Without guidance and care, especially in a climate like Israel s, they would die quickly from predators, starvation, or just their own slowness. The scriptural image of us as the Lord s flock is not terribly flattering to us, since it is only the never-ending diligence of a watchful shepherd that allows the flock to survive. The feast of Christ the King was intended to call the world back to Christ as the sole power of the world, to bring back a flock that had been scattered by many negative forces of the growing industrial, scientific, and war torn world of the early twentieth century. It is fitting that, as we celebrate Christ the King, we hear about Christ the Shepherd who cares for us and who, likewise, will be there at the end of time. Interestingly enough, as the Gospel illustrates, our own destiny is determined by the way we have been shepherds to the rest of the flock. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

GIVE THANKS

Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe - November 23, 2014 Here s a little twist (a Prayer Game ) on my annual Thanksgiving acrostic. On Thanksgiving Day, take a piece of paper and write the letters of THANKSGVING down the left side of the paper and either give each person a copy or let small groups work together to see how many different things for which he/she/they are grateful that the person/ group can write after each letter in a specified amount of time. You can establish some rules like, NOUNS only, that is no adjectives like Good, Very, Nice (unless the adjective is really part of the thing, like my HASH browns or SWEET potatoes) in other words, real solid things! Your time limit might be, for example, 10 minutes. Then, check everyone out: prizes might be given to 1) whoever has the most (legitimate) altogether and to 2) whoever has the most original (items that no one else had). I timed myself for exactly 10 minutes and here s my list of things for which I am grateful (admittedly, some of them are a stretch!): Turkeys, Thanksgiving Day, Television Home, Holidays, Hash Browns Artworks, Artichokes, Avocados, Asparagus, America Noodles, Newspapers Kenny family, Kitchen, Kool Aid Sweets, Sweet Potatoes, Sugar God, Gloves (in winter) Government ( I do like our system.) I-phone, Ice Cream Vision (I have 20/20!) Victories (at Gorman football games) Independence, Islands (like Hawaii, Caribbean) Necessities (like food, clothing, shelter) Nevada Garage (to store my junk), Goodies (candy, cookies, etc.) I got 32 in ten minutes! Have a Happy Thanksgiving. Hope to see you at one of our Masses on Thanksgiving Eve or Day. (See schedule on page 3). God bless you! Page 4 by Austin Watkins Martha s House is the place we went to on the third day of our mission trip; it is where homeless children are able to stay. It is also where I met the sweetest young girl; I basically spent most of my time with her. My day started off by her asking me for a piggy back ride, where we walked around; the other children also wanted a turn; the other members of our group also participated: it eventually turned into a race game. I was tired and needed a break; little did I know that break would turn into something so special to me. So I sat down and just same sweet girl walks up to me with this book called Mable Murple. She asked me to read it; I gladly said yes to her; so she handed me the book and she sits down on the chair next to me. I began to read the book; I was about five or six pages into the book and we came to this particular page where the character in the book is naked and showing her butt; this little girl just falls in love with this page. I m a little shocked that it was printed in a children s book; I continue to read and finish the book. She took the book from me, flips to the page where it shows the character butt and shows me the page. She started laughing; she continued to show it to me over and over again; the more she did that, the more I laughed; I couldn t stop laughing. Little did I know it was not the picture in the book, it was my reaction I made every single time it was shown to me that she enjoyed. I must have sat there and read that same book to that little girl at least a dozen times. As I reflect back, her simple reaction brought so much joy and laughter to her, as it did to me. That by far was the best, most memorable and favorite day of the trip. Trust me; the other days were very physical, moving bricks, bags of rice and corn meal, pulling weeds and painting. The task of moving bricks sounds simple enough right? Wrong, we had to move what seemed like over a hundred bricks and lay them out for a house to be built. There is no such thing as a light weight bag of rice, they are heavy! We would load them into a push-cart and unload them in the storage room. Corn meal is much lighter than rice! Awww(!) painting, we will leave it at that. Let s not forget pulling weeds weeds on "Miracle Grow". Let s put it this way: I m 5 9 and who knew weeds could grow that tall. These weeds were so tall in some locations that we had to use machetes to cut them down in order to pull them out. That was also the hottest day; we did take breaks and we didn t want anyone to suffer from a heat stroke or pass out from exhaustion. Let s not forget stumbling upon two men harvesting peppers, and me asking them if they wanted some help; they accepted my offer. This entire trip was truly an amazing, eye- opening and humbling experience for me. It taught me to enjoy the life with which I ve been blessed and to help those in need. A simple gesture, a small act of kindness can bring joy and be most rewarding! This trip taught me be to very thankful with the simple things in life: WATER, hot water, running water out of a faucet that is clean and drinkable; to be blessed with a loving and caring family to call my own. Jamaica opened my eyes in many ways, but most of all the poverty: almost half the island lives in poverty. Try not to focus on your little world, look at the big picture; because chances are not too far away is someone living in poverty.

SIMBANG GABI Anniversary/Christmas Party Friday, December 5 6:00-9:00 p.m. December 14 - December 23, 2014 BACKGROUND: In the Philippines, these Novena Masses are celebrated early in the morning 4-5 AM or in the evening 6-7PM. Back home families wake up early, attend Mass and fill many churches. After the liturgy, delicious Filipino food and delicacies are served and shared by families.
