FAZtoRings! By Fr. Arnold Zamora After one of my Masses last weekend, somebody asked me: Father, can you give me a ring? I was about to ask for his phone number but I realized he was not asking me to call him. He was referring to the rings I mentioned at the Mass. Many of you already know the three rings married couples usually receive: the EN- GAGEMENT RING, the WEDDING RING and SUFFER- ING! The last ring is not only for married couples but for most of us. Even Christ received this ring. If you are wearing this type of ring right now, unite it with Christ s in your Lenten journey. You will also experience His glory. There are other rings that married couples receive. While expecting a child, they will receive this ring called BEARING. As they take care of their child, they will receive another ring: REARING! There are rings that not only married couples should avoid but everybody: BORING, WANDERING, SQUANDERING, PHILANDERING, DOMINEERING, NAGGER-RING! Never exchange these rings with anybody. They have no karats, only regrets! But here are the rings that are so important in married life and life in general: CARING, SHARING, PERSEVERING! Show how much you care. If you care, you are willing to share! Times are tough, hang on and persevere. ENDURING in love, for love endures everything! Last Saturday, we celebrated our Homebound Mass with the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick at the Flanagan Center. Our homebound parishioners have endured the test of time. They have become the Masters or Lords of the Rings! Again, there were many people behind the celebration that deserve our gratitude. Mani Glanz and Josephine Dito will always be on top of the list. Their patience and hard work in contacting our ringmasters are quite admirable. They are worth HON- ORING! A ring can mean a lot of things! It can mean a call. It can also mean a round circular object or simply a circle. It can even mean a square. Don t question me! Question the English dictionary why they call that square canvass, a Boxing Ring! There are just too many rings in life. Receive and give the rings that are worth keeping and sharing. By the way, remember if you are blessed with more years in life, you will also receive a bonus ring. It s called, RINGKLES (Wrinkles!). As we continue our Lenten journey ENCOUN- TERING the different rings in life, may we not lose sight of a God who gathers us together in this wonderful parish community and of the final GATHERING that awaits us in heaven. AMEN! Name: Address: Phone No. : Check #: THE 2010 ARCHBISHOP ANNUAL APPEAL As you know, Holy Name Parish has successfully completed and has gone beyond our assessed goal for the 2009 Annual Appeal. We thank you for your generous contribution to this Appeal last year. The time has come to launch the 2010 Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA) and we ask you once again for your generous support. Our AAA 2010 ASSESSMENT is $53,500 but Fr. Arnold would like to us to reach our challenge goal of $60,000. Aside from funding the overall budget of the Archdiocese, your contribution to the AAA along with other funding sources, allows Archbishop Niederauer and staff to provide other important services to local parishes and to the Universal Church. Through this appeal, the Archbishop is able to strengthen the good works of the various ministries and agencies that help those in need. Please help us achieve our goal. Send in your contribution or your pledges to the 2010 AAA now. You are the Light of the World Matthew 5:14 REMINDER: THERE WILL BE NO RELIGIOUS EDUCATION CLASSES ON SATURDAY, MARCH 27, 2010. CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES Today, we take up The Catholic Relief Services Collection. You are invited to give hope to Jesus in disguise. Give hope to the community that has lost its livelihood to a crop disease. Give hope to the refugee child, separated from her mother. Give hope to the immigrant, trying to keep faith alive in a foreign land. The Catholic Relief Services Collection helps to fund programs that give hope to refugees, immigrants, and the impoverished, including victims of war, natural disaster, and drought. Through humanitarian, economic, pastoral, and advocacy efforts, The Catholic Relief Services Collection gives hope. Please be generous in today s Collection. HOLY NAME LADIES AID COLLECTION Next Sunday, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Your generosity is very much appreciated. Boxes will be at the exits. COMING UP: Special Collection for CHILE EARTHQUAKE RELIEF April 10 & 11, 2010 Less than three months after the massive earthquake in Haiti, Chile has been devastated by the 8.8 magnitude earthquake on February 27, 2010, and the country continue to crumble with the numerous aftershocks that continue to occur. Many parishioners have asked how they can help the Chilean people in this time of great need. Caritas Chile is currently accepting donations through Catholic Relief Services (CRS) to assist the earthquake victims and their families. On April 10 & 11, Holy Name will be taking a second collection for the earthquake relief in Chile. Your generosity is appreciated. God wishes to test you like gold in the furnace. The dross is consumed by the fire, but the pure gold remain and its value increases. St. Jerome Emiliani

As always, our thanks to Jackie and Colleen for all their administrative help. YOU ARE ALL GREATLY APPRE- CIATED. Name(s) Name(s) Address City & Zip Phone E-mail: Good News! March 21, 2010 FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT Is 43:16 21 / Phil 3:8 14 / Jn 8:1 11 What did Jesus write on the ground? For centuries, readers of John s Gospel have speculated about what might be in the dust Jesus bent to. We see what happens to those gathered when Jesus speaks. Did they also see what Jesus wrote? He was interrupted from his teaching by a woman s accusers. Jesus was put on the spot. The scribes and Pharisees, the ones whose responsibility it was to keep an eye on Jewish law, brought the woman to him. She was caught in the act of adultery. From their point of view, it was an open-and-shut case. What would Jesus say? He didn t speak, though. Why did Jesus write? To buy time? Is pausing writing a strategy to give the atmosphere a chance to calm down? The tension only builds. Jesus waits. His challengers badger him even more. Is Jesus diverting attention, is he detached as he writes? Is Jesus giving them a chance to back down? They don t. Are they getting nervous now? Jesus doesn t act nervous or distracted. He s quite focused when he finally answers. Who was Jesus writing to? Did he write something for the questioners to see? What he says makes them pause, shuffle uncomfortably, and walk away. He challenges them and they leave. Then he starts to write again. Jesus words slice between the woman s sin and the judgment of those who caught her. They are caught. Jesus words echo inside them. They dare not condemn or judge the woman any more. And still Jesus writes. Who is reading now? What does the woman see, her eyes averted, staring at the ground where Jesus works? We aren t told. But watch the woman. She stays. She remains close to Jesus, the writer who is the fulfillment of the law. Wait here and see. Stay here with Me.
