Father Arnold led the students in an examination of conscience, and then he, Father Nicasio Paloso and Father Edward Inyanwachi heard individual confessions. I hope that many of our Catholic parents will find the time to go to confession during the Lenten season. God bless each of you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos SPEECH TOURNAMENT Twelve of our seventh and eighth grade students are participating in the Speech Tournament at St. Ignatius this weekend. We wish them luck as they compete with other schools. KINDERGARTEN APPLICATIONS If your child is ready to begin kindergarten in the fall, please send your application in as soon as possible. Testing needs to be scheduled before Easter break. We look forward to the many siblings that will be joining Holy Name School and want to make sure we have a place for them. OUR LENTEN RETREAT The Roman Missal: DEEPENING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND WITH ONE ANOTHER Join us for a Day of Recollection with Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSP Saturday APRIL 9, 2011 9 AM 4 PM (with Reconciliation) in the Church REGISTER EARLY!! $20 RETREAT FEE (includes lunch) In Christian worship God continually calls us to deepen our relationships with the Triune God and with one another. Join us for a Day of Recollection as we explore how these relationships become expressed in Catholic worship, particularly during our celebrations of the Eucharist. We will explore some of the newly translated texts of the Roman Missal and join with the universal Church as we prepare Holy Week and the peak of our liturgical year. Our goal is to renew our relationships with God and with one another and to deepen our ministerial calling. We will end our afternoon with opportunities for the sacrament of reconciliation. Rev. Ricky Manalo, CSP, is a member of the Missionary Society of St. Paul (The Paulists). He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and his liturgical music is published by Oregon Catholic Press. He has written more than 20 pastoral articles on liturgy and culture, intercultural ministry and liturgical music. He is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, a board member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), and is an advisor to the U.S.Bishop s Secretariate on Cultural Diversity in the Church. Currently he is a doctoral candidate at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA and serves as adjunct professor at the Jesuit School of Theology. He resides at Old St. Mary s Cathedral, Chinatown, San Francisco. -------------------------------------- YES, I would like to a end Our Lenten Retreat with Fr. Holy Name of Jesus TREE OF LIFE Project To mark Holy Name of Jesus Church s 85th Anniversary, a Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves was installed at the back of the Church. Donors will have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. Inscribing a leaf is a beautiful way to: Celebrate a life, memorialize an event, commemorate an anniversary, give a gift, remember a loved one, dedicate a group, honor an accomplishment, express love and gratitude, make an offering etc. A leaf is a lasting record and a testimony of our faith and love and being in One Body with our faith community. Thank you for sharing your celebrations of faith with our Holy Name community. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - YES, I would like to donate to the Holy Name Tree of Life Project for Capital Improvement. (415) 664-8590. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora It is heart warming to know the generosity of our parishioners. We have responded positively to last week s second collection for the victims of the earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Even if it was an unannounced appeal (not announced a week prior to the actual collection), we still were able to collect $3,526.50. And I know there will still be some more to come. I am also happy that some of our parishioners have already returned their envelopes and pledges for the Archbishop s Annual Appeal, even just been a few days after we mailed them. We also received great response for the Penny Drive. Our Religious Education Ministry at Holy Name started this Penny Drive for this Lenten season to raise money for an Electric Votive candle stand to be installed in the vestibule of our chapel and also for a Statue of St. Bernadette for Our Lady of Lourdes grotto. Even though it s a penny drive, some parishioners have given more. We have been receiving checks with large amounts. More than that, I can see money from a few big heart.s I am reminded of the line of a song: A penny for your thoughts, a nickel for a kiss, a dime if you tell me that you love me. I don t know the rest of the lyrics but based from those lines, I could say, Is that all they re worth? God loves you and is telling you that. How much can you give? A gathering of folding money of various denominations were chatting about all the places they had recently been. The 100 Dollar bill said that he had been traveling all over the world: Rio, Spain, France, and back to the USA. The 20 Dollar bill said he had been to the gambling boats: Shreveport, Vicksburg, Baton Rouge. The 1 Dollar bill said it had been travelling from church to church to church! What if affluent Christians could be persuaded to take a vow of generosity? Many Christians give up something as a discipline for the 40 days of Lent. I toyed with the idea of giving up coffee, or chocolate, or potato chips maybe even all sweets. Before I could settle on the "what", one of those thoughts began to grow. I got to thinking, "what is really the value in me giving something up?" Rather than just giving up something, what about intentionally practicing generosity for 40 days? When you take a vow of generosity, God can use you to bless others in diverse and incredible ways. Here's the challenge give it a try! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back This week we continue our study of the Mass' introductory rites in preparation for the upcoming implementation of the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition. These revisions will go into effect when the First Sunday of Advent arrives on November 27, 2011. Question: What is the Confiteor? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: "I confess to almighty God..." With these words we begin a venerable prayer within the Roman Catholic tradition. The Confiteor is the first of three forms of the Act of Penitence, which takes place in most masses immediately following the Greeting and Introduction. Earlier forms of the Confiteor included a long list of saints who were called upon to intercede on our behalf. In time this list was reduced to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Saint Michael the Archangel, and Saint John the Baptist. In the current form, we call upon blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and then you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. This confession begins with personal admissions, but concludes by acknowledging our interdependency with all members of the Church, beginning with those in Heaven and ending with our brothers and sisters on earth. Question: How will the Confiteor be revised? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: In comparing the 1973 English translation, which we know well, with the revised translation expected in 2011, we see that the revision gives a much more literal translation of the Missale s Latin text, now fully translating peccavi nimis ( I have greatly sinned ) and mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. True enough, we are sinners, but our hope is not grounded in our own righteousness, but rather in the merits of Christ. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- THE CONFITEOR - REVISED ENGLISH TRANSLATION ROMAN MISSAL, 3RD EDITION NOT FOR USE UNTIL 11/27/11 I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore I ask blessed Mary ever-virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God.
