2 Who is my neighbor? This weekend across the Diocese of Savannah we kick off the 2019 Bishop s Annual Appeal. The theme this year is Who is my neighbor? which comes from the parable of the Good Samaritan. Jesus tells a scholar of the law that the greatest command is, You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. When the scholar asks, And who is my neighbor? Jesus responds with the parable of the Good Samaritan: Jesus replied, A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off leaving him half-dead. A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight. He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him. The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, Take care of him. If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back. Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers victim? He answered, The one who treated him with mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise. Bishop Hartmayer asks us to reflect on who our neighbor is and how we can help them. We have certainly been blessed by the seminarians and priests the bishop has sent us. As seminarians we hosted Tony Visintainer (now in a Benedictine Monastery in Alabama), Chris Hassel (now ordained a priest and serving us), Robert Phillips (now ordained a deacon and serving a pastoral year with us), and Deacon Patrick May (scheduled to be ordained a priest this spring). We are blessed by having two permanent deacons (Deacon Maasha and Deacon Guyer) and by having two men in the diaconate program (Terry Mermann and Chris Sadowski). In his video presentation he notes how our giving supports ministry with migrant farm workers, campus ministry, Catholic charities throughout the diocese and many other of our neighbors. Let us take some time this week and pray about how we can assist our neighbor. May our gift be a response to Jesus' call to, Love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your being, with all your strength, and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself. Please make sure to write your check to Diocese of Savannah with St. Francis Xavier Church in the memo line so we get credit. No gift is too small! He saw the discouraged; He encouraged them. He saw the dying; He gave them new life. He gave. In this way, He taught us to give. 4 Active Parishioner Status We receive many requests for weddings, to be Godparents, sponsors for Confirmation and to the rightfully enjoy other services offered here at St Francis Xavier Church. The Council of Catholic Women s annual International Food Tasters Festival is scheduled for March 2, Ladies who love to cook are invited to join us to share their delicious food during the event. The Wednesday morning session begins at 11 a.m. in the Church Office and the evening session begins at 6 p.m. in St. Anne s Room in Xavier Hall.

5 School and Youth News Teens in the Spirit meets every Wednesday from 5-7 p.m. with Mass to follow. PARISH SCHOOL OF RELI- GION (PSR): PSR meets Sunday Mornings during the academic school year, 9:30 10:40am, for children Pre- K - 8 th Grade. If you have not registered yet, please come over to the school and we will help you get your child registered for this new year. Call Deacon Larry- DRE , X14. January 28 to February 1 is Catholic Schools Week. We will be celebrating at the school, church and throughout the community. February 1 is Grandparents and Grand-friends day. This day includes a school tour and mass. We hope you can join us. January 27, from 2-4 P.M. and Wednesday, February 6 from 8:30-10:30 A.M. we will be holding school Open Houses. All are welcome and please help us by inviting families you know to come to SFX for our either open house event.
