Get the picture, is the phrase the late great announcer of the Georgia Bulldogs, Larry Munson, would say before every kickoff. He would describe where each team was lined up, the color of the uniforms, where the Sun was in the sky and what the crowd was wearing. He would set the stage for each game this way. So let s Get the picture with the Church year. Today is the 33 rd Sunday in Ordinary Time. The Church year is running to a close. The final Sunday of the year is next week, the Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ the King of the Universe. The first Sunday of Advent is November 29 and marks the beginning of new Church Year. We will take out our Advent wreaths and experience the violet and rose colors of Advent. In essence we have all completed another year. This is a good time to take stock. We have enjoyed another trip around the Sun. How has this year been for you? We could all analyze this year in many ways but I think the essential question is have I grown closer to the Lord Jesus this year? This past year might have been a year of challenges and suffering and yet you found you grew closer to the Lord. On the other hand it could have been a year of prosperity or personal advances and yet you feel you did not grow closer to the Lord. One of the reasons we have embarked on a Parish book study is that it is a mini-retreat and it can give us a means of assessing our journey. Yes, there are thousands of ways to assess our journey but The Four Signs of a Dynamic Catholic gives us four benchmarks: prayer, study, generosity and evangelization. PRAYER: How is my prayer life? Do I have a daily commitment to personal time with Jesus? It could be thru Scripture reading, the Rosary, a spiritual book or devotional. Do I take some quiet personal time with the Lord each day? Am I a person of gratitude? Do I thank God for His gifts every day? STUDY: The average Catholic read one Catholic book last year. If the main purpose of my life is to grow in relationship with my Lord and Savior what am I doing to fuel that relationship? Do I read Catholic books or listen to Catholic radio, CDs or podcasts? GENEROSITY: Do I see myself as a steward? That is, every gift I have is on loan from God. How do I use my time, talent and treasure? Am I a generous person? EVANGELIZATION: If Jesus Christ is the greatest relationship in my life am I sharing the Good News? Did I invite someone to RCIA this year? Do I invite people to Mass or parish functions? Do I share about the Scriptures I am reading or the books I am reading? Very often we share, with great excitement, about movies we have seen or books that we have read. Do we share about what is most important in our lives? I hope the book has challenged you. If you have not started it is not too late! There are copies by the front door of the church. As we complete another year let us take some time this week to get the picture. We thank God for the Church Year 2015 and we look forward to a new Church Year that Pope Francis has proclaimed a Year of Mercy. May Jesus Christ be praised, now and forever! -Fr. Tim McKeown Flowers were donated in memory of Rita Guerin.
