NOTICES Food for Friends Please bring your diaries as the rosters are now available. Food for Friends commences Saturday 1 December and concludes on Sunday 9 December. Our share of the Food for Friends roster is not yet complete. Please see the noticeboard inside the church and indicate where you can help. In particular, we require volunteers for Tuesday 4th December and Friday 7th December, both at Hawksburn. Annual Meeting of parishioners A very positive annual meeting took place last Sunday. The vicar addressed the meeting on some changes and challenges that lie ahead, the reports were received, and the financial statements presented. The meeting expressed, in a formal motion of thanks, the appreciation of the parish for churchwardens Keith Beecher and Gillian Horwood, who are not continuing on the new Vestry, and acknowledged with acclaim the 25 years of service to the parish by Keith Beecher, many of these years as Honorary Treasurer. The agenda and reports can be downloaded on the parish web site: http:// saintjohnstoorak.org/#/whatson Christmas Rosters Expressions of interest from those able to assist on the rosters over the Christmas period may be directed to the parish office now. We are requiring welcomers / stewards, readers, and chalice assistants for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day (8am and 10am), and welcomers / stewards and readers (8) for the Service of Lessons and Carols on Sunday December 16th. Prayers for Christian Unity 10am Thursday 29 November, St Peter s Church.

Statement from Anglican Archbishop of Melbourne, Dr Philip Freier, regarding the Royal Commission into child sexual abuse On behalf of the Anglican Church in Melbourne I welcome the Federal Government s decision to set up a Royal Commission into institutional responses to child sexual abuse. I welcome any step which will assist those who have experienced the devastating effects of abuse through the churches or other institutions. I earlier expressed our hope that the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry will provide the community with confidence that churches and religious organisations will handle allegations of abuse with the utmost seriousness and concern, and with the best possible practices, policies and protocols for handling allegations of abuse, and for providing appropriate care for the victims of abuse. I uphold the same hope for the Royal Commission, and on behalf of Anglicans in Melbourne wish to assure the whole community that the Anglican Church is committed to doing all that is possible to ensure that abuse does not occur. Although we already have rigorous processes in place, we are keen to learn how these might be improved further. Click here to read the statement PDF from the Primate, Dr Philip Aspinall, regarding the Royal Commission. The Diocese of Melbourne s submission to the Victorian Parliamentary Inquiry can be seen at: www.melbourne.anglican.com.au/parliamentary-inquiry
