FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora After the hustle and bustle of Christmas and after the many special feasts of the Church have been celebrated, we are now back to the Ordinary Season in our Church calendar. We are also back to tackling the unfinished business of last year, like the many projects we have for our church. And they are not ordinary works. They need careful planning and ample resources. 2014 is not just an ordinary year for our church. This is a very special year for Holy Name Church, as we celebrate the 50th anniversary of this wonderful and historical church building. We hold the record as the first Church in the Archdiocese to build an altar facing the congregation, as per the Vatican II guidelines. There s more history and beautiful memories in our church. Our Golden anniversary celebration will coincide with the pastoral visit of our Archbishop Cordileone on the weekend of April 5th and 6th. The highlight of our celebration will be a Solemn Mass presided by our Archbishop and concelebrated with other bishops and priests, with a special reception that will follow in Ryan Hall. We have formed a special committee to oversee the celebration and we surely will be calling on some of you to help us in the preparation and in the actual celebration. Please save the date, Sunday, April 6, 2014, the time of the mass will be at 10:30 AM and there will be no 9:30AM and 11:30AM masses on that special day to allow everybody to attend the Jubilee mass. To make it possible for everyone to attend church that Sunday, we are going to have a special No Excuse Sunday. Cots will be placed in the foyer for those who say Sunday is my only day to sleep in. There will be a special section with lounge chairs for those who feel that our pews are too hard. We will have steel helmets for those who say, The roof would cave in if I ever came to Church. Relatives and friends will be in attendance for those who can t go to church and cook dinner too. Doctors and nurses will be in attendance for those who plan to be sick that Sunday. The sanctuary will be decorated with both Christmas poinsettias and Easter lilies for those who have never seen the church without them. There s more to celebrate this year. Join us. Be one with us! The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back Question: Why do we go to Mass on Sunday to fulfill our weekly obligation and not on a different day of the week? Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: By a tradition handed down from the apostles which took its origin from the very day of Christ's resurrection, the Church celebrates the paschal mystery every eighth day; with good reason this, then, bears the name of the Lord's day or Sunday. For on this day Christ's faithful are bound to come together into one place so that; by hearing the word of God and taking part in the eucharist, they may call to mind the passion, the resurrection and the glorification of the Lord Jesus, and may thank God who "has begotten them again, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, unto a living hope" (1 Pet. 1:3). Hence the Lord's day is the original feast day, and it should be proposed to the piety of the faithful and taught to them so that it may become in fact a day of joy and of freedom from work. Other celebrations, unless they be truly of greatest importance, shall not have precedence over the Sunday which is the foundation and kernel of the whole liturgical year. Editor s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sacred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution s fifth chapter, The Liturgical Year. Remaining chapters in Sacrosanctum Concilium will look at "Sacred Music" and "Sacred Art." The HOLY NAME CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC is still accepting new students for the 2014 Spring Semester. Classes are already in session but there is still time to catch up. For registration information, please contact Jackie at (415) 664-8590. HOLY NAME TREE OF LIFE The Holy Name Tree of Life, a bronze tree trunk with approximately 400 leaves is located at the back of the Church. Donors can have their names, or those they wish to honor, engraved on the leaf. The proceeds of the donations to the Tree of Life will go towards a much-needed Capital Improvement Fund. Each leaf costs $500 with a $25.00 engraving charge. We suggest setting a MAXIMUM number of characters per leaf to 5 lines, 25 characters per line including spaces. Leaf color choices are Gold Silver or Bronze. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Please send engraving request with check payment (payable to Holy Name Parish) or drop by the church office, 1555 39th Ave. San Francisco, CA 94122. Second Sunday in Ordinary Time John 1: 29-34 The Lamb of God John the Baptist had come up from the Jordan River through the oasis city of Jericho. He marched up the mountain road that climbed to Bethany, the town where Jesus was visiting. Bethany perched on the southeastern side of the Mount of Olives. Jerusalem was less than two miles distant. The Bethany Road led around the side of the mountain to reveal a magnificent view of the great city, rising up from cliffs across the Kidron Valley. Bethany was the home of Jesus friends, Martha, Mary and Lazarus and one day it would witness the great miracle of the raising of Lazarus from the dead. Bethany was also the home of Simon the Leper where in time Jesus would be anointed with the sweet perfumes that foretold his death; and from which he would depart for a triumphant ride through cheering throngs into Jerusalem. But this day Jesus was not yet to be known. He was just a 30- year-old carpenter s son, down from Nazareth, to visit Martha, Mary and Lazarus. The afternoon heat drove several of the old men of the village to the shade of a house. Sitting on the ground and leaning back against the wall, they waited silently for the afternoon breeze. Instead they got a stranger. He was a wild-looking man hiking up the road. John the Baptist was glad to have finally arrived in Bethany for a chance to rest and drink before continuing. When he arrived John saw the old men sitting in the shade. Mind if I join you? he asked. No one moved or answered so John sat down next to them. He sighed and closed his eyes for a moment. When John opened his eyes again he squinted into the blaze of sunlight, and was startled to see Jesus walking toward him. John struggled to his feet and pointing toward Jesus exclaimed: Look! There is the Lamb of God! It is Jesus who takes away the sin of the world! The old men only saw the carpenter s son and began to clear their throats in embarrassment. Their questioning looks con-firmed that they thought John must be deranged. The baptizer tried to tell them that he had seen the Spirit descend like a dove from the sky, and that it had come to rest on Jesus. The old men s eyes twinkled as they patiently listened to John s incredible story. Jesus greeted John and stepped into the shade. The old men looked up at the two young men. It would be still be a long time before they would come to know the truth. A merciful breeze finally arrived and the heavy air began to move. [Continued on column on right] PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you, Mrs. Carolyn Brown (David Anthony 7B) and Mrs. Noreen Chan (Reyna Ramos-Santos 7B), for organizing the follow up vision screening that took place today. Below you will find a list of volunteers who worked January 7 &/or January 14 to screen all students in grades K, 1, 3, 5, 7A & 7B. Thank you, Mrs. Jean Thompson (Austin 7B & Garrett 6B) and Mrs. Bridget Michaels (Justin 8B & Shawn 4th gd) for orchestrating an outstanding Cheer Squad. These 8th grade girls delighted the school community on Friday and impressed students, parents and friends from both Holy Name School and St. Cecilia School on Saturday. Help raise funds for your school and dance the night away! Mark you calendar today! More information coming soon. The Lamb of God continued... Until we recognize Jesus in our lives, we are like the village men of Bethany. Sometimes we may need a modern-day John the Baptist to point out the presence of Jesus in our lives. We may be so busy and so preoccupied that we have failed to see him in our midst. The timeless words of the Gospel speak to us this day: When you see the Spirit descend and rest on someone, it is he who is to baptize with the Holy Spirit. If we look, we can see the working of the Holy Spirit in our midst as God uses each and every one of us to be the love he has for us.
