Psalm Be with me, Lord, when I am in trouble (Psalm 91). Second Reading All who express faith in the risen Christ and confess that he is Lord will be saved (Romans 10:8-13). Gospel Jesus was led into the desert by the Spirit and was tempted (Luke 4:1-13). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from the Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 am - 4:00 pm Closed for lunch 12:00-1:00 pm; Friday 8:00 am-12 Noon pm JESUS AND THE DEVIL The devil tempted Jesus by quoting scripture, as today s Gospel reminds us. Try a self-serving miracle. Try selling out. Try dazzling the audience; people are gullible, after all. Try all these easy ways. The tempter tries to urge Jesus onto the slippery slope, attempts the old soft-soap, the snake-oil solutions that are always readily at hand. The devil knows better, but is powerless to do better, much less be better. The devil is evil personified, who senses in Jesus the stronger, truly attractive presence of holiness. Evil is exposed and engaged, we are reminded in this Sunday s Gospel. Evil knows the jig is up. The undoing of lies begins with Jesus, who takes up the work of soul-healing and world-healing. This Lent, the Church invites us to enter into this renewing, re-creative work and be made whole again. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Have you noticed anything different about our bulletin this week? (see answer below) So, Lent has begun! And, Lent 2016 should be very special as it also coincides with the final six weeks of our Capital Campaign: Building God s House, Our Home. If this campaign is to be a success (and the initial results are very promising!), I need to continue to be the cheerleader for the team this team called the Community of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. By this time, all of you should have received a Capital Campaign packet in the mail or at one of our Orientation or Training Meetings for the Campaign Cabinet and Campaign Committee. Take note of these two important notices: 1. If you have not yet received ANY information vis-à-vis our Capital Campaign in person or by mail, please notify the office immediately. There could be several reasons for this: a) you are not registered in the parish; b) we have your wrong mailing address; or c) we made some mistake! 2. If you received a Capital Campaign packet in the mail, but it did NOT contain a Pledge Form, please notify the office immediately. There could be several reasons for this as well: a) you were supposed to be contacted by a member of our parish for a personal session about your pledge; that volunteer parishioner has your Pledge Form. Your letter should have said that a volunteer will contact you. If the volunteer has made contact with you and you have not responded, please do so ASAP; if the volunteer has not made ANY contact with you by phone, e-mail or U.S. Mail, please call the office immediately so that we can get a Pledge Form to your; or b) we made a mistake and forgot to enclose the pledge form Your letter should have said that your Pledge Form is enclosed. Again, our initial response has been tremendous: $2,400,000.00 from 155 parishioners. We still need to hear from the remaining 2,300+ parishioners. Please join the team. Now, since I got a Letterman Jacket for Christmas, maybe I should be the Quarterback instead of Cheerleader! Speaking of quarterbacks, congrats to Peyton Manning and the Broncos and the Broncos fans! In the spirit of Lent, I confess that I was wrong and backed the wrong team (who were they? oh yes, the Panthers); please forgive me! Happy Valentine s Day! May you share LOVE and receive LOVE today, tomorrow and always. I am so very blessed in the love and support I receive from so many of you, our parishioners. ANSWER: Our bulletin has added two more pages and thus has expanded to 12 pages total: 10 pages of parish news and 2 pages of ads. Enjoy every word. By the way, be sure to read the ads in our bulletin; those who advertise in the bulletin allow the bulletin to be printed and shipped free of cost to us. Thanks so much to these generous sponsors! In fact, if you read the ads carefully, some are supporting the Capital Campaign and the parish in general by giving back to the parish a portion or percentage of their income which has come from Holy Spirit parishioners. Have a great week. Try to attend this Lenten Friday s activity: a Lenten Concert. See details in top right panel on page 5. Sponsor couples needed for Holy Spirit Marriage Prep Program Holy Spirit s For Better And Forever Marriage Preparation program is in need of several more Sponsor couples. Sponsor couples are married couples trained to journey with engaged couples as they prepare for lifelong commitment of marriage. Sponsor couples provide for the engaged a working example of a married couple doing lifelong marriage. A couple who is trained to serve as a sponsor couple must acknowledge that their life experience of living lifelong marriage is the primary experience they bring to the task of sponsorship. Their training is mostly about clarifying the limits of their role and some tips on how to interact with engaged couples as adults. If you would like to learn more about how you can be involved as a sponsor couple, please email Jennifer@perroots.com or call 702-528-3446. The parish office will be closed on MONDAY, FEB. 15TH in observance of Presidents Day. We will reopen on Tuesday, Page 5

Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Welcome to the Atrium Religious Education for 3-5 year olds Teresa Chisholm CGS Coordinator 702-292-2234 chisholm.tm@cox.net Classes are held Thursday 4:00-5:30pm in The Gathering Place Saint Augustine said: You can t teach another the Mystery of God you can help them only to seek it. The atrium is where the Mystery of God meets the mystery of the child. To have them take that away and make it part of their person, the child needs something material; the same way we needed Jesus as a human person in a human body. When the children reflect on the parables, live into the infancy narratives, or study the land Jesus came from or any work that is shared about who Jesus was, is always accompanied by a material that these children can go to and work on that is how that mystery touches that child s life. NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination - Our faith reminds us of the sure and certain hope that our loved one who died in Christ will rise with him on the last day. A compassionate and non-judgmental funeral coordinator will guide you in planning a beautiful funeral liturgy for your deceased loved one. You will be assisted in choosing Scripture readings and hymns that express our Christian hope in Christ s saving death and resurrection. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 CONSOLATION Helping the Bereaved - If one member suffers in the body of Christ which is the Church, all the members suffer with that member (1 Cor. 12:26) When a member of Christ s Body dies, the faithful are called to a ministry of consolation to those who have suffered the loss of one whom they love. This is an in-service offered to help individuals who are close to, work with, or know someone who has suffered a loss, but who are not sure how to help the bereaved. The instructor will teach the participants the stages of grief, describe normal grief behavior and share ways to journey with the individual they want to help or support.
