WELCOME TO HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH, SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA Page 5 FAZtoral Council by Fr. Arnold Zamora It is with great joy that I announce to you the formation of our new Parish Pastoral Council (PPC). The Parish Pastoral Council is a consultative body that makes recommendations to the pastor. Upon departure of a pastor, the council ceases to exist until the new pastor officially reconstitutes the previous council or establishes a new one. The aim of the council is to make the life and activity of the parish ever more closely conform to the gospel. It assists the parish s apostolic work, and coordinates various independent lay associations and initiatives. The members offer wise counsel so that the pastor plans the pastoral program systematically and carries it out effectively. Our Parish Pastoral Council is modeled from the three-fold function of Christ as a Priest, Prophet and King and hence broken into six different commissions or areas such as Worship, which oversees the liturgical and prayer life of the parish; Education or Evangelization, sets direction and implements programs for various parish educational efforts, including all sacramental preparation, and Adult Education; Social Services or Outreach, oversee the work of the parish community service groups; Temporal Affairs, oversees financial matters for the entire parish and is responsible for updating the five-year maintenance plan for all parish facilities; Youth, which oversees the youth and young adult activities of the parish; and the Socio-Cultural committee, which coordinates parish social events, including Parish dinners and fundraising. In addition we have three others representatives who oversees the parish in general and we simply named them Committee At-Large. Here are our new PPC members: Worship: Benny Capuyan/Roberta Beach Education: Patrick Cody/Diane Cresci Social Services: Tuan Nguyen/Mike Downing Temporalities: Paul Roscelli/ Ron Alcaraz Youth: Rose Tang/Tri Nguyen Socio-Cultural: Carol Murphy/Linda Sideco At Large: Mike Sharpe/Vince DeLucca/ Fred Grafelman We ve decided to have interim officers with a formal election after six months. They are: Patrick Cody, Chair, Benny Capuyan, Vice-Chair, and Carol Murphy, Secretary. More power to all of you! The PPC is our Christmas gift to the parish, bring yourself to the Church as a gift. May you have a wonderful Christmas! Oh, Holy Night May the true meaning of Christmas bless your heart and your home. From the Priests, Deacon, Sisters and Staff of HOLY NAME OF JESUS PARISH PARISH OFFICE HOLIDAY SCHEDULE The Parish office will be closed on Thursday, December 24 and Friday, December 25 and will only be open half day on Thursday, December 31 and closed on Friday, January 1, 2010. HOLY NAME LADIES AID Members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes are at the exits. Your generosity is always appreciated!. MISA DE GALLO The Misa de Gallo is an annual Christmas tradition among Filipino Catholics. It is a nine-day series of early morning masses held just immediately before Christmas Eve, with the liturgy traditionally celebrated at four in the morning. The tradition of Misa de Gallo began as singular Masses, celebrated during early mornings in the Philippines, for workers setting off for the fields. Hence the name, which is Spanish for Mass of the cock. As the years passed, these Masses also became Masses of thanksgiving (Misas de aguinaldo), especially around the Christmas season. Subsequently, the format-- nine days of Masses merged with the Catholic practice of novenas, or special prayers said for a period of nine days to ask a favor or to intercede on someone s behalf. The Misa de Gallo was brought to Holy Name Parish in 2003 by members and supporters of the Holy Name Fil-Am Club. Please join us in celebrating the anticipation of His birth, from December 16-24 at 5:30 AM (Flanagan Center), through this novena of Masses and the sumptuous breakfasts provided by our generous sponsors.

From the Desk of the Parish Nurse: Important Facts about pneumonia: PNEUMONIA is an infection deep within the lung. It may be due to a virus or bacteria and is usually treated with an antibiotic. Severe cases require treatment in the hospital. Milder cases can be treated at home. Symptoms usually start to improve during the first two days of treatment. HOME CARE: 1. Rest at home for the first 2-3 days until you feel stronger. When resuming activity, don t let yourself become overly tired. 2. Avoid exposure to cigarette smoke (yours or others). 3. You may use acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) to control pain, unless another medicine was prescribed. (NOTE: If you have chronic liver or kidney disease or ever had a stomach ulcer or GI bleeding, talk with your doctor before using these medicines.) (Aspirin should never be used in anyone under 18 years of age who is ill with a fever. It may cause severe liver damage.) 4. Your appetite may be poor so a light diet is fine. Keep well hydrated by drinking 6-8 glasses of fluids per day (water, soft drinks, juices, tea, soup, etc.). This will help loosen secretions in the lung, making it easier for you to cough up the phlegm (sputum). If you also have heart or kidney disease, check with your doctor before you drink extra amounts of fluids. 5. Finish all antibiotic medicine prescribed, even if you are feeling better after a few days. FOLLOW UP with your doctor in the next 2-3 days (or as advised) to be sure you are responding properly to the medicine. [NOTE: If you are age 65 or older, or if you have chronic lung disease (asthma, emphysema or COPD), we recommend a PNEUMOCOCCAL VACCINATION every five years and a yearly INFLUENZA VACCINATION (flushot) every autumn. Ask your doctor about this.] [NOTE: If you had an X-ray or EKG (Cardiogram), it will be reviewed by a specialist. You will be notified of any new findings that may affect your care.] RETURN PROMPTLY or contact your doctor is any of the following occur: Not getting better within the first 48 hours of treatment More trouble breathing Coughing up blood or increasing chest pain with breathing Fever over 101.5 F (38.0 C) for more than two days Increasing weakness, dizziness or fainting Increasing thirst or dry mouth Sinus pain. Headache or a stiff neck Chest pain not caused by coughing Carol, R.N.
