Second Sunday of Advent December 9, 2018 God has commanded that every lofty mountain be made low. Baruch 5:7 TODAY S READINGS First Reading Take off your robe of mourning and misery; put on the splendor of glory from God (Baruch 5:1-9). Psalm The Lord has done great things for us; we are filled with joy (Psalm 126). Second Reading I am confident that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus (Philippians 1:4-6, 8-11). Gospel The winding roads shall be made straight, and the rough ways made smooth (Luke 3:1-6). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved. READINGS FOR THE WEEK Monday: Is 35:1-10; Ps 85:9-14; Lk 5:17-26 Tuesday: Is 40:1-11; Ps 96:1-3, 10ac, 11-13; Mt 18:12-14 Wednesday: Zec 2:14-17 or Rv 11:19a; 12:1-6a, 10ab; Jdt 13:18bcde, 19; Lk 1:26-38 or Lk 1:39-47, or any readings from the Common of the Blessed Virgin Mary, nos. 707-712 Thursday: Is 41:13-20; Ps 145:1, 9-13ab; Mt 11:11-15 Friday: Is 48:17-19; Ps 1:1-4, 6; Mt 11:16-19 Saturday: Sir 48:1-4, 9-11; Ps 80: 2ac, 3b, 15-16, 18-19; Mt 17:9a, 10-13 Sunday: Zep 3:14-18a; Is 12:2-6; Phil 4:4-7; Lk 3:10-18 SAINTS AND SPECIAL OBSERVANCES Sunday: Second Sunday of Advent Monday: International Human Rights Day Tuesday: St. Damasus I Wednesday: Our Lady of Guadalupe Thursday: St. Lucy Friday: St. John of the Cross LECTIO DIVINA Read: Baruch prophesizes the return of God s people to a day of glory and honor, thanks to the hand of God. God who initiates the good work in every soul will bring it to completion, unless of course, we block his path by our unwillingness to collaborate with God. Reflect: Every human being will see the salvation of God, we are told. But will every human being choose the same? What good is receiving a gift if the recipient refuses to use it? The old adage of you can take the horse to the water, but you cannot make it drink is worth recalling. It is one thing for God to offer us his salvation, but the onus is on us to prepare ourselves to receive the same and profit from it. John invitation to people is not to miss the amazing advent of God s salvation, but to prepare themselves assiduously to receive the same with maximal effect. Pray: Ask God for the gift of true repentance. From: Fr. Paulson Veliyannoor, CMF Bible Diary 2018 Claretian Communications Foundation, Inc. Quezon City, Philippines www.claretianpublications.ph Reprinted with permission RICHES Riches are the instrument of all vices, because they render us capable of putting even our worst desires into execution. FAZtor s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora I can feel the spirit of Christmas! The days are getting colder and shorter. I can hear the sound of Christmas as Christmas songs are playing everywhere. And I can smell the aroma of Christmas parties here and there. My first Christmas party celebration was last Wednesday, with our Ladies Aide Society led by Letty Palpallatoc. These ladies meet regularly to pray for all of us and have been helping our needier parishioners and HN School students. Most of the members have been involved in the other ministries of the Church as well. In other words, they have been living the Stewardship Way of Life by sharing their 3Ts: their Time to pray, their Talent to be involved in ministries, and their Treasure to help the needy and the church as well. May your tribe increase! This weekend is our Homebound Mass, on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception and of course, the Christmas party for our Homebound parishioners that follows. Some of these (homebound) parishioners enjoyed the special deliveries that our parish prepared last weekend as part of our Parish Thanksgiving meal. They were so delighted to receive the meal and a visit from our parishioners. Another Christmas party is happening this weekend for our Music Ministry right after the 5PM mass, organized by our Music Ministry Coordinator, Carl Vengco, who is also conducting a Cantor s training session the same day. Our Sunday afternoon will be filled with music as our BVM Shrine Ministry sponsors their annual Choir Competition in our church. We welcome all the participating choirs, especially those who are coming from across the bay. On this Second Sunday of Advent we have our Rite of Welcome for our RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) candidates. We have two catechumens and four youth Confirmation candidates who will be presented at the 5PM mass this Saturday. Welcome on your Catholic journey! We have posted a new Schedule of Masses and Confessions in the acrylic frames outside the church. We have the same schedule of masses, but modified our Confession schedule to give the priests few minutes more of their time before the mass begins. Somebody suggested some possible signs outside the church: Gambling is a sin. Bet you can t give it up. There are some questions that can t be answered by Google. Let us help you study for your final exam. Speak well of your enemies. After all, you created them. Let us help you study for your final exam. Speak well of your enemies. After all, you created them. Merry Christmas to our Christian friends. Happy Hanukkah to our Jewish friends. Happy