WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 4 R.C.I.A. Come and learn more about what you believe. The classes are open to everyone. For Catholics: if you want to deepen your faith; for non-catholics, as preparation for the Sacraments. Everyone has a gift: Come and share your gift. Classes will start on August 13 at the Pastoral Center from 7:30 to 9:00 PM. If you are interested, please call the Pastoral Center at (415) 664-8590. MARRIAGE PREPARATION Coming up will be two Marriage preparation sessions with 5 meetings each. One in October/November starting on October 14 until November 11 and another one in April/May starting on April 21st and ending on May 26th. For more information, please contact the Parish office at (415) 664-8590. ANNUAL RETREAT On August 22, 23, 24, 2008, the Lay Canossians will have their annual retreat at Christ the King Center in Citrus Heights. The theme of this retreat is A Reflection on Christian Life with Fr. Richard Parks. Registrations are due on July 1st. The fee is $160 per person/ meals included. The retreat is open to all who would like to have an experience of silence and growth. If interested, please call Jo Dito at 566-3053. MOVIE NIGHT The Next Movie Night will be on August 28 featuring the movie: Pope John Paul II, a true story. This epic film follows Karol Wojtyla's journey from his youth in Poland through his late days on the Chair of St. Peter. It explores his life behind the scenes: how he touched millions of people and changed the face of the Church and the world; how he defended the dignity of mankind. Jon Voight's powerful, Emmy-nominated performance as John Paul II was widely praised, as was Cary Elwes as the young Karol. Shot on location in Rome and Poland in close connection with the Vatican, this is the definitive epic film on the life of Pope John Paul II. AAA 2008 Thank you to all who have contributed or pledged to the 2008 Archbishop s Annual Appeal thus far. We are proud to announce that we have met our assessed goal. However, you are still in time to send in your donations to make it to the 2008 tax year. Remember, anything received beyond our assessment comes back to Holy Name. A list of names of Donors will be published soon. Thank you for your support! RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM This program is designed for children in grades K-8th attending public school. Catechism classes (CCD) are held: Saturday 10 AM-12 Noon Confirmation Class: Mondays from 6:30 PM 8 PM All children who have already received the Sacraments are asked to attend. Knowing the basics of our Catholic teachings and religion requires more than three or four years of Religious Education, because it is the Formation of faith for life. The program includes instruction for First Eucharist and Confirmation. We had a good number of children in 2007-2008, however, we feel that there are still many children in our parish boundaries attending public schools who are not attending our Religious Ed. Program. Please help us spread the word. It s everybody s responsibility. RCIA for Children and Youth ages 7-17 who need the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist: Tuesday 5:15-6:30 PM Registration begins Aug 16-Sept 20. Classes begin Sept. 27, 2008. Forms are available at the Pastoral Center, 1555 39th Ave., San Francisco, CA 94122 or for more information, please call (415) 664-8590. THANK YOU & CONGRATULATIONS Last June 22, members of the Whelan Academy of Irish Dance performed and sold raffle tickets after the 9:30 AM Mass here at Holy Name. The goal of this raffle was to be able to raise enough funds to send 8 girls to the National Irish Competition in Nashville, TN. Thanks to all of you, the team was able to not only go to Nashville but were able to compete in 4 different competitions. Congratulations to the dancers - job well done. Congratulations are also in order to our parishioner, MaryAnn White who won the top prize of $500 in the raffle. THE LOVE OF CHRIST Some of the most comforting words in scripture come to us today in these readings. The passage from Romans is particularly comforting when we are worried about our spiritual life and fretting about it. What will separate us from the love of Christ? (Romans 8:35) Of course, nothing can! Christ s love, manifested in his life, death, and resurrection, was wholly for God and us, and he will not permit anything, great or small, to separate us from him. Our longing, our hunger for him is sustained by the Eucharist, and even in the darkest of times, when God seems absent and it is difficult to pray, we know by faith that God is with us. God s fidelity to us is absolute, especially when we are in darkness and confusion. Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 IGNATIAN SPIRITUAL EXERCISES IN DAILY LIFE We take bodily exercises to strengthen our muscles, the blood circulation, the good functioning of the heart and so on. Similarly we make the Ignatian Spiritual Exercises in Daily Life to strengthen the faculties of our soul, our mind, our will, as well as to deepen our faith in God and our relationship with God. These exercises are offered to people who are unable to set aside a stretch of 8 days or 30 days to make the long Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius, but are willing to devote some 30 minutes a day for their spiritual well-being through gospel meditation, reflection, prayer and journaling. All students are invited to participate in the Conservatory s program of recitals held throughout the year. Private study on a musical instrument is a rewarding endeavor that offers an appreciation for the arts, while teaching a wide range of skills including hand-eye coordination, selfdiscipline and time management. Registrations for 2008-09 are now being accepted. Registering in the Fall applies to the full school year. The fall payment is due with the registration form. Parents will be billed in December for the spring payment. Most students should be able to attend 30 to 32 lessons out of the 36-week school year, beginning the week of Tuesday, September 2, 2008. This number is determined by counting the weeks in the school year and omitting school holidays and field trips. For a complete registration packet, or for more information, please contact Jackie Alcaraz at (415) 664-8590. PLEASE WELCOME OUR NEW VOICE TEACHER, SHANNON WOLFE Shannon Wolfe, soprano, is an active soloist in opera and chamber music. Most recently she was heard in the role of La Poésie in the chamber opera Les Arts Florissants, and as Soprano Soloist in both the Vivaldi Gloria and Bach Magnificat with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music s Baroque Ensemble. Additional stage credits include Lauretta in Gianni Schicchi with Northern Arizona University Opera, and Belinda in Dido and Aeneas at the Vancouver Early Music Society s annual Baroque Summer Music Festival. Aside from performing, Shannon has a private vocal studio where she teaches children and beginner adults and student teaches Dalcroze classes at the San Francisco Conservatory. She is an active performer and enjoys both the stage and the teaching studio. In her studio, students learn singing, performance and musicianship skills. Shannon believes that by appealing to and challenging each student's unique talents and skills, she helps them cultivate a life-long love of music. Any questions about the Shrine, please contact Ester Aure- Novero at ettyaure@yahoo.com Additionally, Shannon holds a Bachelor of Science degree, with honors, in Sociology with an emphasis in Social Psychology from Northern Arizona University.
