If you are looking for something to do this Lenten season join us in our fight to stop abortion. A group of Knights and and parishioners will be praying each Tuesday during Lent in front of the abortion clinic at 2nd and Market. Some will be leaving after daily 8:15am Mass and carpooling downtown. Our council and Parish is committed to the 10:00am/11:00am hour but other parishes in Diocese will be there 24/7 during the 40 days, so if you cannot make our time, feel free to go any day at any time. BELIEVE ME IT'S MORE REWARDING THAN GIVING UP CHIPS OR CANDY! Please join us or go when you can. For more information contact Larry Kessler 615-945-1384, lkes648004@aol.com.

PAGE 2 VOLUME 18, ISSUE 3 Brother Knights, Grand Knight s Letter The weather is changing! Over the past months we have seen cold snaps of weather with temperatures in the single digits. Wind, blowing snow, ice and sleet all made up our weeks and months of this winter season. This past week we have seen a change to the weather. Moderate temperatures above freezing to 80 s in the month of February that set new record highs. We too are like the changes in weather. I find myself cold and more removed from my relationship with God during times of darkness. As a brother Knight I appreciate the support that all brother Knights share with each other. This is our gift from each other. With some recent family health issues I missed a lot of connectivity to our brother Knights but my record temperatures are and have been knowing that many of you have prayed for the healing of my Mom after her bypass surgery. My cold was losing my Dad this past May, and then adding this bypass surgery just over seven months later. For me the weather was cold. How could God allow this to happen to both of my parents while we are still grieving the loss of my Dad? Well I now realize that God has spared my Mom and although his plan may not be as easy to see in my mind, I have to have faith that spring is coming. Not just the physical weather but the emotional and liturgical weather. Lent is a time at least for me that I have my personal seasonal change. I have always done more vs giving up things for lent and that warms me up. So this lent season I feel we are all called to set new record temperatures. Be nicer to your family, friends and brother Knights. After being gone a lot for the past month I have seen so many acts of kindness from Brother Knights that my heart is warm. I thank you all and you know who you are. So we can share these blessings and find another Catholic Gentleman to share your good Knight stories. Warm up a new recruit and prepare them for our coming founders day recruitment drive in March. Share the good news, the record temperatures by sharing the good deeds Knights do in Charity, Unity and Fraternity in the following of Fr McGivney. Also, please get involved in one of the many upcoming activities that we do as Knights. I am proud to be called a Knight. Vivat Jesus. Best to you all on your lent journey and God bless. VOLUME 18, ISSUE 3 Bishop Flaget Flyer Plan for this Tax Day and into the Future PAGE 3 Now is a good time to begin preparing for April 18 (tax day). It s become popular this time of year to encourage the opening of an IRA or similar retirement annuity, or the depositing of additional funds into an existing account, as a tax-savings vehicle. Or perhaps someone has tried to convince you to open an account, touting the rate of interest that money in one of these accounts can earn. Let me join the chorus of folks encouraging you to open or add funds to an annuity, but for a different reason. Certainly, contributing money to a Knights of Columbus annuity will allow you to save some money on your income tax return. And, our annuities do pay a very competitive interest rate, consistent with our primary goal of absolute safety of principal. Opening or adding to an annuity for these reasons, however, strikes me as taking a short-term view of a product that is designed to provide long-term security. How much security? How does retirement income that you cannot outlive guaranteed sound to you? Here at the Knights of Columbus, you can open a retirement annuity for as little as $300. Consistent and disciplined savings placed into that annuity over time can guarantee you an income at retirement that you cannot outlive. That guarantee along with the fact that no one has ever lost money left in a Knights of Columbus annuity (remember absolute safety of principal) really will provide you with peace of mind. I am happy to meet with you, at your convenience and in your home, to explain in detail the benefits of opening a Knights of Columbus annuity. PAGE 4 Bishop Flaget Flyer VOLUME 18, ISSUE 3 Water With Blessing Bishop Flaget Council will be hosting a fund raising concert for Water With Blessing in an effort to stamp out Cholera in Haiti by providing them with clean drinking water through a filtration process. To date our Council has purchased over 86 units. Each unit provides clean drinking water for four families for life. That is 344 families who now have clean, safe drinking water. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL OF YOU FOR AN AMAZING RESPONSE. More will come on the concert but our tentative date is Friday, June 22. Larry Kessler, 615-945-1384 Bless Me Father For I Have Sinned Those seven words bless me Father for I have sinned trigger a variety of responses from Catholics. While not mandatory but certainly customary, these are usually the first words from a penitent in celebrating the sacrament of Reconciliation. The declaration I have sinned is an admission of responsibility from the penitent. It is also the stumbling block for many as they contemplate whether to engage the priest in the act of confession. For many decades prior to the Second Vatican Council, weekly Confession was a standard practice for adult Catholics. I remember as a child in Catholic grade school going to Confession at least every other week. The process involved an examination of conscience (it still does) and a declaration of one s sins. As a child, it was hard to remember them all or even very many of them. Even as an adult, who can possibly remember all their sins? Many adults simply stopped going to Confession altogether. Some decided that their sins really weren t that bad or maybe not even a sin in the first place. Others mistakenly believed that by trying to be a good person they could avoid Confession altogether by attending Mass regularly. Ultimately, the habit of regular examination of conscience and sacramental confession of sin was lost. Lent is an invitation to start a new habit regular celebration of the sacrament of Reconciliation. This habit begins with a reformulation of our notion of Sin and our sins. Rather than thinking of each individual instance of omission or commission (again who can possibly remember it all) it is better to think of participation in evil. All sin is participation in evil. Evil is an objective reality in the created world. Evil cannot be totally avoided and because of our humanity, we are tempted by Satan (who is real) and we succumb to sin when we act on Satan s temptations. Our individual acts (those we remember and those we don t) are participation in evil. This is sin! Our admission of wrongdoing and our declaration to try to avoid it in the future is our role in the sacrament. The priest, in the person of Jesus Christ, declares I absolve you of ALL your sins and offers a penitential act that moves us toward grace. Every absolved penitent emerges from the confessional with a spotless soul just as when we were baptized. The sacrament of Reconciliation is needed today as it was needed yesterday and will still be needed tomorrow. What a gift! Lent is a great opportunity to begin new habits. Consider making regular use of the sacrament of Reconciliation as a new habit worth cultivating for the rest of your life.
