FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora We recently lost two long time and dedicated parishioners: Vera O Donnell and Teresa Hurley. Both were remarkable parishioners at Holy Name, devoted to God, to their families and their children. They consecrated not only themselves but their entire family to God. In fact, Mrs. O Donnell is the loving mother of Sister Joan O Donnell, a religious of the Sisters of Mercy (RSM). Mrs. Hurley, on the other hand, is the sister-in-law of Sister Mary Edith Hurley, another Sister of Mercy. They are now rejoicing with the saints in heaven, face to face with their Creator and loving God. In 2013, Pope Francis declared that a Year of Consecrated Life be celebrated throughout the world. The celebration is from the First Sunday of Advent in 2014 to February 2, 2016, the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord. We thank and honor the religious sisters who have worked at Holy Name, especially the Sisters of Mercy. Now, we are still blessed with the presence of religious sisters from the Canossian Daughters of Charity (FdCC). Some of these sisters are retired, but they still continue to work with us. Sr. Toni Lynn Gallagher, RSM, one of our school alumni, still helps us with Grief Ministry and occasionally helps in sacramental preparations. Sr. Stella Negri, FdCC, who was our pastoral associate and just retired two years ago, still helps us with Bible Classes, serves at Mass as Eucharistic Minister and fills in with other responsibilities when needed. Reminds me of a story of an older nun who was living in a convent next to a construction site and noticed the coarse language of the workers and decided to spend some time trying to correct their ways. She decided she would take her lunch, sit with the workers, and talk with them She put a sandwich in a brown bag and walked over to the spot where the men were eating. Sporting a big smile, she walked up to the group and asked: And do you men know Jesus Christ? They shook their heads and looked at each other, very confused. One of the workers looked up into the steelworks and yelled out, Anybody up there know Jesus Christ? One of the workers yelled down, Yeah, why? His wife s here with his lunch. Nuns are married to Christ. Priests are married to Christ too. In fact, all of us are married to Christ by our baptism. Holy Name will be busy with three baptisms this weekend. Welcome to our Christian life. These three babies are now married to Christ too. TODAY S SECOND COLLECTION PARISH MUSIC MINISTRY COLLECTION Our Parish Music Ministry is dedicated to fulfilling our mission to lead the congregation in joyful worship through music. Your generosity is very much appreciated in this second collection. HOLY NAME LADIES AID COLLECTION Next Sunday, members of the Holy Name Ladies Aid will be collecting for the needy in the Parish. Boxes will be by the exits. BEGINNING AGAIN If I were to begin life again, I would want it as it was. I would only open my eyes a little more. Jules Renard ON LOVE If you would be loved, love and be lovable. Benjamin Franklin STATIONS OF THE CROSS & SOUP SUPPERS 6 Fridays in Lent Feb 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20 & 27 Please join us for the Stations of the Cross at 6:00 PM in the Church followed by Simple Soup Supper in Flanagan Center at 6:30 PM. HOLY NAME PARISH MISSION What is Parish Mission? A Parish Mission is an opportunity for a parish to experience in a heightened and intensive way, spiritual services, talks and prayers on major themes. The Mission also provides a positive experience of God leading to personal and on-going conversion in a community setting. It is an opportunity for renewal and reconciliation. A prayer/song opens the mission followed by Scripture reading, talks and ending with a sending forth. Join us in our Lenten journey with our Parish Mission. All are invited. MONDAY WEDNESDAY, March 2-4, 2015 from 7:00 8:30 PM Speaker: Fr. David Pettingil THEME: Breathing a New Life: Evangelized and Evangelizing Community Rev. David M. Pettingill, a retired priest of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, teaches Homiletics and the introduction to the New Testament in the permanent deacon formation program. He has given retreats to priests, permanent deacons, religious women, and laity. Among his many previous ministries: - He served as a faculty member and principal at Marin Catholic High School, he was professor of Homiletics, Liturgical Celebration, and Scripture at St. Patrick s Seminary and University where he also served as the Dean of Students. - He was Pastor of St. Gabriel Parish - He was Founding Director of the School of Pastoral Leadership - Founder of the Pastoral Life Office at the Archdiocese of San Francisco - He was the Director of the Permanent Diaconate Program as well as Secretary to the Priests Personnel Board - Fr. Pettingill co-authored with Father Gerald Coleman, S.S. FOL- LOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF JESUS (Paulist Press) and has written numerous Scripture columns for the San Francisco Catholic. HEALING MINISTRY During Jesus ministry he cured many who were sick with various diseases, and he drove out many demons. This is the case in today s Gospel. Jesus fulfills the vision of Psalm 147: He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds. Jesus knew, however, that he couldn t possibly heal all the illness in the world. No matter how many people he cured or how many hours he ministered, there always would be more suffering people like Job who craved his healing touch. His primary mission was not to rid the world of all suffering. His purpose was to preach the coming of the reign of God that heals, yes, but ultimately transcends and transforms earthly suffering. With Paul, Jesus could have said, Woe to me if I do not preach that good news. Copyright J. S. Paluch Co.
