Third Sunday of Easter April 26, 2009 You alone, O LORD, bring security to my dwelling. Psalm 4:9 TODAY S READINGS First Reading The author of life you put to death, but God raised him from the dead (Acts 3:13-15, 17-19). Psalm Lord, let your face shine on us (Psalm 4). Second Reading We have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous one (1 John 2:1-5a). Gospel Thus it is written that the Christ would suffer and rise from the dead on the third day (Luke 24:35-48). CATHOLIC HOME MISSIONS COLLECTION There are many places right here in the United States and in its overseas dependencies where the Church is poor, communities are scattered, and priests are few. Money given to the Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps Catholic communities across America survive and thrive, by underwriting evangelization, religious education, education for future priests, training for lay ministers, and poor parishes that would have to close their doors without outside help. The Catholic Home Missions Appeal helps strengthen the Catholic Church at home. More than ninety-two cents of every dollar contributed goes directly to the missions. Your generosity is appreciated this weekend. WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 4 THE GREENING OF HOLY NAME In conjunction with San Francisco Energy Watch, a joint project of PG & E and the City of San Francisco, we have been upgrading our lighting in the Church, Pastoral Center and Rectory this past week. This program is offered to small businesses. By changing our incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescent bulbs, as well as using lower wattage fluorescent tubes, we are going to save a substantial amount on our electric bills, without sacrificing light and illumination to do so. For the Church: Total cost of upgrade: $4,706.00 SF Energy Watch Rebate: $4,375.31 Holy Name co-pay: $330.69 Estimated Annual Savings: $2,103.43 For the Rectory: Total cost of upgrade: $2,581.17 SF Energy Watch Rebate: $2,581.17 Holy Name Co-pay: 0 Estimated Annual Savings: $6,575.37 For the Pastoral Center: Total Cost of upgrade: $2,000.61 SF Energy Watch Rebate: $2,000.61 Holy Name co-pay: 0 Estimated Annual Savings: $3,640.06 The School is also following the recommendations of the Energy Audit to help with their energy costs for lighting. CATECHISM CORNER by Jerry Back Summer is around the corner and with that vacations and travelling may soon be in your plans. You may wonder how are you going to be able to find a church to attend while being away from home on Sunday or on any other day of obligation. Perhaps you've heard of this website, but I've used www.masstimes.org several times to find a Eucharist service while I've been out of town. It's easy to use and will give you parish names, Mass times and directions on how to get to the nearest Mass from where ever you find yourself! Being away from home is no excuse for missing Mass and you'll enjoy celebrating the universality of our Church with different people, in a new place. Masstimes.org is even useful when you're still in San Francisco, but just need a local Sunday afternoon Mass to attend because your Sunday morning was spent being somewhere else. Question: How often are we obliged to go to Mass? Answer from the Catechism of the Catholic Church (1389): The Church obliges the faithful to take part in the Divine Liturgy on Sundays and feast days and, prepared by the sacrament of Reconciliation, to receive the Eucharist at least once a year, if possible during the Easter season. But the Church strongly encourages the faithful to receive the holy Eucharist on Sundays and feast days, or more often still, even daily. Question: Can we ever skip going to Mass and, if it's not possible to go, what does the Church recommend for us to do? Answer from the Catechism (2181, 2183): 2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin. 2183 "If because of lack of a sacred minister or for other grave cause participation in the celebration of the Eucharist is impossible, it is specially recommended that the faithful take part in the Liturgy of the Word if it is celebrated in the parish church or in another sacred place according to the prescriptions of the diocesan bishop, or engage in prayer for an appropriate amount of time personally or in a family or, as occasion offers, in groups of families."
