The Etymology of mercy is from misericordis which means opening one s heart to wretchedness (Name 8). Jesus told St. Faustina, Mankind will not have peace until it turns with trust to My mercy My heart rejoices in this title of Mercy. Proclaim that mercy is the greatest attribute of God. All the works of my hand are crowned with mercy (Divine Mercy Diary #301). Let us imagine a blazing hot furnace, with flames leaping out of it. This furnace burns 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This is an apt image for the love of God for you. The heart of God is on fire with love for you. RECEIVE MERCY How does our heavenly Father see the world? No doubt He looks down each day and sees our beauty and unique nature but he also sees our woundedness and brokenness and He has mercy on us. The Father is rich in mercy (Eph. 2:4). God reveals himself to Moses as a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness (Ex. 34:6). The motto for this year is Merciful like the Father. One way God expresses his mercy is in forgiveness. Pope Francis is fond of saying, The Lord never tires of forgiving: never! It is we who tire of asking him for forgiveness. We need to ask for the grace not to get tired of asking for forgiveness, because he never gets tired of forgiving (Name xi). Certainly this was incarnated in Jesus. As Jesus walked this earth how many times did the Evangelists record, His heart was moved with pity for them? (Think of a scene like the widow of Naim, the feeding of the 5,000, the Gadarene demoniac. Think of parables like the Prodigal Son, the Good Samaritan, and the Good Shepherd). God has compassion on us. Jesus could look at a situation and see the deepest need of the person in front of him. This is mercy. SHARE MERCY Remember the ruthless servant of Matthew 18? The servant owes the King a huge amount perhaps several years worth of wages. He is forgiven all! But when he sees a fellow worker who owes him a small amount he has him thrown into prison. May we not be like that! We are called to show mercy because mercy has been given to us. How can we receive mercy and fail to share it with others? Corporal works of mercy. Harbor the homeless, feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked, visit the sick, ransom the captive, and bury the dead. Spiritual works of mercy: Comfort the afflicted, instruct the ignorant, counsel the doubtful, admonish the sinner, bear wrongs patiently, forgive offenses willingly, and pray for the living and the dead. How can these be part of my life and the lives of our families in the year ahead? There are seven of each. We have nine months of the Year of Mercy in front of us. How about focusing on one corporal work of mercy and one spiritual work of mercy each month for the coming nine months? I want to share an image that I use for Confession. Imagine going out to the beach at Tybee, a remote spot, perhaps somewhere on North Beach. You go out at low tide, take a stick and write in the sand all the sins you have ever committed from your youth. You think of your sins of commission and then your sins of omission. You are surprised with the section of the beach you cover. You leave and go away. The tide turns and comes in. You come back the next morning and the sand is clean and replenished. All of the sins are washed away. That is mercy. That is the love of God for us. As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our sins from us (Psalm 103:12). -Fr. Tim McKeown Financial News Collections for Feb. 20th & 21th $ 9, Thank you for your sacrificial donation!

Christians in the Middle East The Knights of Columbus is asking those considering a Lenten sacrifice to give 40 Bucks for Lent to help Middle Eastern Christians and other religious minorities suffering religious persecution there. The Knights began its Christian Refugee Relief Fund in To date nearly $10 million has been raised to provide housing, food, medical aid, education and general relief to persecuted Christians and other religious minorities especially from Iraq and Syria, and to raise awareness about their plight. Those persecuted have suffered enormously at the hands of terrorists, who target them simply for their faith. Lives have been turned upside down, friends and families killed, and homes seized. These donations can be made to the Christian Refugee Relief Fund at christiansatrisk.org, or by sending checks or money orders (payable to Knights of Columbus Charities ) to P.O. Box 1966, New Haven, CT The memo portion should indicate that the check is for Christian Refugee Relief. The 84 th Annual K of C Charity Oyster Roast will be March 5 th at the Knights Hall.
