Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time July 15, 2012 Truth shall spring out of the earth, and justice shall look down from heaven. Psalm 85:12 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Amos said, The LORD took me from following the flock, and said to me, Go, prophesy to my people (Amos 7:12-15). Psalm Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing (Ephesians 1:3-14 [3-10]). Gospel Jesus summoned the Twelve and began to send them out two by two (Mark 6:7-13). READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 1:10-17; Mt 10:34 11:1 Tuesday: Is 7:1-9; Mt 11:20-24 Wednesday: Is 10:5-7, 13b-16; Mt 11:25-27 Thursday: Is 26:7-9, 12, 16-19; Mt 11:28-30 Friday: Is 38:1-6, 21-22, 7-8; Mt 12:1-8 Saturday: Mi 2:1-5; Mt 12:14-21 Sunday: Jer 23:1-6; Ps 23; Eph 2:13-18; Mk 6:30-34 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: Our Lady of Mount Carmel Wednesday: St. Camillus de Lellis Friday: St. Apollinaris; Ramadan (Islamic month of fasting) begins this week Saturday: St. Lawrence of Brindisi; Blessed Virgin Mary TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Does the scene of the disciples being sent out two by two bring to mind any other scripture? After the flood, Noah opens the door of the ark and sends his passengers out to renew the face of the earth. Certainly, Jesus has the same purpose. The purpose is fulfilled in your communion in the Body of Christ today, and in your being sent from the Eucharist into the world. The sending is so important that our word Mass derives from it. In Latin, the last words of worship are Ite, missa est, which means Go, you are sent. From that, people began to call Catholic worship the missa, or in English, the Mass. Our English words dismissal, missal, emissary, and mission are all related. We are not sent into the workaday world alone, but in relationship to one another. Some people have acquired the unhappy habit of leaving worship as soon as they receive Communion and therefore miss the prayer, the dismissal, and the solemn blessing that are essential parts of the Mass. The dismissal is a seal on our Communion and reveals its purpose. Thanks be to God! James Field, Copyright J. S. Paluch Co. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora There is an on-going video presentation on Catholicism at the Flanagan Center every Thursday, as mentioned in my notes last week. There is much to know about our faith. There is a constant learning and reaffirming of what we believe about our Catholic religion. I spent 12 years in the seminary and I have been a priest for 26 years already, but there are still many things that I need to know. The master s degree courses I have taken in Theology do not mean I have mastered all of God s attributes. There are questions I cannot answer and I need to find the answers. Many of you have been coming to Church for years now and some might not even know many church terminologies or even how to spell them. The word Sexton was new to me. It s not even in my Catholic Glossary of Church Terms. I did not grow up with this word, which is synonymous with a sacristan who takes care in preparing all the materials and sacred utensils for the mass. My friend Wikipedia told me that the words "sexton" and "sacristan" both derive from the Medieval Latin word sacristanus meaning "custodian of sacred objects." So, his office is the Sacristy. This word is not new to your ears, but be careful with its spelling. I saw it spelled SaChristy. And Altar is spelled Alter. They sound the same. Every now and then I hear someone calling the Pastoral Center as the Pastorial Center. I hope you are extra careful with the word sin. Stay away from it. A Bulletin ad reads "The choir invites any member of the congregation who enjoys sinning to join the choir." Now how about the word Deanery. One time I saw it spelled as Dinery. A Deanery is a cluster of parishes within the neighboring area. There are many deaneries in the Archdiocese. There are five in San Francisco County alone. Holy Name is part of Deanery One which also includes St, Stephen, St. Anne, St. Finn Barr, St. Gabriel, St. Cecilia, St, John of God, St. Thomas More, and St. Brendan. Our deanery just had a meeting last Tuesday at Alma Via of San Francisco hosted by Sister Joan O Donnell and Tracy Castle. Sr. Joan is the daughter of our own Vera O Donnell, longtime volunteer on Mondays with the Counting Ladies, and a graduate of Holy Name School. We thank them for their hospitality. Alma Via is a part of the Elder Care Alliance family of assisted living senior communities. True to its name, (Alma Via which could mean Way to the Soul, ) they cater not only the physical needs but also provide the spiritual care of their residents. Our guest speaker at that Deanery meeting in the house of the old people was Bernice Aguas, from the Archdiocesan Young Adult Council, who spoke about the Pastoral Plan for Young Adult Ministry in the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Church consists of the young and the old and regardless of age, we keep learning our Catholic faith. HOLY NAME LADIES AID COLLECTION Today, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid Society will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes are by the exits. PARISH BUILDING AND MAINTENANCE FUND Next Sunday s Second Collection will be for the Parish Building & Maintenance Fund. Your generosity is greatly appreciated. TO MEMBERS OF THE FIL-AM CLUB This is a reminder that the Fil-Am Club will have its regular meeting on Friday, July 20, 2012 in Flanagan Center. We will be begin with the 7th Day Novena to San Lorenzo Ruiz at 6:45 pm, followed by a meeting immediately after the prayers. Hope to see you then! - Lito Coloma, President FILM SHOWING OF THE DVD SERIES CATHOLICISM Thursday evenings from 7-8pm until August 23rd in the Flanagan Center Here are the topics for the remaining DVDs: July 19th 5. The sacraments of initiation are received at the Easter Vigil. In 2013, the Easter Vigil will take place on Saturday, March 30. TOAN Dear Holy Name