November 28, 2010 First Sunday of Advent Let us come rejoicing into the Lord s presence today as we begin this Advent Season. Jesus exhorts us to stay awake, and so this Advent let us listen more closely to God s word in order to prepare ourselves for God s coming into our hearts. Even as we hear scriptures that prepare us for God s coming at the end of time, the best way to get ready for the final coming is to be ready for God s coming into our lives every day. FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora It is a New Year in the Church. Happy New Year! We begin another liturgical year. As always, we start it with the Advent Season. The word advent is taken from the Latin word, adventus, which means arrival or coming. However, the main event is yet four weeks away, when we commemorate the Lord s Birth. Or the main event perhaps, is who-knowshow-many-years away, when the Lord comes at the end of the world. Advent celebrates both events- the Lord s initial coming in humble humanity and his final coming in glory. Meanwhile the perennial theme of our life is Waiting. Advent is not only a matter of us waiting for the Lord; it is also a matter of the Lord waiting for us. But between His first coming and His final return, we meet the Lord in the Eucharist and in one another, even as we wait for Him. When we meet Him in the Eucharist and in one another and not stand idle, but allow His love to work in and through us, it is a time of grace. It is kairos. That is what Christmas is all about, is it not? A time of grace-made-flesh: kairos. And it is kairos that makes every liturgical year happy and blessed. Here s my ADVENT alphabet for you. A stands for Atonement. It s a time to atone for our sins. Break up the word atone it s a time to be atone with our God and to be at-one with each other. D stands for Detachment. Advent is the time to detach ourselves from whatever that hinders us from welcoming our Lord. It is a time to attach ourselves to Jesus. V stands for Vigilance! The Gospel encourages us to be watchful, to stay awake. Get ready, for you do not know the hour or the day when the thief comes. We are waiting for God s coming. We must prepare ourselves, not because we fear him, but because we love him. E stands for Expectancy. It s a sense of eagerness to meet the Lord. Advent is a time to be excited, for we are sure that Christ is going to come and he is the reason for the season. N stands for New Life. Christ coming brings new life to us. Christ gives new meaning to our life. Christ comes to renew the face of the earth and we are reborn to everlasting life. T stands for Thanksgiving. Thank God for the gift of His Son and the new life we have through him. Advent is a season to thank God for the year that we have and the year to come. HOLY NAME OF JESUS TREE OF LIFE PROJECT To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church s 85th Anniversary, a Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a muchneeded Capital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). We are confident that the funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for some of the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. The Holy Name Tree of Life was unveiled October 10, 2010 at the 85th Anniversary Mass and Pastor s Installation presided by Most Rev. Robert McElroy. Good News! November 28, 2010 FIRST SUNDAY OF ADVENT Is 2:1 5 / Rom 13:11 14 / Mt 24:37 44 Greetings! Though we may never meet in person, I feel deeply connected to you through our sharing in the Word. Thank you for the privilege of accompanying you as we seek to follow Jesus. The wreath? The violet vestments? O Come Emmanuel? Already?! Though Christmas decorations start creeping into stores before Halloween, Advent often sneaks up on us. In our busy lives, it s easy to leap ahead to Christmas without really observing this sacred season of waiting yet celebrating Advent doesn t have to be just one more item on our December to-do list. Today we hear Jesus admonition to his followers to stay awake and be prepared for the coming of the Lord. He doesn t give a list of things to buy; he doesn t suggest a rigorous spiritual retreat; he doesn t give specific instructions. Just stay awake. Be aware. Be conscious of God s bursting forth into the world. It isn t hard. As we write Christmas cards, we can pray for those receiving our greetings and for those to whom we no longer write, whether because we ve grown apart or because of a long-held grudge. As we decorate, we can thank God for the gifts that make our lives more beautiful. As we prepare food for family gatherings, we can reflect on the nourishment we receive in the Eucharist. A friend of mine once referred to Advent as the 27 stopping days before Christmas. In the midst of shopping, decorating, and baking, we are called to stop to stay awake to God s movement in our lives. This isn t just one more item on our list of things to do. It s a new way to do our lives. Janel Esker sundaybulletins@liguori.org JESUS IS THE REASON In today s world the Christmas season starts on the day after Thanksgiving and ends on December 25. For many of us this time is filled with baking, sending cards, choosing gifts, attending parties, and setting up a Christmas tree and decorations. Add to this our daily work schedules and the needs of our children and this time of the year can be very stressful. The Church puts a different emphasis on the next four weeks. This is Advent, the season of expectation, with scripture readings and prayers calling on us to prepare in our hearts and lives for the Lord s coming on Christmas Day. According to our heritage, we may already have Advent customs such as the lighting of candles on the Advent wreath, a Jesse tree, setting up a manger scene ready for the Christ child at Christmas, or special devotions. An Advent tradition from Germany called Kristkindl (meaning Christ child ) is suitable for families, small church groups, or even for individuals. The original custom was for the mother of the house to pass a bowl around the family circle containing rolled-up slips of paper with a family member s name on each one. Each would take one slip and carefully looked at the name so no one else could see it. For the rest of Advent the person named on the paper became the Kristkindl of the person who took the slip of paper, and he or she would do at least one good deed a day for them, but without them finding out who did it! Even young children could do this. It became a treasured way of preparing hearts to serve Christ through serving other people. Honor Jesus in the person of your Kristkindl: pray for them, save money to send to a good cause in their name, donate gifts to a shelter, do extra chores unasked, adopt a needy family.
