HOLY NAME OF JESUS CHURCH San Francisco, CA www.holyname-sf.org April 18, 2010 "Jesus showed himself again to the disciples. It was by the Sea of Tiberias, and it happened like this: Simon Peter, Thomas called the Twin, Nathanael from Cana in Galilee, the sons of Zebedee and two more of his disciples were together. Simon Peter said, I m going fishing. They replied, We ll come with you. They went out and got into the boat but caught nothing that night. It was light by now and there stood Jesus on the shore, though the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. Jesus called out, Have you caught anything, friends? And when they answered, No, he said, Throw the net out to starboard and you ll find something. So they dropped the net, and there were so many fish that they could not haul it in. The disciple Jesus loved said to Peter, It is the Lord. At these words It is the Lord, Simon Peter, who had practically nothing on, wrapped his cloak round him and jumped into the water. The other disciples came on in the boat, towing the net and the fish; they were only about a hundred yards from land. As soon as they came ashore they saw that there was some bread there, and a charcoal fire with fish cooking on it. Jesus said, Bring some of the fish you have just caught. Simon Peter went aboard and dragged the net to the shore, full of big fish, one hundred and fifty-three of them; and in spite of there being so many the net was not broken. Jesus said to them, Come and have breakfast. None of the disciples was bold enough to ask, Who are you? ; they knew quite well it was the Lord. Jesus then stepped forward, took the bread and gave it to them, and the same with the fish. This was the third time that Jesus showed himself to the disciples after rising from the dead." - John 21:1-14. Photo by Bro. Arnold Zamora We would like to thank Fr. Dennis Barlaan, from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Daly City, for his makeover of the One Body Planter ($2,250). The area was transformed into the Garden of Golgotha for Holy Week and our Easter events. We are happy to report that the Church heater has had a valve replacement, and the temperature will now be regulated once again ($2,266). Unfortunately, the organ and piano have suffered with the change in temperature. We have had a humidifier/dehumifier installed since Easter, which will help to keep the piano in better tune ($1500). A carpet will be added underneath, to keep the piano from shifting over the floor surface as well. The Church organ is in need of more serious repairs, and this is will be addressed when fundraising efforts are completed. Our organ is one of the most impressive instruments in the Bay Area, worth over $650,000. Unfortunately, a major relay needs to be replaced; many notes are dead as a result of the deterioration. Such a magnificent piece of equipment should be used more, and the possible addition of a second console, located on the main floor, would allow us to put the organ to better use. Our routine repairs have included work on the Pastoral Center elevator and lighting. We also had the gutters and skylight replaced at the School ($12,900) over the Easter break. The Rectory water heater, circa 1941, will be upgraded, hopefully before we have a big flood ($5,000)! As far as our response to the Archdiocese Facilities Assessment performed last year we have met some of the goals. The Pastoral Center Fire Escape is the most expensive project looming ahead; we are waiting for an estimate for the repair or replacement. It may be less expensive to replace the entire structure, since it has been in place since 1949. The Parish Pastoral Council and Parish Finance Committee are working on ideas for a Capital Improvement Fund for the Parish in order to meet the upcoming costs. Stayed tuned for more details. With all of these, I trustingly sigh and sing: God will provide for all that we need. You can be an instrument of His amazing providence.

THE 2010 ARCHBISHOP S ANNUAL APPEAL The time has come to launch the 2010 Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA) and we ask you once again for your generous support. Our AAA 2010 ASSESSMENT is $53,500, but Fr. Arnold would like to us to reach a challenge goal of $60,000. Aside from funding the overall budget of the Archdiocese, your contribution to the AAA along with other funding sources, allows Archbishop Niederauer and staff to provide other important services to local parishes and to the Universal Church. Through this appeal, the Archbishop is able to strengthen the good works of the various ministries and agencies that help those in need. Please help us achieve our goal. Send in your contribution or your pledges to the 2010 AAA now. You are the Light of the World Matthew 5:14 MEMORY TREE To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church s 85th Anniversary, a proposal has been approved for a Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 300 leaves to be installed by the baptistry. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. It is well known by all who gather here that we are constantly dealing with many repairs needed in our aging buildings (circa 1941, 1949 and 1964). The funds raised from the Tree of Life will provide for the necessary expenses that we anticipate for the future. Specific details about the Holy Name Tree of Life will be in upcoming bulletins. Welcome New Parishioners! Please complete and return form to the Pastoral Center (1555 39th Ave.), or simply drop it in the collection basket. Kindly print all information. Dear Padre IS TV MASS ENOUGH? My son is divorced and remarried to a non-catholic. His first marriage was never annulled. He says he watches Mass every Sunday on TV instead of going to church because he can t take Communion. I think he needs to be going to Mass in a church with other Catholics, not sitting home alone watching it on TV. What do you think? Betty Dear Betty, It s a good sign that he s expressing his interest in the Catholic faith by watching Mass on television. Television Masses are a viable option for Catholics who are physically unable to attend Mass, but if your son is physically able it s a different matter. There s nothing like being there when it comes to worship, and by attending the liturgy with other Catholics every week and on holy days he ll fulfill his obligation by virtue of baptism in fully conscious and active participation (Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy [Sacrosanctum Concilium],14). Keep encouraging your son to attend weekly Mass in person, and also encourage him to contact his priest about starting annulment proceedings. Once the annulment is granted and his present marriage is convalidated, he ll be able to receive the Eucharist. While receiving Communion may be the privileged encounter with God, Mass is primarily for worshiping and giving thanks to God. By returning to Mass with other Catholics now and eventually taking Communion, your son s faith life will clearly be enriched. Bob Lindsey, C.Ss.R. 2010 Liguori Publications, Liguori, MO 63057-9999. San Francisco, CA 94122 NAMESAKES OF CHRIST On Palm Sunday we heard in Paul s letter to the Philippians that all things in heaven, on earth, and under the earth must bend their knee at the name of Jesus. That name comes back in today s first reading. The Sanhedrin, whom we heard about just a few short weeks ago in the reading of the Passion, are again confronted by Jesus in his name being proclaimed by the apostles. Peter and the others refuse to bend their knee to the authority of the Sanhedrin and stop teaching in the name of Christ. In fact, they rejoice that they have been persecuted for doing so. Do we turn to those first brave followers when we are called upon to give witness to the name of Christ in our name Christian day by day? When we must stand against, challenge, or confront forces that counter the gospel of justice, peace, joy, and beauty, do we give witness with no less than the Holy Spirit, or do we remain silent? Do we genuinely give honor to the name of Jesus by being his namesakes in the world today? Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.
