Dear Friends, We, as the parish and school community of Saint Paul the Apostle and ministry of the Paulist Fathers founded by Father Isaac Hecker with a vision to preach the Gospel in new forms, fresh new tone and spirit. The Paulist mission and Father Hecker s vision resonate today with Pope Francis, who calls the Church into new life: Let us go forth and open doors. Let us have the audacity to mark out new paths for proclaiming the Gospel. The Paulists innovate and develop new ways to seek out the lost, the alienated, the hurt, and the broken. We are known for meeting people where they are at. Father Eric Andrews, CSP will be here during the weekend of February 3 rd to invite you to help us in our mission by participating generously in the Annual Paulist Appeal 2019. Your help provides for the much-needed ministries of the Paulist Fathers, especially for the education and formation of new Paulist priests. The Appeal also supports our missions, university student outreach, media outreach at Busted Halo, our senior Paulist Fathers care and ministry, and much more. Also, don t forget to plan on attending our meeting on Community Goals for or parish. The Strategic Planning Committee would like to report to you Community Goals resulting from the surveys, focus groups, and surveys at two special 45 minute, Community Meetings Saturday, February 23 rd after the 5pm Mass in the Church or Sunday, February 24 th after the 9:30am Mass in the Parish Center (Childcare will be available during both sessions) Peace, Father Gil

A Word from Servant of God Isaac Hecker, Founder of the Paulist Fathers Several years of study and effort in the way of political reform made it evident that the evils of society were not so much political as social Hence a social reform was called for, and this led me into the examination of the social evils of the present state of society. The many miseries and the great wretchedness that exist in modern society sprung, in my opinion, from the want of the practical application of the moral principles of Christianity to the social relations between men. Why should not those who profess Christianity imitate Christ in devoting themselves entirely to the spreading of the truth, the relief of the poor, and the elevation of the lower classes? Such like thoughts occupied my mind, and since a social reform was needed, it was my duty to begin with myself, and this led me to treat those in my employ with greater kindness, and to make important changes in my way of living. If you have asked Father Hecker to pray for you or another person who is ill, and you believe something miraculous has happened, please phone Fr. Paul Robichaud, CSP, at 212-265-3209 x350 and tell him your story. Do you want to help the homeless? Join other St. Paul parishioners who have been Volunteering at St. Robert's Center in Venice (near Third and Rose) making and distributing sack lunches. We meet on every sixth Saturday. Or help by Donating new socks or large cans of ground coffee to warm tummies and toes, in the baskets at the church entrances. Call Claire at 310-474-5977. You are needed!

Strive to be a safe adult in a child s life One of the most common responses to stories from abuse victims who suffered in silence for years is, Why did you wait so long? For many children, they wait because they have no one they trust to talk to about what s happening to them. Many victims feel ashamed and guilty. Take steps to become a trusted adult to the children in your life. Tell them you will listen without judgment or punishment, even if they are scared to talk about something.
