FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It s Holy Week once again! It starts with Palm Sunday, this weekend. We commemorate Jesus entrance to Jerusalem as the people waved palm branches to welcome him. It is a day to welcome him most closely in our hearts. It is not the start of a vacation or a relaxation, if you think of Palm Sunday as going to Palm Beach or Palm Springs. It is journeying with Jesus to his joyful entrance to Jerusalem, leading to his sorrowful crucifixion and death at Calvary and culminating to his glorious resurrection at Easter. Palm Sunday is the start of a week of intimacy with our God. Usually you hold the palm branches in your hands and in a particular way using your palm. Holding the palms in your palm. The palm of our hands is a means for intimacy. When someone or something touches your hand, it means the object is so close to you. That s why God holds us in the palm of his hands. The prophet Isaiah mentioned that God has carved our names in the palm of His hands. This week Christ expressed his desire for intimacy with us by showing his love for us through his passion and death. That s why this Sunday is also called Passion Sunday. Commemorating Palm Sunday must never be reduced to mere waving and blessing of palm branches. Palm Sunday must highlight the Lord s Passion not just his suffering but his loving action so we can rise with him to a new life. This week let us also express our desire to be intimate with Jesus by joining in our parish activities. This Wednesday we have a penance service at 7:00 PM to better prepare our hearts for our intimacy with the Lord. Holy Thursday Mass at 7:30 PM is the celebration of the Lord s Supper and the washing of feet. Our Good Friday services this year, unlike the previous years, will start at 1:00 PM with Stations of the Cross led by our School Students, then followed with the reflection of the seven last words by selected parishioners. At 3:00 PM will be the Liturgy of the Word and Adoration of the Holy Cross. Easter Vigil this year starts at 8:30 PM. There s so much happening at the Easter Vigil Services like the blessing of the fire, the Easter candle and water and much more. See the poster and bulletin for our Holy Week schedule. Somebody asked: How do you make holy water? Answer: Get ordinary water and just boil the hell out of it. But seriously come to our Easter services so you will know we make holy water and be intimate with our God. Life feels good when somebody s THERE. It feels better when somebody SHARES. It feels best when somebody CARES. God bless you always and have a blessed Holy Week. THE CROSS We should glory in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ,in whom is our salvation, life and resurrection, through whom we are saved and delivered. HOLY NAME LADIES AID COLLECTION Today, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes will be by the exits. HOLY LAND GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION Every year on Good Friday, a collection is taken up in every Catholic church to support the people and places of the Holy Land. Christians of the Holy Land rely heavily on the help that comes to them during this special moment of the year. The collection is regulated by specific pontifical provisions that primarily allocate funds to the Holy Land Franciscans who are responsible for the maintenance of the different shrines at the holy places. They are also responsible for the pastoral, educational, welfare, healthcare and social structures that help improve the life of the parishes and of the various ecclesial bodies, so that these communities can be a safeguard of the Gospel. The money raised will go to the completion of urgent restorations, such as the renovation of the roof of the Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and over several years, it will go to support projects that provide housing to young families so that they can remain in the Holy Land. But that is not all: the collection will go toward implementing a comprehensive school network, especially through the parishes, fostering a widespread level of quality education. Special attention will be given to possible emergencies and in 2014, and as in years past, the priority is Syria, stricken by a war that is sadly in its third year. The Catholic communities of the Holy Land through the Good Friday Collection will receive support to be close to the poor and suffering without any distinction of creed or ethnicity. The parishes will keep their doors open to every need, as will well as schools, where Christians and Muslims are preparing for a future of respect and collaboration. Hospitals and clinics, hospices and community centers will continue to offer their assistance. So on Good Friday please help support his critical mission of keeping Christianity alive in the Holy Land. During this upcoming Holy Week, we might be busy about many things preparing for family visits, shopping for the Easter ham, picking out the perfect Easter dress or suit for our child. Life can be full, and that s very good. But make some room in your life during this holiest of weeks for kenosis for emptiness and for remembering our empty Savior and all he did for us. With Jesus as our model, how might we empty ourselves for the sake of others?
