Gospel Those who lose their lives for Jesus sake will find them (Matthew 16:21-27). OFFICE HOURS Monday-Thursday 8:00 a.m. 4:00 p.m. Closed for lunch 12:00 1:00 p.m.; Friday 8:00 a.m.-12 Noon p.m. DOING GOD S WILL The language of Jeremiah as he addresses his yearnings to God he says, You duped me, O LORD, and I let myself be duped (Jeremiah 20:7) indicates a close and personal relationship with God. It is one the prophet obviously cherishes despite the derision and reproach it brings him. In the Gospel, Jesus indicates a similar bond with his Father. In spite of the difficult challenges presented by following God s will, Jesus is not deterred. Giving up our own worldly cares and dreams, even as we accept pain and suffering, is more than a fair exchange for doing the will of God. The only way to do God s will is offer our whole selves to God. As St. Paul writes in the Letter to the Romans: Do not conform yourselves to this age but be transformed by the renewal of your mind (Romans 12:2a). Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.

Page 4 What an amazing summer this has been: not my typical summer, let me assure you BUT one of the best ever! Actually, since Easter, I have been on a whirlwind of traveling and adventure! Some of it has been work and some of it pure fun and some of it a nice mixture of both: Here s a review of my travelogue: 1. On the weekend after Easter, I went to the San Francisco area to celebrate the 50th-year Reunion of my seminary class from Junior College (1964). 2. In late April through early May, I spent time in the United Kingdom: presiding at the wedding of friends of mine in Newcastle, visiting other friends in Barnsley, doing family ancestry research in Halifax and playing tourist in London. 3. In the first week of June, I went to our annual Priests Retreat back in the San Francisco area. 4. In late June, I went to Greenville, South Carolina to preside at a wedding. 5. In late July, I went on an Alaskan Cruise planned and organized to celebrate my 70th birthday! Had I known turning 70 would be so much fun, I would have done it much earlier! Lol! 6. Finally, in early mid-august, I went on our Jamaican Mission Trip. Now, here we are at the official end of summer: Labor Day Weekend! Enjoy the three-day weekend and let s all get back into the swing of our normal lives (whatever normal is supposed to mean!). For me, it means several things like: being Chaplain at Gorman, including attending (and, at times, traveling to) the football games, getting involved in RCIA, Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, Religious Education, Junior High EDGE, Senior High Upper Room, deacon activities, Diocesan meetings and events, liturgy planning, wedding preparations, funerals, etc. BUT MOST OF ALL: FUND-RAISING! Starting this week (right after Labor Day Monday), we must shift into high gear and get some major funds deposited into our Capital Campaign. I will remind you next week of the 7-Point Plan that I explained several weeks ago.and we will be off and running. REMEMBER: next Sunday, we switch permanently to our new Sunday schedule of the noon Mass changing to 12:30 p.m. Enjoy the end of summer and Labor Day. Then, let s go and build our church! NEW BEGINNINGS A Ministry of Hope, Healing and Consolation New Beginnings is a Bereavement Ministry designed to provide support to Christian individuals who have experienced traumatic loss in their lives. The grieving process can cause a sense of feeling disconnected, dismayed and can fill the individual with a sense of hopelessness and despair. New Beginnings offers several services that will gently accompany the bereaved and the parish community in their adjustment to the fact of death and to the sorrow this entails. HOPE Catholic Funeral Mass Planning and Coordination Contact: Patti Fitzpatrick 702-459-7778 HEALING Grief Facilitation - Blessed are they who mourn; they shall be consoled (Matthew 5:3) This support group offers trained individuals to help the bereaved understand the process of grief. In these classes, individuals examine their feelings during this intense period and look at coping mechanisms to move through the process feeling guided and not alone. The service has structured classes on various topics and also offers sessions for participants to examine their experiences and share with others in a safe environment led by a facilitator. September Grief Support Meetings are: September 2nd and September 30th at 6:00PM. Contact: Susie Cram 702-459-7778 (Leave your name with the office staff and Susie will contact you with information. TRAINING FOR NEW MINISTERS OF CARE Once again we will be providing the necessary training for any of our interested parishioners that would like to be a Minister of Care. Our need is great. We minister to the Catholic patients at Southern Hills Hospital, in nearby Care Centers, Assisted Living and Rehab Centers as well as our home bound parishioners. The ministry consists of us bringing the Eucharist as well as our presence in a visit. The training will be held at Christ the Kind for five consecutive Thursday evenings - September 11th, 18th, 25th and October 2nd and 9th. The classes are from 7 pm to 8:30 pm. The first class will be in Christ the King's Community Center. Here is an opportunity to put your faith into action. "When Lord, did we see you ill or in prison and not attend to yhour needs? I assure you, as often as you neglected to do it to one of these least ones, you neglected to do it to me." Matt 25:44. Please call our parishioner, Jeanette Lombardo, at 702-882-8750 to confirm your attendance and to answer any of your questions.
