FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora When we were looking to buy property I had this overzealous realtor show us what can only be described as a totally worn-out old farm. I mean the land had just been worked to death. The weeds were hardly even growing. The smiling super salesman said, Now really, all this land needs is a little water, a nice cool breeze and some good people. I replied, Yeah, I agree, but couldn't the same be said of Hell? After one morning assembly, a school parent approached me and asked: What does it mean Jesus went to hell? He was, of course, referring to the phrase in the Apostle s Creed: he descended into hell. I told him that the hell we are referring to here is not the place we normally think of hell, as a place where all the unforgivable sinners experience eternal damnation. Hell here means the abode of the dead Sheol in Hebrew or Hades in Greek. After the fall of man, Heaven was temporary closed and all who died went to this place, waiting for the Redeemer. The church calls it Patriarchal limbo because all the just and the big folks who came before Jesus were there. Jesus came to this place to free the just, telling them Heaven is now open again. Jesus, like all human beings, experienced death and in his soul joined the others in the realm of the dead. But he descended there as Savior, proclaiming the Good News to the spirits imprisoned there (Catechism of the Catholic Church no.632). There is no place in this world that God has not visited, even hell - the abode of the dead. Christ went down into the depths of death so that 'the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God, and those who hear will live.' Jesus, 'the Author of life,' by dying destroyed 'him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and [delivered] all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage.' (CCC #635). How often you hear people say, I m going through hell right now. Hold on, Christ our Savior will come and visit the hells in your life. Know more about our Catholic faith. Watch the film showing of the DVD Series on Catholicism every Thursday, 7-8pm, showing through August 23 rd, at the Flanagan Center. Thanks to Angela Testani for initiating this presentation. This could be our prelude to the celebration of which our Holy Father Pope Benedict declares the Year of Faith in our Catholic Church that will commence this October. RCIA Reunion 2012 Did you become a Catholic through the Holy Name RCIA program? Were you a sponsor or a member of the Holy Name catechist team? If so, we would love to invite you to a special reunion evening on Wednesday, September 12th, at 7:30PM, in the Pastoral Center. Let's take this time to remember our journeys over refreshments and fellowship once again with our Christian brothers and sisters who have been part of the Holy Name RCIA program. We are the people who became reborn of water and spirit or who had helped those catechumen in need of formation and direction. Mark your calendars and please share this information with any past Holy Name RCIA attendees who may now be attending a different parish--let's all see each other again at the Holy Name RCIA Reunion 2012! RCIA Classes to Begin in the Fall The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process, established for the universal Church, for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FALL REGISTRATION Registration forms for Religious Education are available at the back of the Church. Forms can be returned to the Parish office. Register early to hold a place for your child. In many places around the globe, the Church struggles to be a visible sign of Christ s peace: in poor dioceses where many depend on the Church for social and pastoral support; in regions where Catholics are persecuted and must be helped discreetly; in na ons overloaded with refugees or vic ms of war and natural disasters. The Peter s Pence Collec on gives us the opportunity to extend a sign of peace to the Body of Christ around the world. Our gi s to this annual Collec on help the Holy Father strengthen dioceses, religious orders, and struggling communi es of faith when they need it most. Help the Holy Father con nue to cast the peace of Christ upon the world. Thank you for your generous dona on in the Peter s Pence Collec on. Visit www.va can.va, and search for Peter s Pence for more informa on about the Peter s Pence Collec on and the work it makes possible. Living Stewardship Now Part of good stewardship is to be welcoming, inviting, and hospitable, with no strings attached. Speak to people before and after Mass. Volunteer as a greeter, or with a ministry serving returning Catholics. Be a sponsor for someone in RCIA. Welcome newcomers in your neighborhood. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. All rights reserved Each of us, in spite of physical or personal shortcomings or limitations (real or imagined), is called and chosen to be a messenger of the saving grace of God, each in our own way. Whether we are a spouse, parent, child, student, worker, employer whatever role we have in life, God can work in us and through us to be signs of grace for others. When we find ourselves afflicted with the thorn of selfdoubt, let us use that weakness to find our strength in God, and through our faith in Christ, to continue to proclaim the Good News of Salvation. R.C.I.A. (RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS) INFORMATION & FORMS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE BACK OF THE CHURCH ONLY A CARPENTER Where did he get all this wisdom? Isn t he the carpenter Mary s son? Who does he think he is? Jesus was definitely a small-town boy. Nazareth at the time was more like a village, with probably no more than a few hundred residents. Everyone knew him and his whole family, even all the cousins and second cousins. They had him pigeon-holed. He was the village carpenter. End of story. So in today s Gospel, when Jesus spoke up in the synagogue, the neighbors took offense at him. In Jesus world, there was no such thing as upward mobility. You could work harder and become better off, but once a carpenter always a carpenter. It shook all the neighbors up to hear Jesus read the scriptures and preach with authority at Sabbath services. How dare he? Jesus did not press them any harder. Mark tells us Jesus was amazed at their lack of faith. He quietly healed a few people and moved on with his disciples. We can learn important things here from Jesus example. We cannot force belief on other people, or insist they accept what we know to be true. Not everyone is ready to hear. For those parents whose grown children have drifted away from the Church, there is the temptation to pressure them to come back. Sadly, this may increase the distance and cause arguments. The other side of the coin, however, is that some people are just waiting to be asked. True stories abound of men or women who attend Mass for years with a Catholic spouse and children, and even give a generous stewardship of their time, talent, and treasure, yet never take that final step into the community until someone and it could be you asks, Would you like to join the Church? LIFETOUCH DIRECTORY PHOTOS For those of you who were not able to get your photos taken last June, there is one more opportunity to have your photos taken. You can schedule your own appointment online: https://www.securedata-trans14.com/ap/ holynameofjesuschurch/index.php?page=10 Or you may also call Jackie at the Parish office (415) 664-8590 to schedule your appointment for either Friday, July 27 or Saturday July 28. TIPS & IDEAS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY DAY: Make sure your professional photos turn out great! Here are some tips and ideas to prepare for and get the most out of your upcoming professional Lifetouch photography session. Allow for about an hour to: Check in Be photographed View your electronic portrait images and select your directory pose Purchase products Remember that you can purchase portrait products at your session. Portraits make wonderful gifts and treasured family keepsakes. If you choose to purchase additional portraits, we accept cash, checks, and major credit cards. Grooming Make sure nails are trimmed and clean. Simple hairstyles and natural makeup are best. Avoid haircuts within 48 hours of your portrait sitting. Ideally, haircuts should happen 2 weeks prior. Have any hair and makeup supplies available for quick touch-ups. Clothing Solid colors or simple patterns look best. Busy patterns on clothing are distracting. Medium to dark shades create a timeless look & are slenderizing. Small jewelry/accessories compliment your face better. Avoid large, distracting accessories. Make sure your shoes match your outfit. They might show in some poses. Long sleeves are better for adults to focus attention on the face. Short sleeves are ok for infants and children. If you wear glasses, feel free to wear them. Our photographers are trained to minimize any glare. You may invite grandparents or other family members/loved ones to join your portrait sitting (even if they are not members). You may bring your household pet to your portrait session, you may bring meaningful items such as sports equipment, musical instruments, special toys or books, etc. We encourage you to have fun at your session and express your true personality!