Ramadan to our Muslin friends. To our atheist friends, good luck! Make faith your weapon. If God permits the challenge, He will provide the solution to meet it. God has enough support to give in every situation we may face. So, cast your worries away because God is with us all the way. Keep the faith! page 3 FAITH FORMATION CATECHESIS PASTORAL OUTREACH Director: Sr. Cristina Ovejera, FdCC crisfdcc2016@yahoo.com (415)664-8590 REFLECTION: Sparks of Advent Light Advent calls us to be alert in this season when God comes to us through a gentle, defenseless child -that all of us are ultimately defenseless. All of us need the gentling of the other The things we need to lead a good life are waiting all around us. Name ten graces that are surrounding you at this moment in time. Recognizing them may be the greatest grace of them all. -Sr. Joan Chittister, OSB Advent Giving Trees Thank you one and all for getting a gift tag from our parish s Advent Giving Trees. Your gifts will be gratefully received by the clients of Janet Pomeroy Center, by the poor and homeless served by St. Vincent De Paul Society, by the children coming to our Religious Education Program. Please bring back your gift with the tag attached, place it under the Advent tree on weekends or submit in the Pastoral Center during the week in care of Sr. Cristina. We have set the deadline to have all the gifts back on December 13 th. May God bless you and your family this Advent season and always. Volunteers to wash altar linens First of all we thank Maria Lee for coordinating this important ministry for many years; we appreciate her invaluable service. Thanks to Ding Carbonel for accepting our request to be the new coordinator. This may be a simple service, but it entails time spent and attention given so that altar linens and towels will be available for all Mass celebrations, both in the church and in the chapel. We need more volunteers for this ministry. Please contact Sr. Cristina OR Ding Carbonel for more information. Grief and Consolation Ministry in the Archdiocese Opportunities for Help with Holiday Grief : Help is available throughout the Archdiocese. You may visit Grief and Consolation web page, sfarchdiocese.org/grief. All are welcome to the following gatherings: Wednesday, December 12, 10:00-11:00AM at Alma Via, 1 Thomas More Way (on Brotherhood Way), with Sr. Jeanette Lombardi, OSU, as facilitator. Or on Wednesday, December 19, at St. Gabriel Parish, with Sr. Bernadette Hart, RSM, as facilitator. For more information, please contact Sr. Toni Lynn Gallagher, RSM, at 415-681-6153, her email is tlgallagher@mercy.wmw.org. Religious Education Program Advent Confession and First Reconciliation The students will celebrate this sacrament on Sunday, December 16 th, at 10:45AM in the chapel of the Pastoral Center. It will mark the First Reconciliation of children preparing for their First Holy Communion during the Easter season. We encourage the parents to be present dring this important time in their children s sacramental life. New Officers of Holy Name Senior Club Fr. Arnold has appointed the following to the leadership of our parish s active, creative and fun loving Senior Club: Pat Relampagos President; Cecilia Bermudez and Caridad Wright Vice Presidents; Cely Orque Treasurer. They will be officially installed during the Club s Christmas party on Thursday, December 20 th. We extend our heartfelt thanks to Lina Hidalgo and Marge Finney, past VP and treasurer, respectively, for their generous service through the years. We know that you will continue to be active members of the Club. Congratulations and Thanks!

RETIREMENT FUND FOR THE RELIGIOUS Aging religious need your help. Senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests ministered for years for little to no pay. Their sacrifices now leave their religious communities without adequate retirement savings. We, in turn, should be thinking about what we're giving to others. Some joke that that's what December 24th is for. Unfortunately, some don t plan ahead in regard to their gift-giving. As a result, when they re ready to go shopping, they don t have enough money put aside to buy the gifts they want to give. Because of poor planning, they may give inappropriate gifts. God didn't give his leftovers, nor did he have a haphazard plan. His gift to us was in the Person of his Son, Jesus. He was in on the plan from the beginning, and with joy he came to earth to be our Savior. God wasn't caught short of funds; he gave his Son who gave his life for you. What gift could be more appropriate? Christ is exactly what each of us needs! Grow As Stewards PRAYER.... Lord, open my eyes and heart so that I can truly appreciate the gift of your Son Jesus. Thank you for including me in your plans. In your name I pray. Amen. DISCERN.... Consider the simple gift of YOU who needs your attention? Be it a family member, a friend, a neighbor, or that person tugging on your heartstrings, present the gift of YOU. ACT.... We don t have to put on special glasses or search far and wide to find the meaning of Christmas. Just answer the call of our baptism to live as a steward and pray, serve, and share.
