ARCHDIOCESE OF DETROIT www.aod.org BOOK & GIFT SHOP Open weekends before & after Masses FROM THE PASTOR S DESK 19TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME by Fr. Terry Kerner Please note the Liturgy Schedule for this week s Feast of the Assumption this Wednesday. Because we always have a weekly Tuesday evening Mass, we will have a Vigil Mass at 6:40 PM that fulfills your obligation. With the three Masses the next day there should be ample opportunity to attend a Mass on the Feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. See you in church. Speaking of church we should try to be more careful and considerate on how we speak in church. Keeping our voices down and trying to observe a reverent silence respects fellow worshipers as they seek to spend time praying before the start of Mass. I encourage everyone who wants to carry on an extended conversation to use the gathering space the large and comfortable room next to church. Certainly a kind and soft-spoken and friendly greeting to others around you before Mass is appropriate. A long and loud conversation isn t. Please don t deny others the precious moments with the Lord before Mass. I want to encourage folks new to the parish to take the time to register in the parish. It is easy to do, just give a call, drop a note in the basket or come by the parish office during the week. For current parishioners, please note that if there are any changes in your residence, phone or other pertinent information to please let us know. We don t want anyone falling through the cracks. Have a good week and remember the story about the little girl telling her younger brother about the guys passing the basket : their job is to keep people quiet in church. That s why they are called Hushers! MASS SCHEDULE FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY August 14th August 15th 6:40 PM 9 AM, Noon, & 5 PM

Page 2 PARISH NEWS MISSION DONATIONS Please remember that your gift to the Missions can still be given this week. Remember to simply make your check out to St. Kateri but make the notation on your check that your donation is for the Mission. ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAM WITH DN. TOM Dn. Tom of St. Kateri Parish is presenting Bishop Robert Barron s DVD series The Mass followed by group discussion. The Mass series is held every other Monday beginning September 10th, ending December 3rd. These 90 minute sessions begin at 7 PM at St. Kateri in the St. Martha s Room. Entrance is from the well-lighted back parking lot, all on one level with no steps. Walk through the Liturgy with Bishop Robert Barron and be transformed through insights on this most privileged and intimate encounter with Christ. See how the Mass brings us out of the fallen world and into the heavenly realm. See how the Mass resonates with a call from God and his people, the church s response. Most importantly, see how we are intimately joined with the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus through the Holy Eucharist. The Mass will help you understand how to fully, consciously, and actively participate in the source and summit of the Christian life. While there is no fee for participating in these classes, the Associated Student Workbook, which cost $25, is highly recommended. Please register and send your check written out to St. Kateri Parish, 16101 Rotunda Drive, Dearborn MI 48120. Have questions? Contact the parish office 313-336-3227. Dn. Tom Leonard is a former teacher at U of D Jesuit High School as well as at Detroit Catholic Central High School. The Deacon holds M.A. Degrees in Sacred Theology and Philosophy. JPII GIFT AND BOOK SHOP NEWS The Gift and Book Shop is open before and after weekend Masses during the summer months. If you have visitors during the summer, please invite them to visit us. It has been a popular spot for out-of-towners lately. Let us know if you have special requests. We will do our best to find and fill your orders. Thanks for the ongoing support! The Gift and Book Shop will be open before and after the 9 AM, Noon, and 5 PM Masses on Wednesday, August 15th. FEAST OF THE ASSUMPTION Remember that Wednesday, August 15th is a Holy Day, celebrating the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Mass will take place on Tuesday at 6:40 PM and on Wednesday at 9 AM, Noon and 5 PM. AROUND TOWN MEALS ON WHEELS FOR DEARBORN Volunteers are needed for our program. FAITH FORMATION By Grace Lakatos Faith Formation and Sacramental Preparation Classes: What an exciting time of the year! We are less than a month away from the start of our new Faith Formation & Sacramental Preparation Program. I will be placing my order for needed materials this coming week. If you haven t filled out the registration forms yet, please do so. I would hate for any child to be without the needed educational materials because I didn t know that they would be coming to class. Forms are available online and in the parish office. NEEDED: If you have a love of God and a willingness to share that love, I could use your help. I am looking for 2 people to work with our 4 yearold to Kindergarten program and at least 2 more people to assist with our Faith Formation program. The smiles and lightbulb moments, as well as great snack, are all part of the position bonus. Please contact me if you are interested. RCIA (Rite of Catholic Initiation of Adults) Why do we worship God but honor Mary? How did the Catholic Church begin? What are the reasons behind the Sacraments? If you ve got the questions, we ll help you with the answers. If you are interested in becoming a Catholic, or just want to see what it is all about or if you have been baptized but never had the chance to receive Eucharist or Confirmation, the RCIA program could be the missing piece. In conjunction with our neighboring parishes of Sacred Heart, St. Sebastian, and St. Albert the Great, a once a week program can help you to discern if you wish to join the Catholic Church. Our Wednesday evening classes begin September 19th and run through May, 2019, and consist of prayer, sharing, community and reflection for the development of a faith and spiritual formation. Throughout the process, there is no set length of time for you to make your decision to become a Catholic nor is there any pressure. This decision is left up to the individual and must come from the depths of one s own heart and soul. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the program, please contact me at your earliest convenience. Fill the Bus! Anticipation is growing. Children are cringing at the sight as parents go over and over again that long list of supplies! I was blessed and I hope many of you were too. I had a loving mother that was able to provide school supplies for me and my siblings. But what if that wasn t the case? Many of the families served by Nativity of Our Lord parish fall well below the poverty line and school supplies are unfortunately not easily obtained. Last Year, St. Kateri families donated 826 items and $200 to Nativity of Our Lord Parish for their parish and community. What will this year s totals be? Every pencil, notebook, backpack and eraser counts and makes a difference. NEEDED; Sorters, counters, packers and delivery personnel are needed on Monday, August 20th for delivery. Call if you are available to assist with any area of this parish outreach program. SCHOOL BELLS St. Sebastian Open Enrollment: We offer schooling for Little Learners (3 years old), Preschool (4 year olds) through 8th grade in addition to before & after school child care, CYO sports and a wide range of enrichment programs.
