Dear Parishioners, Last April 24, 2009, long time Holy Name parishioner Grace Priolo passed away. She was 102 years old. I had the privilege of knowing Grace through the years. She was a remarkable woman. The following is a tribute given to her by one of her granddaughters at her funeral service. For this Mother s Day, I thought it fitting to share with you this tribute to a grandmother by her granddaughter. Happy Mother s Day to all moms and grandmas. Fr. Don When I think of my Grandma, I think of: A Chef who whipped up 9 course dinners that were 100% made from scratch and the freshest of foods. A San Franciscan who loved the city she lived in for over 80 years and attended all the city parades. A proud homeowner who loved looking out at the children playing in the school across the street as she gazed at the beautiful bay she could see from her window. A pizza Grandma who made pizza just as an appetizer that we all wanted more and more of. A Gardener who loved her hydrangeas, gladiolas, carnations, daisies and other beautiful flowers she could grow. A Seamstress who sewed, stitched and knitted clothes, booties, dresses, bedspreads, lamp shades and anything else her creative mind thought of...all with such style, beauty and uniqueness. A Devoted Catholic attending Church every Sunday and many years daily while also proudly Cleaning God s House. A Proud Italian who often spoke of her great heritage. A Storyteller who s eyes sparkled as she told the many stories of her life. A Wife dedicated to making the man who says he won the lottery when he met her happy through their years together. A Proud and Loving Mother who loved her son with all her heart and soul unconditionally. A Grandmother who loved her grandchildren and her great grandchildren with all her heart and soul. A Family Woman who loved her nieces, nephews, cousins, whether it was first, second, third, or great with all her heart. A Sister and Daughter who will now be at peace for being reunited with her family. A Saint who prayed for friends and family in time of need and many times making those prayers come true. An Angel of God who s vivacious life and spirit will forever be missed, cherished, and never forgotten. When I think of my Grandma, I think of: A woman of TRUE GRACE, style, beauty, pride, honor, wisdom, class and a LOVE for others like no other... My mother was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. All I am I owe to my mother. I attribute all my success in life to the moral, intellectual, and physical education I received from her. George Washington
WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 HOLY NAME SCHOOL Dear Holy Name Families, Thank all of you who attended the Salve Regina Concert on Friday evening. The concert was a joyful, beautiful tribute to Mary as we began the month of May. It took a tremendous amount of preparation by Mr. Tony Eiras and his incredible committee. Parents, parishioners and guests enjoyed music and song from various cultures. Thank you for attending the concert and thank you for allowing your child to participate in this late evening event. God bless you during May, Mary s month. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos Principal CATECHISM CORNER #32 by Jerry Back I was taking a walk to the library with my daughter on a recent Sunday afternoon and came across three things that made me think, "who would do such a thing in this neighborhood?" Two of the things were left on the ground and one was written on the side of a wall. All three things were objectionable and were more than just basic trash (they were terrible offenses against God, really). I was fortunately able to pick up and throw away one of the items on the ground. Unfortunately, I couldn't do much about the other two offenses at the time, though, I may come back with some paint thinner and clean off the graffiti if someone else doesn't beat me to it! All this made me think about how important it is to be a good neighbor to others and I wondered what the Catechism had in it with regards to the topic (a lot, I found out, not surprisingly). CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR First Communicants WHO RECEIVED THE SACRAMENT OF HOLY EUCHARIST LAST SUNDAY, MAY 3rd, 2009 David Anthony Brown Caitlyn Carnecer Caitlin Chan Justin Chen Marissa Chen Michelle Darwis William Hunter Davis Brandon Dayauon Bernadette Escalona Kevin Galvin Hope Giron Bianca Haas Brendan Hurley Mavis Ibasco Andrew Kau Kaitlin Leong Daphne Mursalin Monique Nguyen Anthony Nguyen Lakambini O Donnell Harvey Samson Reyna Ramos-Santos Chaylene Tran Marvin Villanueva Marcel Ware Question: What did Jesus consider His greatest commandment? Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (2196): In response to the question about the first of the commandments, Jesus says: "The first is, 'Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one; and you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.' The second is this, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' There is no other commandment greater than these." The apostle St. Paul reminds us of this: "He who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law. The commandments, 'You shall not commit adultery, You shall not kill, You shall not steal, You shall not covet,' and any other commandment, are summed up in this sentence, 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' Love does no wrong to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfilling of the law." Question: How can we better respect each other? Answer from the Catechism (1931): Respect for the human person proceeds by way of respect for the principle that "everyone should look upon his neighbor (without any exception) as 'another self,' above all bearing in mind his life and the means necessary for living it with dignity." No legislation could by itself do away with the fears, prejudices, and attitudes of pride and selfishness which obstruct the establishment of truly fraternal societies. Such behavior will cease only through the charity that finds in every man a "neighbor," a brother.
