FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora A young man was having some money problems, and needed $200 to get his car fixed and road-worthy again. But had run out of people to borrow from. So, he calls his parents via the operator, and reverses the charge and says to his dad, "I need to borrow two hundred dollars." At the other end, his father says, "Sorry, I can't hear you, son, I think there may be a bad line." The boy shouts, "Two hundred. I need two hundred dollars!" "Sorry, I still can't hear you clearly," says his father. The operator cuts in, "Sorry to butt in, but I can hear him perfectly." The father says, "Oh, good. YOU send him the money!" Once again it is the time of the year that I will be standing in front of you to ask for money for the Archbishop s Annual Appeal (AAA) which is one of the primary sources of funds for the basic work of the Church in the Archdiocese-wide ministries and programs. This is not an easy job for me and for most pastors. Talking about money is easy and besides money talks. But asking for it is difficult especially when the reception is not clear and people don t seem to hear you. It takes a lot of humility and prayers. I am glad Mrs. Marybeth Cody will be assisting me this year. We are now in the season of Lent and we are reminded once again that our life is just lent from the Lord. Anything borrowed has to be returned. Remember, you are dust and unto dust you shall return. No matter how strong, powerful, and wealthy you may be, you will "return to dust." A parishioner reminded me this week that when we return our borrowed life to God, not a single penny we could take with us. What can we return to God for now? HOLY NAME Youth Ministry! - Don t Forget! The youth group (7th grade and up) meets every 2nd & 4th Sunday after the 9:30 AM Mass. We invite all youth from 7th-12th grade to join us for fun, fellowship and to learn more about the person of Jesus Christ. OUR LENTEN RETREAT The Roman Missal: DEEPENING OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH CHRIST AND WITH ONE ANOTHER Join us for a Day of Recollection with Fr. Ricky Manalo, CSP Saturday APRIL 9, 2011 9 AM 4 PM (with Reconciliation) in the Church REGISTER EARLY!! $20 RETREAT FEE (includes lunch) In Christian worship God continually calls us to deepen our relationships with the Triune God and with one another. Join us for a Day of Recollection as we explore how these relationships become expressed in Catholic worship, particularly during our celebrations of the Eucharist. We will explore some of the newly translated texts of the Roman Missal and join with the universal Church as we prepare Holy Week and the peak of our liturgical year. Our goal is to renew our relationships with God and with one another and to deepen our ministerial calling. We will end our afternoon with opportunities for the sacrament of reconciliation. Rev. Ricky Manalo, CSP, is a member of the Missionary Society of St. Paul (The Paulists). He is a graduate of the Manhattan School of Music and his liturgical music is published by Oregon Catholic Press. He has written more than 20 pastoral articles on liturgy and culture, intercultural ministry and liturgical music. He is a member of the North American Academy of Liturgy, a board member of the National Association of Pastoral Musicians (NPM), and is an advisor to the U.S.Bishop s Secretariate on Cultural Diversity in the Church. Currently he is a doctoral candidate at the Graduate Theological Union in Berkeley, CA and serves as adjunct professor at the Jesuit School of Theology. He resides at Old St. Mary s Cathedral, Chinatown, San Francisco. -------------------------------------- YES, I would like to donate to a end Our Lenten Retreat with Fr. ALL ARE WELCOME! LIFT UP YOUR HEARTS! Preparation for the revised Roman Missal, third typical edition by Jerry Back Question: Why do we even have an Entrance Procession? Answer from the Archdiocese of San Francisco: The Entrance Procession in liturgical celebrations began when the Church community started to celebrate in large buildings. For centuries these processions have served as visible expressions of our liturgical community gathering around the Table of the Lord in praise and worship. Each time God's people and the Church's ministers come to the altar in procession, the whole assembly is invited to be attentive to the profound act of prayer that we share. The altar, our table of banquet and sacrifice, is a symbol of Christ. We offer reverence with a kiss by the priest and deacon and a profound bow by all the ministers present. Incense is sometimes used to venerate the altar, a sign of our prayer and sacrifice rising up to God. To symbolize our unity as we gather, the community usually sings a song or psalm of celebration. In doing so we allow the music and its message to help us give praise to God. Thus in movement, symbol and song we unite as a worshiping assembly and prepare ourselves to experience the mystery of God in Word and Sacrament. ----------------------------------------------------------- SPOTLIGHT on SYMBOLS Consider all that makes up the entrance procession--the Cross leading us, the Book of the Gospels, the various servant ministers, including the bishop or priest vested to lead the assembly in this sacrificial meal. The procession is symbolic of our entire pilgrim Christian life. ----------------------------------------------------------- So, now I better understand why we just can't all be at our assigned places when it's time to begin Mass. An Entrance Procession is not only is our Church's tradition but also provides profound meaning and divine purpose. Dear Holy Name Families, On Sunday, March 6, our second grade Catholic students, a fourth grader and a fifth grader received their First Holy Communion at our 9:30 Mass. The students were involved in many parts of the Mass, joined Father Arnold Zamora on the altar during the Consecration and joined many parents and guests in prayer and song. Thank you to Sharon Aymard, Diane Preble and Sister Esther Ling for preparing the youngsters during the school year to receive the Sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist. Thank you to Tony Eiras and Victor Flaviani for providing the music for this special Mass. Our prayer is that these Sacraments will be a source of strength to the children during their lives. On Saturday evening, March 5, Ryan Hall was a bevy of activity as many people joined together for the annual St. Patrick s Dinner Dance. Thank you to Marie Carr, Colleen Durkin, Mike Downing, Carol Murphy and Kathy Gallagher for, once again, organizing this fun event, which supports our sports teams. Thank you to Nora Murphy and Alcira Bermudez who, as usual, decorated Ryan Hall. Thank you to the huge kitchen crew who worked all day to provide us with a delicious corned beef and cabbage dinner.