Parishioners, These past few days I have been receiving from many of you heartwarming messages of friendly welcoming and assurances of prayers in my new assignment here at this faith community. Let me thank you for your warm welcome and hospitality. God is good! Thank you for your expressions of friendship. Thank you for allowing me to enter into your faith lives. Thank you for welcoming me into your lives where we can share happy moments of fellowship. Thank you for your expressions of support and encouragement as I have begun my ministry work at Holy Name Parish. I thank GOD for all the graces that God has brought us, all together in our journey of faith, at this moment and this community. May I take this opportunity to extend my deepest gratitude and appreciation to Father Arnold Zamora, Bishop Ignatius Wang, and the entire parish staff for your kind welcome. I m looking forward to working and praying with all of you with the zeal and honesty that make our parish a very welcoming place for all. Please keep up the good work and be more devoted to your prayers. Let us all stay happy and healthy for the greater glory of God! ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT Just a reminder: On Wednesdays, we have the Blessed Sacrament exposed after the 9:00 AM Mass until 7:15 PM. Won t you come and spend an hour with the Lord? LIFETOUCH DIRECTORY PHOTOS For those of you who were not able to get your photos taken last June, there is one more opportunity to have your photos taken. You can schedule your own appointment online: https://www.securedata-trans14.com/ap/ holynameofjesuschurch/index.php?page=10 Or you may also call Jackie at the Parish office (415) 664-8590 to schedule your appointment for either Friday, July 27 or Saturday July 28. TIPS & IDEAS FOR PHOTOGRAPHY DAY: Make sure your professional photos turn out great! Here are some tips and ideas to prepare for and get the most out of your upcoming professional Lifetouch photography session. Allow for about an hour to: Check in Be photographed View your electronic portrait images and select your directory pose Purchase products Remember that you can purchase portrait products at your session. Portraits make wonderful gifts and treasured family keepsakes. If you choose to purchase additional portraits, we accept cash, checks, and major credit cards. Grooming Make sure nails are trimmed and clean. Simple hairstyles and natural makeup are best. Avoid haircuts within 48 hours of your portrait sitting. Ideally, haircuts should happen 2 weeks prior. Have any hair and makeup supplies available for quick touch-ups. Clothing Solid colors or simple patterns look best. Busy patterns on clothing are distracting. Medium to dark shades create a timeless look & are slenderizing. Small jewelry/accessories compliment your face better. Avoid large, distracting accessories. Make sure your shoes match your outfit. They might show in some poses. Long sleeves are better for adults to focus attention on the face. Short sleeves are ok for infants and children. If you wear glasses, feel free to wear them. Our photographers are trained to minimize any glare. You may invite grandparents or other family members/loved ones to join your portrait sitting (even if they are not members). You may bring your household pet to your portrait session, you may bring meaningful items such as sports equipment, musical instruments, special toys or books, etc. We encourage you to have fun at your session and express your true personality!

ANCIENT TRUTHS FOR MODERN TIMES Our lives are short, said Rob, and we see things from the perspective of the few years we re here on earth. The Church has been guided by the Holy Spirit for two thousand years, and it teaches what millions of people have learned from Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I would be foolish if I didn t pay attention to what the Church offers. Rob was treasurer and chief financial officer of A National Football League team for eighteen years. He was around the glamour of professional sports long enough to realize that fame and fortune do not guarantee happiness or peace of mind. Professional football may provide excitement and diversion, but it doesn t answer the most basic questions in life: Why are we here? Where are we going? How should we live? For the answers to these questions, for the wisdom and direction we all need to find meaning, Rob looks to the Church. Rob and others like him now have a great resource to help them, the Catechism of the Catholic Church. Rob and I discussed the Catechism shortly after its publication in English on June 22m 1994. His remarks about the importance of Church teaching shed light on one of the primary values of the Catechism. It takes the wisdom distilled from twenty centuries of humanity s quest for God and places it in our hands. A One Volume Library The Catechism of the Catholic Church gathers Church teaching from many sources into one convenients, readable volume. In a certain sense, it is the Catechism of the Second Vatican Council. It arranges the teachings of the Council in logical order for study and reflection. It integrates them with the great sources of belief, such as the Bible, the liturgy, instructions of previous Church councils and popes, and the works of prominent teachers like Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, and Teresa of Avila. Before the Catechism was available, students of Catholicism might have had to look through Second Vatican Council documents for answers to one question and through The Code of Canon Law for answers to another. They might have had to consult Catholic Encyclopedia for information about devotion to Mary, and search libraries and Catholic bookstores to discover what the Church teaches about issues that have arisen since Vatican II, like in vitro fertilization. Most Catholics have had neither the resources nor the theological background necessary for such tasks. Now they can find what the Church teaches about most issues simply by turning to the Catechism of the Catholic Church. by Oscar Lukefahr, C.M.
