FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora If June is the month of goodbyes, July is the month of hellos. Welcome to Rev. Toan X. Nguyen, our new parochial vicar, to our parish community. We will hear more about him soon. As a new kid on the block he will have his first impression of our parish and some of you will have your first impression of him. I forgot to ask your first impression of me when I came here three years ago. July 1 st will be the start of my fourth year here at Holy Name. It was just last year that I celebrated a very important milestone in my priestly life my 25 th anniversary. It reminds me of this story: A Catholic priest was being honored at a dinner celebrating the 25th anniversary of his priesthood. A leading local politician, who was a member of the priest's parish, was chosen to make the presentation and give the keynote speech at the dinner, but he was delayed in traffic, so the priest decided to say his own few words while they waited. "You will understand," he said, "the seal of the confessional can never be broken, however I got my first impressions of the parish from the first confession I heard here. I can only hint vaguely about this, but when I came here 25 years ago I thought I had been assigned to a terrible place. The very first bloke who entered my confessional told me how he had stolen a television set, and when stopped by the police, had almost murdered the officer! Further, he told me he had embezzled money from his place of business and had an affair with his boss's wife. I was appalled! But as the days went on, I learned that my people were not all like that, and I had, indeed, come to a fine parish full of understanding and loving people." Just as the priest said his thank you, the politician arrived full of apologies at being late. He immediately began to make the presentation and give his talk. "I'll never forget the first day our parish priest arrived in this parish," said the politician. "In fact, I had the honor of being the first one to go to him in confession." They say first impressions are lasting but they can also be deceiving. The true colors always come out. The truth will always set you free. Happy Freedom day! RCIA Classes to Begin in the Fall The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the process, established for the universal Church, for individuals to become Catholic and receive the sacraments of initiation Baptism, Confirmation, and the Eucharist. The sacraments of initiation are received at the Easter Vigil. In 2013, the Easter Vigil will take place on Saturday, March 30. RCIA is designed for the following persons: Non-baptized persons desiring to become Catholic (Non-baptized persons receive all three sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil) Non-Catholic Christians desiring to become Catholic (Non-Catholic Christians are received into full communion with the Catholic Church and receive the sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil) Adult Catholics who have not received the sacrament of Confirmation. No obligation classes will be begin in September and run until about Pentecost Sunday (May 19, 2013). Laying Down their nets for God: Canossian Anniversaries Have you ever thought what it is to dedicate yourself to someone else s life-project? That is exactly what happens when a religious, or priest, consecrates him or herself to God: they lay down their nets (their projects) and take up that of God, and follow Him. Our Province of Cristo Rey North America recently celebrated the yes of four such women who have been following the Lord s project through their vows of poverty, chastity and obedience for more than a combined 240 years! Let me introduce them: Sister Maria Hsu, from Hong Kong. Celebrating 50 years of religious Sr. Maria is a convert to Christianity, through being educated in Canossian schools in Hong Kong. She later decided to enter with the Sisters there. She was asked to come to the United States to assist with Catholic outreach to a growing Chinese community. She helped establish an ongoing diocesan ministry to the Chinese in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. She continues to serve in San Francisco as the pastoral coordinator to Chinese immigrants. Sister Teresa Bonaventure, from Italy Celebrating 60 years of religious Sr. Teresa entered the novitiate in Vimercate, Italy with a desire to serve wherever God desired. And so she is living that desire each day! She served in the United States since 1965, and in 1969 was one of the first group of Canossians to come to a new mission in the Diocese of Sacramento. She opened houses in Jackson, Sacramento (Our Lady of Lourdes our blog community), and in the diocese of San Francisco. She is currently serving in London, England as a coordinator of Catechesis. Sister Teresa Celine Norris, from Singapore Celebrating 60 years of religious Sr. Teresa Celine professed her first vows in Kowloon, China in 1951. She was one of the first four missionary Sisters to start our foundation in Albuquerque, New Mexico, 50 years ago today (August 17, 1961). She has served in various communities in the last 50 years in the United States, and continues to teach catechesis and sacramental preparation at Our Lady of Lourdes Parish, Sacramento, California. She has served as a teacher and catechist at various parishes in Albuquerque, New Mexico, as well as in San Francisco Diocese. Although retired, she still enjoys talking with individuals, praying for vocations and greet visitors to our Spirituality Center in Albuquerque, New
HEALED When John developed cancer, his wife, Jane, was determined to care for him at home as long as she could. Their adult children took turns driving John to the hospital for treatments, while a team of friends, neighbors, and parishioners including their friend Elizabeth set up a roster to make meals, run errands, and do household chores to ease the burden on the family. In spite of an initial good response to treatment, over a period of weeks John lost ground and it was determined that the cancer had spread. The treatments were painful and exhausting, and with Jane s agreement, John decided to refuse any further procedures and rely on a hospice nurse to help keep him as comfortable as possible. Every time Elizabeth came by she could see John getting weaker and weaker. He did not complain; in fact, he said very little. This once lively and intelligent man seemed deeply troubled. Elizabeth had a sense that the suffering she saw was not just the illness, but something more. Saying nothing to anyone, she decided to pray constantly that John might receive Christ s healing in whatever way he needed it most. A few days later, when the pastor came by to anoint John and give him Communion, John asked to make his confession. Apparently he had cut off all connections with his only brother after a family quarrel forty years before and had never spoken of him since. John said it broke his heart that he had been so unforgiving and he wanted to make peace. John s son traced this unknown and long-lost relative through the Internet. John and his brother had a whole precious day together, and that night John died, calm and healed of heart. Copyright 2011, World Library Publications. TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The pilgrim experience of going by foot to Santiago de Compostella, the shrine of St. James, reaches its high point a month from now at the feast of the Apostle. By now, tens of thousands of pilgrims are already on the road. Typically, they cover twelve to twenty miles a day through rough territory. The difficult journey and the often primitive lodging facilities are made bearable by the joy of the pilgrims, their songs and prayers. When their journey is documented properly, they receive the scallop shell, a reminder not only of James the fisherman, but also his call to fish for human beings and to baptize the nations. In the Middle Ages, those who wore this badge on their hats were granted lodging and hospitality wherever they went. Next to the palm, the sign of a Jerusalem pilgrim, the scallop shell was most highly prized. In the Middle Ages, some people so enjoyed the pilgrim road, although it was filled with discomfort and danger, that they spent most of their lives on the road. Today, some people take up the route for exercise, but are drawn gradually into the spirituality of the journey. As you make your summer travels, always fold in an element of pilgrimage: a long walk through beautiful countryside, a visit to a church, a prayer of gratitude for your journey through life's hills and valleys. --James Field, Copyright (c) J.