JAMAICA COLUMN by Father Bill Catechesis of the Good Shepherd Our atrium sessions begin on September 4, 2014. Thursday s 4:00 to 5:30 Each week in this space, there will be a reflection of one of our 23 Missionaries to Jamaica. My personal best memory is that of JEROME a 20-year-old young man, who was paralyzed from the waist down; he drove a four-wheel wagon pedaling with his hands on an upright pedal. In his wonderful imagination, this was a BMW! He went through all the motions of turning off the alarm, opening and closing the doors, unlocking the brakes, turning on the ignition, shifting, turn signaling, using the windshield wipers, etc. He drove all around the campus and real cars respected him and always gave him the right-of-way. We spent two afternoons in conversation although he could not physically talk, he did understand everything I said and would use the keyboard of my i-phone or i-pad to talk back to me. He would often be waiting for me to finish another job, so that we could spend time together. He is very spirit-filled and taught me about patience, creativity and adapting to whatever circumstances one might find oneself in. Thanks, Jerome, for being my friend and ministering to me! The parish office will be closed on MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 1ST in observance of the Labor Day holiday. It has taken many people to get this amazing program running. We would like to take a moment to say thank you to all that have given your time and your talents to the children. From carpenters to people who have cut out small comets. There are people behind the scenes also Father Bill, the parish staff, all those who are connected with the life of the church. What you do will add to the rhythm, substance, and prayer life of the child. We can teach each of these children words and prayers but what they really need to know comes from their heart. Thank you for helping us to give these children a place to gather and have quiet time and nourish their relationship with God through Liturgy and the Bible. Parents as the year progresses watch here for updates on schedules, seasonal activities etc. and if there is ever a question please email or call: Teresa Chisholm 702-292-2234 chisholm.tm@cox.net Page 5

The format of the Edge program is designed to meet the spiritual, physical, emotional, educational, and social needs of your middle school youth. The Edge Nights allow the youth to learn about their faith through talks, skits, videos, small group discussions and sharing what they know with their friends. As part of the Catholic Church s mission to evangelize, middle school youth are encouraged to go out and bring their friends to the Edge. At Holy Spirit, the Edge program is for those in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. Having three grades helps provide a positive transition for sixth graders, a year of development for seventh graders, and a year to be a role model for the eighth graders. Edge is open to all those in middle school even though who already participate in Catholic Education at School. Those who attend Catholic Schools are also encouraged to attend Edge. Edge sessions focus on the spiritual life of a middle school youth. They are based on Formation, not merely education. As a sponsor couple you help an engaged couple to prepare for Christian Marriage by inviting them into your home for a series of five or six weekly meetings. Your job is to "coach" them toward realistic expectations, not by lectures or claiming to have the perfect marriage, but by sharing experiences of the good and bad times in your own lives. You invite the couple into a process of reflection and discussion where both you and they grow to a better understanding of how to live and love as couples committed to marriage. If you've never been a sponsor couple before, get ready for what is going to be an enriching experience for your marriage! Sponsor couples benefit just as much from the process of sponsoring as the couples preparing for Christian Marriage!! For more information, please call the parish office (702-459-7778) and leave your contact information. You will be contacted by the coordinator of the program.
