use an umbrella or wear a raincoat. HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold, Silver or Bronze. Please send engraving request with check payment (payable to Holy Name Parish) or drop by the church office, 1555 39th Ave. San Francisco, CA 94122. For more information, please call (415) 664-8590. Page 3 4th Sunday of Lent March 18, 2012
