HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH San Francisco, CA Serving the Outer Sunset since 1925 PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Holy Name of Jesus Parish in San Francisco is a welcoming multicultural and liturgical community that celebrates our Christian Faith. In the spirit of the Joy of the Gospel we work together promoting Catholic values and teachings. Our parish encourages a strong devotion to our Blessed Mother Mary, who gives us an example of faithful discipleship and a generous stewardship way of life.

Mary, the Holy Mother of God January 1, 2017 Mary kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart. Luke 2:19 TODAY S READINGS First Reading The LORD bless you and keep you! FAZtor s Notes By Fr. Arnold Zamora Happy New Year! Another year over, a new year just begun! What I particularly like about this first day of this New Year is that it falls on a Sunday. There is a good chance more people will go to church and join the Universal Church in celebrating the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God. On January 3rd, we will celebrate our parish feast day, the Feast of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. We have a special prayer prepared by Roonie Flaherty after the 9AM Mass and little reception. A year over means a year older! People don t want to get old. But if you want to live longer, you ve got to get older. Mark Twain once said: Age is an issue of mind over matter. If you don t mind, it doesn t matter. Well, maybe people don t mind getting old, they just don t want to look old. That s why they won t tell you their age. I have always been told that it is not proper to ask a lady her age. But people are proud to tell you their anniversaries, how many years they have been married or months they have been together. For priests, it doesn t bother us nor matter to us. That s why I am telling you that this year I will be 31 years old. Really? Yes, 31 years as a priest and I still wish that is my age. 31 years ago right after my ordination, I was assigned as music director and formator of seminarians in our diocesan seminary, the Diocese of Tagbilaran, Philippines, my diocese before I moved to San Francisco. I would say that one of my joys and fulfillment in life is to see my students become priests. Imagine my great joy upon hearing that one of my students is going to be a bishop. On January 5 th, my former student, Msgr. Alberto Uy, will be ordained bishop and will be installed as the new bishop of the Diocese of Tagbilaran, the following day, January 6 th. I will be attending these 2 very special occasions and will be music director leading the 100-voice choir and orchestra. If your student is going to be a bishop, there is no doubt that you are getting old. Another way to know if you are old is when your school principal is younger and just got married. Our school principal Natalie Cirigliano sealed a covenant of life and love with Neil Brosnan (who by the way was born the year I was ordained) last December 31st at St. Catherine s Church, Burlingame. The wedding was officiated by Fr. John Ryan, the pastor of St. Catherine s. Congratulations Natalie and Neil! I am getting older but the old folks say I am just middle age. SON: Dad, what s middle age? FATHER: That s when you lose all your growth at the top and do all your growing in the middle. Trivia: How do you name three consecutive days without using the words Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday? Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow! Yesterday is gone; tomorrow is uncertain; today is here. Use it wisely. Thus LOVE more deeply, FORGIVE more readily, GIVE more generously, and SPEAK more kindly. That s my New Year s message and wish for all of us! Announcement: The Parish staff will be back in the office on Tuesday, January 3, 2017. The school will be back in session on Thursday, January 5th. FAITH FORMATION * CATECHESIS * PASTORAL OUTREACH * Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC Crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415) 664-8590 On this World Day of Prayer for Peace, we entrust ourselves to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of God and Queen of Peace. May we be instruments of peace, wherever we are. A HAPPY NEW YEAR FULL OF GOD S BLESSINGS! Reflection for the New Year: In this new year I pray: to live deeply, with purpose; to live freely, with detachment; to live wisely, with humility; to live justly, with compassion; to live lovingly, with fidelity; to live mindfully, with awareness; to live gratefully, with generosity; to live fully, with enthusiasm. Help me to hold this vision and to daily renew it in my heart, becoming ever more one with you, (my loving God). -Joyce Rupp A Thank You Letter from Pomeroy Center by Cindy Blackstone: On behalf of all the participants at the Pomeroy Recreation and Rehabilitation Center, I would like to thank you and all the generous parishioners of Holy Name of Jesus Catholic Church, for the beautiful Christmas gifts given to our participants with disabilities. Our amazing participants sincerely appreciate each gift, and look forward to the day they get to open their special treasure. The look of joy on their faces when they unwrap the gift especially selected for them is priceless! Our participants are so thankful and appreciative. I know they would want to give each parishioner a great big hug and smile. Please extend my sincere gratitude to each and every person who was so thoughtful and generous.
